Looking for something new to try, I found El Negro De Oro. Based on the menu and the reviews on yelp, I decided to give it a try. My co worker and I arrived at the restaurant, although it's street parking, there were plenty. When you walk in the restaurant, there were ample seatings, decor was decent, although all the excessive 'stuff' on the right hand side made it less attractive. We decided to sit down for our lunch. The menu was in Spanish with English translations and a picture, so you know exactly what you are getting. We decided to go with chicken soup and a beer and shrimp entree to share. Based on the picture, they both look delicious. The waitress was kind enough to bring us two bowls and two plates as we separate the food to share. The chicken soup was delicious, the flavor was spot on. It comes with a bowl of white rice for you to throw in or eat it on the side to make it a hearty meal. The beef and shrimp dishes came with beans, white, salad, fried plantains, 5 shrimp and 2 big pieces of beef. The shrimp was cook well, beans were good, the beef however was a little chewy, which was my only negative about the food. While we were eating, we saw other tables receiving smaller portion of soup and entrees, which we assumed was the lunch special, if that's the case, that's a great value since their lunch special is only $7. Overall, I like our first experience and will likely come back to try their lunch special.

I had slight trepidation about this restaurant when my friend told us her choice for birthday dinner; despite the 5-star rating, there were only 9 reviews on Yelp. Regardless of this fact, 10 of us showed up for dinner on Saturday night at El Negro de Oro and every single one of us were blown away! The food was amazing, the staff was super friendly, and the entire experience was awesome! I've actually never eaten Ecuadorian food before, not for lack of trying, but because I've yet to come across a place! But I've found my new spot for certain! Most of the menu was what I expected of Ecuadorian food, and most of their platos tipicos were drool-worthy! My friend indicated the food was pretty authentic Ecuadorian, too! Always a bonus. We ordered 2 appetizers to share for the table - the Tostones Rellenos con Camarones al ajillo (4 to an order - fried plantain stuffed with shrimp in garlic lemon sauce) and the Tostones Rellenos con Hornado (4 to an order, but we ordered one extra - fried plantain stuffed with roast pork). Both were really great, but the tostones rellenos con hornado was so good - I probably could have eaten that for dinner by itself. For dinner, my husband ordered the Pechuga de pollo a la plancha con camarones - chicken breast grilled with shrimp, served with rice, salad, and sweet plantain. Obviously I had some of his, and it was delicious - the chicken was cooked perfectly, SO flavorful, rich, and mouthwatering. The rice/beans were phenomenal as well! The sweet plantains were dessert-like and yummy! I ordered the Camarones al ajillo - jumbo shrimp in a fresh garlic sauce and lemon served with rice, green plantain, and salad. Even the rice tasted far superior to any rice I've had before (#butter ?). The shrimps were perfectly sweet and garlicky - delish! I could have been a bit more adventurous, looking back at the menu - but I'm glad I ordered it because it was amazeballs. Like I mentioned, we were celebrating a birthday so at request, they brought out Flan to the birthday girl - they even wrote her name on it!! We all sang Feliz Cumpleanos and passed the flan around the table to share. Not the biggest flan fan, but this one was really good! Had a strong vanilla flavor and it had a more dense consistency that I'm used to. At this time we were the last ones at the restaurant, but the staff made no effort to escort us out or rush us. The place itself feels more like a lunch joint, or a take-out, however there are plenty of tables and it's BYOB - zero reason NOT to eat here! Absolutely check it out, the food is really delicious!

El Negro De Oro (Black Gold) is a new Ecuadorian restaurant at the corner of Sewall and S. Broad in Hamilton, New Jersey. It is easy to find because it is painted the colors of its name and stands out in an otherwise drab urbanscape. Street parking is required, but the side streets around there offer plenty of space for a short stroll to the entrada. Walking in, the color combination grabs your attention immediately. Black and gold floors and walls. The house has been open only three months and the atmosphere is clean and bright with a small counter near the kitchen entrance, and an area for entertainment off to the side. They did a very good job turning a small grocery/deli into an attractive place to dine. Service was warm and informative and we had no trouble understanding each other though all accents (including mine) were thick as homemade salsa. The menu is bilingual which is very helpful. I ordered the Special Lunch of the Day, Catfish/Yam Soup and Quarter Roast Chicken with Red Beans and Rice. A couple of dishes of salsa tagged along, one a traditional Green Sauce, and the other a more unusual thick Yellow Grainy Sauce, which had an unusual flavor that mixed well with the chicken and rice. Think Adobo. The Soup contained a tender chunk of Catfish, bone in and with skin. It was very tasty. The orange color of the soup base came from the Yams in which everything simmered for many hours. There was some spice thrown in for good measure. The sweetness of the tubers was the most obvious flavor, and cooking the fish in it was an excellent approach, as the mild white meat of the Catfish had nicely picked up the Yamminess from the stewing process. The Chicken was smaller than the typical clucker found in most restaurants, and had the look of a Cornish Hen, although the taste was not gamey. I was able to pull it apart with knife, fork and fingers and suck the meat off the bones. Liked it a lot. The White Rice absorbed the juices from the bird and Red Beans and was a good companion to the rest of the plate. While eating, the owner/chef came out to check on my satisfaction. I learned that his nickname was "Black Gold," and that he was also a trained Italian chef. As if to prove this point, he came out with a piece of Tiramisu prepared in his kitchen. While this is not my normal tea and crumpets, it was soft, rummy, creamy and sweet. I suggest he consider adding a few of his best Italian dishes on the menu to broaden the appeal of his shop. There are not many Ecuadorian/Italian places around here (or anywhere). El Negro De Oro is another of the first rate Latin kitchens sprouting up in Trenton and Hamilton. It is a variation of what we know as Mexi/Guat/Salvador/Puerto Rican/Dominican/Cuban restos, and well worth a visit. The cuisine and the hospitality are the real deal.

This restaurant was genuinely a very pleasant surprise. I was in the area and stopped by here for lunch. They have GREAT lunch menus with AMAZING, friendly prices. I would definitely come here for lunch again if I was in the area. Their lunch menu comes with a soup. I had their Chicken soup, and it was perfect. Then I had the Pork chop dish, which comes with rice & beans and salad. It all went together so well. The waitress was very friendly and suggested dishes. This is definitely a hidden gem that's worth the visit in Hamilton, NJ.

El Negro de Oro has the best Ecuadorian food I've had in the area (so far)! Most places tend to focus on coastal food, so I love that I can get my llapingacho fix here! The tostones con hornado (or camarones) are fantastic! I'll be coming back here soon!

The food was delicious however the lentil soup was very salty. But other than that it's a good spot to grab and go.

Opened just 7 days and they've got it together! The food was so good we felt homesick for CR again. We ordered the Cena Tipica Hondureña (traditional meal). The steak was obviously marinated because the flavors of that, plus the chargrilling effect, was delicious! Especially loved those creamy refried beans they're famous for in Central America. Also ordered 2 pupusas (a favorite). We're taking home an order of churros and a piece of Tres Leches. I confess the biggest surprise was how fast the service was. As they're so new, I really expected very slow service but we did not wait more than 5 minutes! I must say that the ambiance is very much for take-out but we decided to eat in and it did not take away from the flavor. HIGHLY recommend this place if you want very authentic Central American cuisine.

For my first time visiting this new restaurant I went with the Chicken Taco Platter which is served with customer's choice of Rice and Beans. I opted for Refried Beans with White Rice which both went very well with my fully loaded Chicken Street Tacos. And with a slight addition of some of their Authentic Hot Sauces I was definitely in my happy place. At least until I finished my meal and then it was right back to reality, and the daily grind.   But that's totally cool because I can always come back and try something else off this amazingly delicious looking menu and return to my food coma happy place once more.
