I can't give this place zero stars, or I would... I took my boyfriend to Galveston for his birthday... we were excited to find a Mexican place open early in the morning. I'm pretty sure we probably busted a KKK meeting when we walked in at 5am. We both have service industry backgrounds, we are respectful and tip well. It was like pulling teeth getting anyone to take our order. We almost left.... There was sticky syrup on the walls by their trashy decorations, his food came out charred, but mine came out better-looking. I'm white and he's black... We decided to leave and he didn't eat much of his food. It was possibly the most racist experience I had with him. Blue lives matter flag splashed with food on the wall didn't help. Gross. Awful. Go somewhere else, especially if you have more melanin than the rest. read more

Must be a back in the day thing but now it is the worst place for a breakfast burrito in Galveston. I ordered an egg, cheese and bacon with extra bacon burrito. What did I get? A burrito with egg, cheese, bacon, bacon beans and 50 percent potato in it. I cannot eat potatoes. Why would you serve me potatoes if I specifically said no potato! Now at work I have to remove the potato only find the freaking bulk of the burrito is potatoes with some beans that looked like they were removed at the last second. So what did I get for breakfast? About a table spoon of egg and bacon. Take a chance with these idiots but they can't get a simple order filled. It would help if my order was actually written down so the cook could get it RIGHT! Spore me the puns on this yelp dot com post of El Jardin de consumición (Garden of Eatin').* (puzzle solvers: there are 51 gardening terms in this review, not including food names) Plucked this one in tourist season, because the other places were packed. Location is near the biker bars in the pink building, not the green house. Inside, it has concrete ground cover and no live plants. Restaurant is split into 2 beds: bar area and dining. Orchard of 9 tables are lined up in 3 rows in the dining area. Walls have some ornamentals relating to law enforcement. There is a hedge-podge of eclectic chairs and table covers forming an Eek Oh system. Four tables of locals who seem to know the staff (stalk?). Plastic-covered table cloths hang down. One strong-wilt kid told another for fun jus' hide ripe under the table. Menu is easy to weed but only has a small crop of basic Mexican genus (enchiladas, tacos, fajitas). Daily special was Menudo in a pot ( I find that a-pollen). Breakfast items take over a third of the menu, and they sew it till 2pm. I harvested the nachos with beef fajita instead of ground beef. For my hydroponics: Root beer, but a Bud Light would have been better. Chips y salsa: Chips were excellent, not too thin or thick and not greasy. Salsa was watered down but hotter than at most places. The nachos were bland, so I irrigated them with salsa before digging in. Melted cheese was a bit scarce, and therefore did not have many cheese runners connecting the chips, some of which got soggy from the cheese top's oil, but most allowed me to shovel them in without dropping nutrients. The nachos come with slices of pickled jalapenos, chunky (fresh) guacamole, and sour cream, but no foliage (lettuce). I did not detect cilantro in the guacamole. They must have put that herb aside. The beef was pruned of fat, and hardy (probably grilled too long). Later, I did not get sick at this place, so there was no significant germ in 8 of my nachos. Service: In a bog (slow), frequently dormant and leaf you alone, until they seed you signal for something. For some locals, this is a perennial spot. But, I didn't like it very mulch, and I don't expect this place to grow on me or blossom into a popular spot. I picked this restaurant because when I googled "best breakfast tacos in Galveston," there it was. Walking in, it is a very mom and pop kind of place. Small and we were the only customer. Doesn't scare me as I love entrepreneurs and those gleaming hole in the walls! For whatever reason, in Galveston, I was craving a delicious breakfast taco with awesome hot sauce. At home, I knew where to go but here, this was a new craving for Galveston. It's a seafood town, right? So, there were no "breakfast tacos" on the menu...only "breakfast burritos"....$6.50 each I believe. Wasn't sure if I needed one or two so inquired on size. One was enough. So the review on flavor: they brought out chips and hot sauce. The hot sauce was red and hot...I like hot so I was happy with that...it wasn't overly authentic or delicious but it was good. The chips seemed homemade but were on the borderline of being burnt...just to the smoky taste. So, the tacos. Me and my guy ordered almost the same thing...mine with bacon, egg, cheese and potato. His with all plus carne guisada. He loved that part as it was very tender. However, it made his burrito quickly fall apart even though the tortilla was very thick although truly homemade. I think this comes down to personal preference. If you are in the Clear Lake area, I would highly recommend Mamacita's for the best Mexican breakfast. In Seabrook, Habanero's. If you are in Deer Park, Chalupa's isn't bad either. I love all the photos in this place and the very "homey" feel. I am sure the locals are lucky to have them...I just think I have a different palate for breakfast tacos. Great hot sauce is very important. The one strip of bacon versus cooking the pieces into the eggs makes a difference. The right kind of cheese is also important but overall, it's the entire package. The tortillas could have been a little thinner and the ingredients a bit more flavorful but I have had BAD breakfast tacos and these definitely weren't that. Living 45 minutes from the Mexican border, you learn what goes into a great breakfast burrito. Visiting fam on the island, (they usually go to Nopalitos, which was closed at the time) we tried El Jardin. The front had no staff for about 5 min, then a stressed out Asian lady ran past us to clear dirty dishes and deliver food, at the same time by herself to multiple people, seemingly without using food safety protocols. We should've left at that point. All the stellar reviews kept us in line...stopped her to ask how ordering worked, (no one was acknowledged that was in line to order). That's when she took our order. She didn't write anything down, but left with about 8+ breakfast orders from those in line. There were friendly locals in line who kept us chatting, which was the best part of the experience. The rest was downhill...I have nothing against Asians, being half Asian myself, but to get Mexican food from someone who has the background, maybe even family recipes would've made all the difference. I was told she was the only one working until 8am when someone else came in, so she must have also made the burritos. I married into a Mexican family, and there is alot of love that goes into their delicious food! There was no love in this slapped together "Mexican" taco...(the tortilla was way too small, so it wasn't a burrito). It had beans when I asked for none, and it had a 1 inch piece of bacon when it should've had bacon throughout. The potato in it was cold and mealy as if it had been boiled days ago. So disappointing!! Idk if bots were cooking up the 5 star reviews, or the restaurant is under new ownership, but it was like we were in a different restaurant! I'd give no stars if I could. Just left El Jardin where my group of 5 sat with no help for over 20 minutes. Service is horrible. We had to seat ourselves in the back because it was the only table large enough for a group of 5 (average size adults and teenagers). We watched every other table get helped but us. At one point (15 mins into our wait) a waitress came walking towards us, made eye contact with me, and then she picked up the tip from the table next to us and walked away. We waited 5 more minutes and then left. Worst "service" I've ever had. They don't deserve one star. read more

This place is horrible. Was looking for a new breakfast place close to downtown. We knew that El Jardin was only open for breakfast and lunch so we decided to give it a try. From the minute we got there we knew we should have left. We stood by the front counter waiting for about five minutes for the staff to take there heads out of their asses and at least look in our direction. Finally someone strolled over to us...continuing their conversation with there other person across the room then...wow low and behold they simply said..."You can sit anywhere..." We found a seat by the front window and looked over the menu, decided on something and played the waiting game again for our order to be taken. Well they never brought over our drink order and finally showed up with the worst breakfast tacos and eggs/bacon plate I have ever had. I will admit that the salsa was pretty good but good luck getting a refill on it. The chips were a different story...this sounds strange but they had a burnt chocolate taste. Yuck! We left most our food on the plate and went to the counter to pay. There sat a very nice rather young girl to ring us up...but since our waiter couldn't be found we waited another 7 minutes or so for him to show back up with our check. In July of 2011, Galveston voted Jake Rodriguez's restaurant El Jardin "Best Breakfast" and "Best Breakfast Burrito". My favorite meal is the "Surprise" burrito- made with refried or charro beans, Scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon. You get plenty of food and can special order off-the-menu. .Jake's staff is friendly and attentive when you get their attention. Most locals have been trained how to get the staffs attention. Thursday are T-Bone Steak day and they are huge! Call ahead & the staff will have your order ready for your expected arrival time.
