To my surprise, El Maguey is pleasantly good! The service was good. The food was just as great. The chips & salsa..hubs and I agreed, the chips here were pretty darn good. Other Mexican restaurants, offer the thin chips & salsa. The chips here...are a breed of it's own. Chipotle needs to carry these chips. They're thick, thiiickkkkkk. We went through 2 baskets of chips & salsa. I had the 2 enchiladas & taco (sub with pastor taco). Did have to send my plate back, to fix. Told them no cheese, they sent it out loaded with cheese. The pastor taco, had lettuce on it. Never had a pastor taco w/ lettuce. But it was alright. Hubs had the chicken, beef and shrimp burrito, and absolutely annihilated it! This is my mom's favorite Mexican restaurant to go to, and we go so often it's now an inside joke with the family. And honestly, I see why she likes it so much. Easily the best Mexican food I've eaten out by and far; my favorites are the Nachos Locos and the Tamale Deluxe. The restaurant itself has a nice, comfy interior with nice decor. The waiters and cooks are super friendly and we've mostly had wonderful service with them. Only one time was there a waiter who didn't quite give us our whole order but every other time was great. This evening, my Grandfather treated my Aunt and I to one of his favorite Mexican Food restaurants in town, and I couldn't believe how good it was! o___o I used to live in Lake Havasu City, AZ, and There, you have access to incredible, authentic Mexican food of many varieties. I am impressed with El Maguey and their rich and flavorful Caldo de Camaron soup! ^__^ I look forward to trying more of their menu's goodies in the future. And MAN their in-house chips and salsa is bomb! I sorta over ate on those too and still feel it hehe.. We opted carry-out so he could be present for tonight's football game! Great Food but HORRIBLE SERVICE Picked up food and nobody was at counter when I came in. A long line had formed. The person who came didn't know how to run the register. We have visited this location several times and always have had a good meal. The fajitas are good, and today, I had the #5- Beef and Cheese Enchiladas with refried beans and rice. No complaints and everything was hot and tasty. The dining room is big with a couple of smaller sections for dining. Our server took good care of our table and the food came out hot and fresh. I was shocked when I saw the average rating of this place was a 2.5 out of 5. I think this is one of the best Mexican places in the area. This is a fairly priced places where the quality of food lines up. They definitely have some of the fastest service, that's for sure! I also, don't think I have ever had a bad meal from here! I really wanted to like this place, especially because I'm moving to this area and I would like a good Mexican restaurant. They brought out a huge basket of chips and a little carafe of salsa. The first bowl for pouring salsa into it was dirty, however the second bowl was fine, and the wait staff noticed the dirty bowl and brought us a clean one. The chips taste like stale pieces of cardboard. I don't know why I went there thinking "I would sure like some good chips and salsa" but that's one of the terms of a good Mexican restaurant is trying out their fresh salsa. I ordered the quesadilla mexicana. The beef tip was fantastic, but the plate of lettuce tomatoes guac and sour cream was flat and tasteless. In the Covid world, there are not many places to go in and have a sit down meal. This place falls very short of my expectations. usually i love el maguey but first of all it took us 30 minutes to get greeted then after we finally get our food there's a string in it! they then try to convince us it's a bay leaf vein and so we pull it to show it's a string and the manager just walks away. read more

This is the first time eating at this location and might be the last. The food was "meh", definitely a few notches down from the oak grove location. What was surprising to me was the depressed staff. While the food certainly looked and smelled good, when I asked for gluten free options, the server said there were none. I found this odd since their post on Groupon says there are gluten free options and several recent reviews on Google rave about the ease of eating here if you need to be gluten free. Bathroom alone made this a 2 star but the service was terrible the food doesn't even taste like real beef there. I ordered their beef enchiladas and there was chicken in with the beef. The "red sauce" is prego from the store. I got there white quseo dip and I feel like they got it at the price chopper down the road. Everything was overly salted and over fried. Recommended by a family member as the best Mexican around KC. Food was ok. Service was worst. Young man waiting on us brought us chips and salsa pretty quick. Then 12-15 min later asked for our drink order. Good thing the salsa is mild if we weren't getting drinks quick. I ordered a beer and my spouse ordered a margarita. Several minutes later he shows up again with my beer and a water for my spouse. We said no it was a margarita. Before he could leave to fix that we told him we wanted to order - thinking we might have a long wait again. My spouse ordered double beans and no rice with his combo meal. Long wait again for margarita but it finally came and it was the smallest margarita I've ever seen at a restaurant. Or anywhere for that matter. Food arrives and my meal has zero rice while my spouse has double rice. Not double beans. Oh well. Let's just eat and move on. Food was decent. Not great. No chip refills. We didn't even finish our drinks we were so ready to leave. Across the room another couple with the same server was having the same issues. We chatted across the room a few times about it. Nervous laughing. Waited for our check that never came so decided to go ahead and head for the front and ask someone about our check so we could leave. Of course the server then sees us and thinks we are running so quickly gets the check together and hands it to us. I went up to pay the cashier and was asked how our food was. I let him know the food was ok but our service was horrible. He said they had a big table. I said it was not only the wait. We're huge Mexican food fans and we visited El Maguey Saturday evening (10/4/14) while visiting family in Grain Valley. I ordered #4 in the combo section. The "tostada" had flavorless ground beef and liquid cheese...You couldn't pick it up...no lettuce, tomato or other garnishments...same with the taco that came with the meal. The pork on my wife's dish, while flavorful, was overcooked and hard. The wait staff seems to look right through you. Someone at the table wanted black pepper and it was hard to relate that to our waiter...finally when I said, "You know, like SALT AND PEPPER? Pepper," he got it. My wife asked for a to go box and the waiter wouldn't even acknowledge that he heard her. Won't be spending money there again. Maybe it was just an off night...but I won't take the chance again. I understand that I am partially to blame for choosing a Mexican restaurant during a road trip through the Midwest. Luckily- others can learn from my mistakes. You're in Missouri so the spice level being non existent is to be expected, that's not my problem here- the problem is ground up tasteless mystery meat or soggy under-fried rellanos. I was able to finish my dinner, the chorizo chicken bacon tacos which were over salted yet serviceable - my traveling companion got the worse end of the stick and sat there miserably contemplating the mush in front of her. The servers at El ma-gooey are actually pretty good, being attentive and somewhat gay. Margaritas were also decent- surprisingly enough, and if you only need a drink and are the kind of psychopath who'd sit in a family restaurant, order a single drink, and then leave I think El Maguey would suit you well. read more

"El Magooy"...make sure to have a handful of Nexium ready; the vegetarian menu is mushy, tasteless, and covered in shredded lettuce...the refried beans were slushy and watery, this is without a doubt the worst "almost mexican" food I have had...and as you know there are many awful mexican eating spots in our area, perhaps too many!
