This is the type of Mexican food you can expect in a place like New Iberia. The food was plain and not spectacular as one would expect with the Mexican cuisine. It's in a strip mall but breaks my strip mall theory of the fact which the best ethnic foods are found within strip malls. I will probably be back again as too much Southern and Cajun food can overwhelm me and will need to try another type of food. The service was great and enjoyed speaking with the waitress . I have to agree with Corey D. I went into El Mexicano at least once a week for a year, so I knew who to look for, but language is a big problem. The food is great, and fairly cheap. My biggest irk it that I was in there, like all the time, and yet there was no recognition what so ever! It was like every time was the first time. And some lunches too at least 45 minutes to get our food. We learned to start calling our order in, to go, and eating it there. That being said, try the Super Burrito! It's great! read more

We have been living in Texas for over a year and have moved back to New Iberia today. We decided to try out El Mexicano, since we used to eat there all the time. After eating the food, that wasn't even tasty, my husband found black HAIR in our salsa (which we both have blonde hair). Stopped here for dinner and got the vegetarian special which came with a Chile relleno, cheese enchilada, tostada, rice and beans. The portions were generous. I personally didn't care for the taste of the beans or the flavor of the cheese, which unfortunately was what most of the dish was comprised of. Had a party of 14. Called ahead to reserve a table. Accommodated us well. The service was not so great. Had to continuously ask for drink refills. Arrived a little after 7:00, but did not leave until after 9. When food arrived, it was barely warm. I think it was because they waited until the entire table's food was ready. Would have preferred that they brought it out as it was done, that way everyone's food was hot. Very disappointed because most of the time, service and food are great. read more

I've been going to El Mexicano for some time now and I judge all other Mexican restaurants by it. The dishes are top-notch -- I've never had a complaint about any of the items I've tried. Of special interest to me are the tamales, which are presented unlike any tamales I've had previously, and yet are excellent. Very courteous staff and owners, who are themselves from Mexico. read more
