I wasn't looking for anything specific to eat but this place called to me so I whipped into the parking lot and headed in! This is such a homey type of place that puts a lot of pride and joy in their food and showing off Latin culture. Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. This is a magical place.

The menu isn't huge, but that's part of its charm--they focus on classic Cuban favorites and absolutely nail the flavors. The bowls were outstanding: generous portions, perfectly seasoned, and honestly more food than we could finish. The empanadas were crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside, and disappeared quickly from the table. The yucca fries were fresh, hot, and perfectly crisp--some of the best we've had. The only challenge is finding the place. It's tucked away in the back corner of a small shopping center and easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Once you know where it is, though, you'll be glad you made the effort. If you're looking for authentic Cuban flavors in Baton Rouge, this spot is absolutely worth seeking out. Great food, generous portions, and a meal that will have us coming back again. Highly recommended!

These booths are great, they have graphics on them that depict everything from pastoral scenes to Aztec deities, all is bright vivid colors! You can pick up a menu from the counter on your way to your seat, or wait for a server to bring you one. There's a wide selection of Mexican/American dishes that probably include your favorites. There's some other dishes as well, including a great little selection of seafood. Another menu area to peruse is the torta sandwiches. All the food seems fresh and homestyle. Everything was lacking flavor, which was very surprising being this was an authentic Mexican grocery. Typically they have the best meat there is. Also, just to note, only one lady spoke English.
