Great atmosphere and a delicious meal! Live music on a Wednesday night. I was on business trip traveling through the area and spent the night in Elkins. I am really glad we picked this place for dinner. I had the capacha and my bf had the blackened tilapia tacos. Nice change from the fried food we have been eating on the road from DC. Was in town to go snow boarding at snow shoe resort and saw this place on yelp. Three of us came at around 8 and were seated in one of their 6 tables in the dining area immediately. The atmosphere was GREAT! Something about eating in a house warms your mood and brings happiness like a home cooked meal. Two kids were even playing around the house (politely and without interrupting us). The service was great! The guy who took our order was helpful and fun. The food was very tasty and I was full from about 3/4 of the meal (el tigre chicken). We got local West Virginia beers and they were very good. After dinner we made our way back to the bar. The bar area had much more of a bar feel than the traditional house feel of the dinning area. There was a pool table and darts and a stage for live music. We came on a Friday night and there were mostly locals in the bar. Everyone seemed to know each other and were all very friendly. Our bar tender was a hispanic woman who made you feel very at home. She was very friendly and even made my roommate a very good made up drink she just called "lemonade" that took a bit of extra effort on her part. She greeted many of the locals with a kiss on the cheek and big hug. The live music this friday night was really fun. They played a wide veriety from folk/bluegrass to blues to rock. Without a doubt the best dining experience my family's had in a long time. The food is mouth wateringly flavorful, and not just one dish, but everything. We ordered the chicken cachapas, plantains, yuca, and the tostones. Delicious down to the very last bite, and then you order seconds. Also an awesome craft brew selection and fun vibe. Excellent South American cuisine in the the middle of the Alleganies in Elkins WV. Start with their chicken soupa chuck full of little potatoes and chicken. The hostess claims it can cure even hangovers. The empanadas are done in traditional Venezuelan pancake style, stuffed with chunky flavorful beef or pork. The talapia was light and refreshing with lime, cilantro, diced tomatoes and onion. Yummy! The shrimp quesedillas were perfect. The shrimp was not over cook or tough. I highly recommend El Gran Sabor while staying or passing through Elkins. read more

Inviting atmosphere, generally attentive service (can be a bit slow when they're swamped, but where's that not the case?), affordable prices, live music, good beer selection, and some of the best food this side of Venezuela. Rural West Virginia is not blessed with a plethora of ethnic dining options, and so this is certainly a welcome change of pace from the standard bar- and diner-fare, but this menu would hold up against most any restaurant in a bigger city. The menu was not specific to gluten sensitivities but the waiter was very helpful in determining the choices and then providing recommendations. My husband had the Cuban sandwich with fries that he said was very tasty, especially the different dipping sauces for the fries. The chicken with salsa, yuca, and corn was also very good. I'm giving this a three star review because I had a decent experience about a year ago. I've not enjoyed the food but this just might be my taste, clearly several reviewers really enjoy the food - so I didn't want to knock it back too hard due to that. The first time, the food was decent, service slow but overall so-so experience not worth reviewing. This time however was terrible. I try to be *very* patient - COVID-19... times are hard. I get it. My issue was we were told 15-20 minutes for our food. We waited over 40. 40 minutes isn't unbearable - except when it is over double the amount of time you were told. They were out of green sauce, no big deal - not a deal breaker. They forgot to pack out salads. At that point, we were 40+ minutes of waiting and sitting in our car frustrated already... not worth going back for after that fiasco. Our food was Luke warm at best - I would say cold truly but trying to be decent here. We got it to go and ate in our car so it wasn't cold due to transport. No one knew what was going on and the place was just really needing someone to take charge. Unfortunate. Even the rice and beans were inedible unfortunately for the family. Located in historic downtown Elkins in a house that looks more like a bed and breakfast than a restaurant / bar, El Gran is a fine place to enjoy a drink or two, and listen to live music while having some authentic Venezuelan cuisine. The food is good, and inexpensive. The local microbrew is on tap, and inexpensive. Happy hour prices are amazingly low! . The owner is a sax player and music teacher, so there is local live music most every Wednesday night, and some other nights too. No hard rock, but an eclectic rotation of jazz, blues, or bluegrass. Try the chicken soup, cachapas, Mountaineer IPA, steak sandwich, and the fries. read more

This place is pretty much spot on with everyone else's review. It is a real nice house that you walk in that has nice woodwork. You thinks its small until you walk past the 1st dining room. Just seat yourself in the back unless you want a big table up front. The food was amazing to any standard let alone elkins. The prices were awesone. I don't think one of our meals were over ten and with drinks and apps it was 20 bucks. It did take a little time so just keep that in mind if you're in a hurry but if you're hungry in elkins this is the place to go unless you'e the type that loves fast chain food then cg maggies woukd be more your style. read more

This place never disappoints and actually seems to exceed taste expectations every time. We stop in whenever we travel to Elkins as the food is consistently delicious. Have only eaten the Venezuelan dishes since we can't readily find that cuisine. Local craft beer options make a nice pairing. I fell in love with arepas here. Arrived at about 5:30 and it appeared to be fairly busy. Had to wait an extended time to be seated even though there was space available. Waitress was not very sociable. When we did get seated and ordered our food it didn't take to long and we were served. Food was ok but nothing to rave about. read more

I have gone there just about every week for the last 8 months on Wednesday to watch the bands that they advertise all over the town. The bands are typically mediocre, but it gives me something different to do. Last evening I took a friend who was visiting from 3 hours away. When we got there around 8 (music is supposed to start at 7) there were about 5 people in the bar/music area including the owners husband, Rob Maston (who is in charge of the music side and also the music teacher at the local school). Some of the people were pretty drunk and talking loudly. They were all watching a WVU basket ball game including the people who were supposed to be the band. When I asked when they were going to start playing, I was told they were watching the game. I said I came to see the advertised band. I was told by the owner's husband, "don't let the door hit you on the way out." Most of the time there is almost no one there. 10 people would be a crowd, but I am always there and spend $60 or $70 when I am. The noise from the game and the load drinkers became intolerable for my friend and me. I wanted to stay but decided I had to leave and asked for the check. I went to speak to Rob, who was probably drunk himself as he was leaning on the rail where he was sitting. I reminded him that I come there almost every week and sometimes bring people. I said I came for the music and did not want to come to a sports bar. He responded by miming fellatio using his hand an mouth. I asked him if that was supposed to be him playing saxophone. He called me and a**hole. At that time, his wife came over, probably worried that Rob was going to hit me. She started pushing me and yelling that she needed me to leave (which I was already doing). She grabbed my arms several times and shoved me. One of the drunker guys then came over and got in my face. I said, I am trying to sign my bill. which I did with a 40% tip for the waitress. The drunk followed us to the door and we left. I would like to say to Rob, I am sorry I am not one of your in crowd buddies who hang out to support your poor saxophone playing attempts which you foist on any band who you have play there. I am, however a customer and a reasonably good one. i support your attempts to start a music scene. I pay for my food and tip your staff. I give money to the bands. I have enjoyed coming there. You need to do what you say your going to do and put music on when you say you are. You should not decide to get drunk with your buddies and watch them game when you claim to be a music venue. I am sure you think you don't need me as a customer, but you don't have all that many so you should probably reconsider. Good luck and I hope you exert more control around your students than you do at your place of business. read more

Amazing! The food is delectable, the atmosphere is quaint and the live music was superb. It was incredible hot in there, though. A lot of people were complaining and I was sweating, but the food is totally worth it. Don't go on a hot day I guess, still worth 5 stars because it's just that good. read more

We wanted to love this restaurant as my sister in law is from Venezuela so we were very eager to experience El Gran Sabor. When we arrived, we waited several minutes before anyone acknowledged us. After being seated, it took a grand total of 2 1/2 hours to get our food. When it arrived, it was cold and orders had been mixed up. The food was terrible...the arepas were cold and the meat dry and tough. The rice was soggy and the plantains seemed as if they were days old. In our party of 11, no one enjoyed their food. What a huge disappointment. Maybe you have to be an Elkins resident to get good food and service or the other reviews are false, but I would avoid this place like the plague. read more

Been to "El Gran" a handful of times since moving to Elkins in February '14...and have had take-out food also...the shrimp cachapas were outstanding! and that was the carryout version! dining in I have enjoyed a steak - in and of itself, the steak does not merit the four stars - and especially enjoyed the corn and the rice...lovely bar and bar area with more room than I expected to see when I first entered...live music at least two nights per week and always a festive atmosphere - definitely recommend to visitors to Elkins! read more
