Hopefully they're going to be as delicious as they look like they were. This place is busy, busy, busy. I realized quickly I was probably going to need to dig deep for my South Florida Spanglish. Thankfully I remember the verbs and words to get me what I wanted. All my hair appointments in Miami paid off. We ordered four beef empanadas. The menu does say there's potatoes in them, but the issue was more there was barely any meat and mostly potato. It wasn't quite what we were expecting. The actual empanada had a pretty thick crust as well which was different. We also got 2 pastillitos with guava, and two with guava and cheese. Those are money!!! We will absolutely be back for those. You can order online, and if you can't speak any kind of Spanish or speak very little I suggest ordering that way. I will probably do that myself next time. The lady who helped me was kind by not making me feel even more insecure over my basic Spanish speaking. Very much appreciated.

Yes, it was true that no prices are listed, but I didn't mind that if it was good pastry. As an Italian American brought up on NYC pastries and bakeries, I DO have certain expectations. I was overjoyed that they actually made cassata cake and they had tiny ones, too. I chose one of those and my husband got the Italian cake. Two items, just under $20. The cake was boring and dry, the cassata was a chunk of dense ricotta, two tiny flavorless flecks of chocolate, no as promised rum or cake, for that matter, and just a fondant icing. Zero flavor. Definitely not the cassata cake of my childhood and defining birthday cake of my family for 5 decades. Will not be back.

Excellent pastries, cakes, cookies, and breads. This is a real bakery (and quite a large one). I…read morehaven't been to any bakery that's remotely at this level in North or South Carolina. Even the most persnickety of New England transplants would have to acknowledge that this is a really good quality place -- they could hold their own against most of the great bakeries (many now gone) in the Northeast. And they are comically, absurdly, ridiculously, ludicrously better than any other bakery in the Southeast. It's a German bakery, so the style of pastries is a bit more dainty and exquisite (gewählt, even) than those at a typical New England bakery (where danishes are generally massive, with a thin pastry border surrounding a vast caldera of fruit or cheese filling). But, that's just a stylistic thing. The pastries at Strossner's are elegant, very tasty, soft, not dry, and perfectly made. The apple and lemon fillings are as good as any I've had anywhere in the United States. The cheese filling, and chocolate cookies and cakes are excellent, too. Everything is also very fresh -- these are clearly pastries made without any sort of preservatives, so aging will quickly show. Basically, this is the best bakery I've been to since at least 1984 (when I was a very small and chunky kid, in Fall River, MA, home of bakeries). And, like the serious bakery they are, they also have breads. Some very well-made authentically German breads, too. When there was a line, it moved quickly, and service was excellent at the counter. Everyone was very friendly and well-informed about the products. There are also some brunch-type items (quiches) but I didn't try them. They looked pretty good, though. My only fear for Strossner's is that, due to the apparent lack of competition for hundreds of miles or more, there may one day be a loosening of standards. But, since they seem to still be owned and actively run by the original founding family, it's pretty darn good right now.

When we tasted the cake several people commented the icing was whipped icing not knowing what I had ordered. I called the next week to share my concerns and was told it was definitely buttercream icing because she didn't do whipped. In fact, the lady laughed as she explained what buttercream icing was to me. I KNOW what it is and her's was unlike any I've ever had. So, if you're a buttercream icing lover like me, you may want to sample Stax's icing before you pay $87 for 1/4 sheet cake to be sure it meets the taste of buttercream icing you have in mind. Maybe it's just what you're looking for. ‍ The cake looked beautiful but didn't taste great. It was great for my hips!
