My wife and I have been coming here off-and-on for 13 years. Needless to say, it's up and down. We dined this past Friday, February 13th at this location. The service took forever. We sat for 25 minutes before our order was taken. We waited another 45 minutes for our food to arrive. The server (older gentleman with parted salt and pepper hair, chubby guy) simply slammed our plates on the table and left. The food was cold and had obviously died in the window (this allows for foodborne illnesses to populate). He didnt come back for quite some time. We were so hungry that we ate the cold and subpar food. Long after our plates sat on the table, he stopped by. I was polite and told him the food was cold. He then got mad and started blaming us. He told me that I should have made him aware, and he responded by telling me I didnt let him know. My response was "you didn't come back".....and wow did he get mad. He slammed the table and told me to talk to the cashier. Come to find out, the cashier is the female owner. She was very rude and refused to make things right while displaying zero integrity whatsoever, but offered us a discount on our next visit (isn't going to happen, they couldn't run my credit card fast enough and shove us out the door). The server was at the host stand and started talking smack about us (thinking we dont know Spanish). Once my wife stepped back in to the restaurant and looked at him, he shut up quickly. If you read reviews you will notice a trend. When things are great, they are great. When they drop the ball, they become combative and refuse to take ownership and accountability for their failures as an establishment. What a terrible way to represent the El Nopal brand. We will never be back. Save your money for a restaurant that displays passion on a consistent basis. If you want Mexican food, go to a different restaurant that upholds traditional Mexican values instead of completely disrespecting their own culture and values with their poor representation. I'm not sure what has happened here. The service has disappeared for all intents and purposes. Stories of waiting 45 minutes after ordering and giving up, paying for beverages and leaving. Lots of possibilities not the least of which is ICE scaring off employees. This store has been a reliable, friendly and welcoming location. I hope it gets back to that state. read more

Not sure what all of the negative reviews are about. We have eaten here many times as we've passed through Seymour and have always enjoyed the food, the drinks and especially the people. We stopped last night for dinner. After being seated and provided with chips and a couple of salsas we were greeted by our server, Luis. Luis took our drink order, a Palermo and a Margarita and left us to study the extensive menu. Drinks were promptly provided and Luis to our our order. My wife ordered the Monica's Plate, a delicious dish of rice served with tender strips of chicken and large grilled shrimp in a queso sauce. I ordered Shrimp a la Mexicana, a delightful mix of grilled shrimp with grilled jalapeños, onions and tomatoes. All grilled to perfection and served with rice, salad, guacamole and pico de gallo. Both meals were well more than either of us could finish, but we were traveling through sadly left the remains. (We both did finish all of the shrimp). Oh my goodness what a great find in Seymour. First of all I have to travel to Seymour for work occasionally and usually don't even stay in town. I stay closer to Indy. However this week I was leaving at lunch time and hungry. Happy cow app directed me to this place as I am vegan and it said they had decent vegan options. Wow just wow, I was blown away. They had 2 vegan entrees and very reasonably priced. Chips and salsa were also served. Now this vegan burrito was gargantuan I can usually eat my meal but I had to take half of it with me. I was there for a late lunch, around 2 pm so not many people there so can't speak to peak periods. But I imagine this is a popular place just based on how good my food was. I will be back. This is a chain restaurant with sit down options. The staffs are very courteous. Menu got lots of choices. We ordered chilaquiles, and rice and beans with a side of quesadilla and a chicken salad. I would not recommend the rice and beans (very dry rice) but the salad was worth it! I ate most of the salad with no dress and still was very good! The plus side is the kids menu! This is just like every other El Nopal. You already know what you are going to get then you visit an El Nopal location. I ordered my usual, the combination 20 and so did my friend. The hot salsa has great flavor and was hot enough to please those of us who like it hot, others in our group mixed the hot and mild salsas together to suit their taste. The servers were very friendly & accommodating. Our group came to eat on Father's Day and although they were busy the staff took very good care of us. I ordered a simple beans & rice w/grilled shrimp, the shrimp was not very well cooked as some wasn't fully cooked and some were a little overdone, however I was hungry so I surpassed! The group enjoyed their meals straight from the menu (which I would recommend so there aren't any mistakes as the staffs understanding of English isn't 100%). Whenever I am visiting Seymour and in the mood for Mexican, we make it a point to go to El Nopal. The service is always really fast and friendly, and the food is delicious. The atmosphere is very casual and it is a great family restaurant. There is a bar for the adults and serve huge margaritas if that's what you are in the mood for. When you sit down you are immediately served chips and two kinds of salsa- one mild and one a little spicier. Both are really good especially with their warm chips. Be warned, it is very easy to accidentally fill up on the chips and salsa. If you still have enough room in your tummy, the steak fajitas are always a favorite for my husband and my go-to entree is "Monica's platter." Its grilled chicken and shrimp with rice and white queso. I always get the queso on the side. The portions are very generous. I will definitely be returning the next time I am in town. read more

Just traveling thru found El Nopal on Yelp! Great place Fresh chips 2 smooth salsas and a great a avocado verde flavorful and slow heat. Shrimp A la Mexicana was awesome the grilled veggies were to die for the Steak Mexicano so flavorful especially once again those veggies! Tamale very good gobbled right up . Great rice and beans . I had the taco salad yesterday. I use the name salad loosley because it was more a soup. When they brought it out there was a small amount of lettuce, guacamole, a slice of tomatoe on top. I ordered the beef and I think there was some in there. The problem was either the refried beans or the questionable beef was awash in water. I really needed a tablespoon to eat this sloppy mess with. Once stirred it looked like a gray mound of unappitizing whatever. I had to stop. I have never been so disappointed in a taco salad. My dinning partner had the chicken taco salad and his wasn't as sloppy or as ugly as mine but it was still less salad and more something else.. Sloppy, messy, unappealing. Wow! When I ordered the waiter asked if I wanted chicken or beef, I said beef. My entree was brought out with beans. I hate beans. I sat there with my plate on side of table and he ignored me. Finally he came over and asked if we wanted more margeritas. We said no and I explained to him I wanted beef. He said "you want me to bring you out some ground beef" I told him forget it. When we paid I explained this to owner, he asked me if I told the waiter my order was wrong. He rang up my full bill. No apologies. El Nopal is pretty good. I agree with the other reviewers that it is CLEAN, like whoa. It's a typical, family owned Mexican restaurant. They have the same things on their menu as any other Mexican place. I got the veggie quesadilla and the thing weighed about 25 pounds, plate excluded. Definitely good for sharing! read more

The first thing you'll notice is that El Nopal is very clean. Much cleaner than many 'traditional' Mexican restaurants. As for the food. El Nopal has some unique menu items. I've tried a couple and I've been pleased. But, my favorite thing so far is the Chicken Fajitas. They were excellent! My only wish is that they had a better salsa. They bring you two salsas. Over priced, horrible service, won't be back. First Mexican place I've eaten at where beans and rice weren't served with every meal. Rice was like cardboard, beans were okay, ground beef was flavorless. Honestly wish I went to the buffet place up the road. The salsa and chips tasted like they were from a tin can and a bag. Our waiter could care less about spills, if food was correct, etc. I will say other waiters seemed more attentive. But I've never seen Mexican food so over priced for the taste. Even the Tex Mex place up the road had better pricing (although just as terrible food). Still hunting for a good Mexican place in town. read more
