While service was great I'm hard pressed to give 3 stars. Ordered the carne asada dinner. Chips and salsa really good rice was tender and full of flavor, beans maybe a tablespoon full but carne asada was sake steak Waffle House serves. Full of fat thin as a tortilla and tough. Since new owners have taken over it has new prices but no new menu!! Now called El Ray!! Don't get a second basket of chips unless you want to pay for them. Beware of this if you order cheese dip or guacamole. These do. Or come with any extra chips. Food wasn't bad but this can be an issue. read more

We hadn't been here for a little while, but a group of 6 of us stopped in to grab an early dinner. We got a table right away and our server was there to get our drink orders. They came out in pretty short order and we got in our food orders. Drinks were fine, but we got pretty simple stuff...a few beers and some sodas. Chips were fine, but the salsa only had a hint of tomato flavor and not much else. We had 2 containers and both were almost tasteless, so if you like super mild salsa, this would be right up your alley. Same for the queso - it came out cold and had very little flavor. Our food came out quickly and was nice and hot. I got a combination tostada and soft taco. The stewed chicken was good, as were the rice and beans. The tostada had a blend of white and yellow cheese, and a small tomato slice. The chicken taco was OK, again with the chicken being the star; and the rest of the condiments were run of the mill. Others in our group got quesadillas,burritos, and enchiladas. Overall the sentiment was similar that the taste was OK, but on the very, very bland side. It's certainly possible they are catering to a regular crowd that likes it this way, but it was a disappointment from what we'd had here in the past, which was much more flavorful. Pricing is more than reasonable, and our service was OK, but we were there a bit before the normal evening crowd, so the servers were socializing a bit before it got busy which made it tougher to get their attention. read more

The food is TRASH. My tacos were soggy and the tortillas weren't cooked. It took 60 min for our food to come, and it wasn't even busy. we only got one order of chips the whole time, not to mention the queso is the worst i've ever had. In Denison IA there is a very large Hispanic community. So there are a lot of Mexican restaurants. This is a good one. I think it is as good as the big city Mexican restaurants in Omaha. Prices are excellent. The only thing they should work on is checking back to see if another drink or some condiment is needed. The servers are very friendly. read more

Honestly hurts me to leave this poor of a review on El Jimadors. Every time I have been here in the past the food and service was great, I'm afraid that COVID has severely hurt this restaurant. A group of three of us walked in for a late lunch and didn't have masks with us and there were none provided at the door. We informed the staff that we didn't have any and the mood completely changed. Our waitress continued to roll her eyes at us, our food came out all wrong, drinks were mediocre and it took quite a bit of effort to get her attention. The JImador is your normal, middle of the road Tex Mex restaurant right off of main street Denison Iowa. The quality is variable food wise. but the cost of the Tequila is unbelievable! i pay 15 bucks a shot for Patron Anejo in most LA restaurants. Here i pay 6.99! The employees here are variable from good to great. The best food items tend to be those that are made to order like the Fajitas which are the Star of the Jimador menu. The meats are of high quality and the preparation is careful and savory. Interesting note: most of the workers here are from El Salvador which means the Tex Mex food served here is really El Sal/Tex-Mex. When i first started traveling to Denison i spent a lot of time at El Jimador. I developed a relationship with the employees and things were cool. Over time as the Jimador became more popular several things changed: the food devolved into mediocrity and the drinks became weaker. The people also started to take their customers for granted. Not a good situation for El Jimador nor their customers. With a small town like Denison businesses like the Jimador should buckle down and make things better: improve their food, improve their service, re-evaluate their pricing. El Jimador decided to do none of those things and went for making as much money as possible.. Yes they used a lot of money remodeling and refurbishing but that money should have been used to procure better quality products and keeing pricing as is. El Jimador is land bound and appeals to a customer base that is not likely to increase soon. El JImador: WAKE UP! read more

My coworker and I are not from here, looking for a hot fast meal. So, First off if my buddy didn't know Spanish I don't think I would have been served in a timely matter. Secondly the server only answered him the only time they even talked to me was my order which is there job. First thing the server said when we walked in is we are closing in thirty mins the food takes five mins to come out hot and very tasty but the service itself s needs work you are there to make money so don't be rude to your customers. I usually always tip atleast 20% but because of that I didn't tip over 5% I'm not gonna support poor service but the restaurant has great food and because of that I gave them three stars and the food did come out rather quickly unfortunately we left three mins after closing and would have been before closing but the servers we to worried about leaving then making any money. Ps I had plan on leaving over a 30% tip but as soon as we walked in and the server was rude about letting us know it was close to closing and there service from that point on cost them more money thank god my buddy has a nicer heart then me!!! read more

Chili Colorado is Spicy hot but very delicious the tacos the county asadah are wonderful and the margaritis are so icy cold and delicious

Had to find and acquire my own silverware. Food was okayish, but not great. Waitress basically ignored us.

Just went for my neices Birthday. The service was absolutely horrendous. We had to threaten to leave before they found our waitress to give us our check. My niece couldn't even eat her dinner because it was undercooked and when we tried to tell the waitress she said it was supposed to be that way. Never again... read more

Always super friendly, usually very busy in the evenings and weekends. Pretty safe, standard Mexican fare. Mojarra frita is usually a nice walk away from the same old, though occasionally overcooked. Is it the most authentic in Denison? No. But certainly one of the better Mexican-American establishments. read more

One of my favorite places to go! Their drinks are amazing and staff is really friendly. Prices are reasonable and portions are big. Their chips and salsa is reason enough to go. I've tried a few different things, my favorites being the taco salad and the soft shell tacos. My fiancé loves their chicken tacos and says it's the best he's had. When he takes a bite of those soft shell chicken tacos, even I can see the juiciness of the meat. We're proud regulars. read more

This has been one of my favorite places to eat. Slowly, it has gone downhill. The more successful it is, the worse the service gets. We got seated today at 4:50. We were given our menus and a bowl of chips and salsa. 15 minutes later, a server walked the restaurant (we were the only couple in there), and nothing. 10 minutes later, we got up and walked out. Never got drinks, or gave our order. But they did say thank you as we walked out. And no one questioned us for not paying our bill. read more

Great atmosphere. I had the Buurito California and I had confidence that I would be able finish it, but I failed myself. It was delicious and I would definitely go back again. The rest of my party was very pleased with their food as well. Margaritas were good and so was the beer. The only issue I had was that we forgot our leftovers there darn it!!! read more

The staff is friendly, and the food is excellent. Tuesday is free iced tea and the tea is very good.
