My 5th grader has worked with Ms. Ginney for almost a year. Ms. Ginney is very approachable, warm, and knowledgeable about learning differences. My child has significant delays in many areas and we've worked with a variety of different professionals from the San Francisco Area to the Placerville area. Hence, I've had experience with many folks who think her/his method will create a breakthrough with my child -- none of which have had a significant break through with my child. What is different about Ms. Ginney is she pulls from many years of experience, and many different methods to build an approach that suites her student. Moreover, she does it with the love and care of a family member. She does this by teaching through my child's interests which maintains engagement, even during long 2hr sessions. I have been with Ms. Ginney for about 2 years now,and when I first started to work with her I was ready to quite school and just give up. But since then she has guided me back onto the right path. She has helped mold me into the woman I have become. Ms. Ginney not only teaches me things but helps me find ways to teach myself. I just cannot say enough good things about Kolsoum. She was recommended to us by another family who had used her services for two struggling children and had gotten excellent results. We found a neighbor family also had two kids working with her, with similarly solid success. In our case, the learning difficulty required not only significant expertise but a gentle persistent approach, which Kolsoum does really well. My daughter needed a whole alternate set of learning skills to deal with her situation, and Kolsoum delivered. There were many times I found that my child had learned way more with Kolsoum than from the school. The initial evaluation she uses itself was an eye opener, as it uncovered a learning difficulty that was anything but obvious. Kolsoum is professional and methodical, but perhaps her greatest gift is the kind and gentle persistence that opens up children who have usually spent years becoming discouraged and shut down because of some issue that even teachers don't recognize much less understand. While the description says she specializes in dyslexia, she is far more diverse than that. My child's issue was not dyslexia, but Kolsoum had a very effective approach nonetheless. I suspect that she is an excellent choice in any academic difficulty. Do note that some situations like what my child has do not cure, and that the best that can be hoped for is an effective set of alternative strategies to maximize performance. Nonetheless, uncovering and understanding the real nature of a problem really helps in looking to the future and focusing on the things a child does well, not to mention helping them deal with life when their difficulties cannot be avoided. My son was struggling for years and the school system wouldn't test him at the level that justified special ed. Kolsoum did the appropriate testing and helped created the justification for his IEP and future special ed needs. He is now doing very well in 6th grade, getting A's and B's and all the homework help he needs. He no longer fights the "extra" work he needs to do to work on his strategies for success.
