The most underrated Hispanic resturaunt in the Triangle. This place blows most Mexican chains away, including Chipotle, Moes, Los Tres Maguyes, etc. The the menu hails from El Salvador, the tastes intersect with lots of 'Mexican' food and is WAY better than most 'Mexican' chains across the country. Why? Because the food is FRESH, the tastes are muted but extremely balanced. There are plenty of choices and the amount of food for the dollar is a lot. This is one of the best resturaunts for this style of food around. read more

This is a hidden gem in Cary if you love Salvadorian or Mexican food. The food is made fresh to order and the prices are very reasonable with most meals under $13. The portions are huge that any football player or those just greedy seek. My favorite entrees here are the combination meat platters and the fajitas. Also they have fresh fruit juices. El Cuscatleco - Combination Fajitas - Salvadoran Near Me - Cary, North Carolina

Another strip mall standout, El Cuscatleco can satisfy lovers of the traditional and the standard alike! Whether you want an array of meaty tacos or a meatless pupusa the size of a dinner plate, this unassuming space has it. It's not sporting a fashionably kitted out interior or a trendy location but let's be honest - you're here for the food, prepared in a style and served in portions that would even make your abuela nod in approval. In addition to traditional meat dishes they offer vegetarian options (including the aforementioned pupusa, a meal in themselves!), and each appetizer could easily serve as a light meal so if you're looking for a quick, small bite there are possibilities. The staff are friendly and efficient, the food is delicious - don't fear the strip mall and delight your palate today! read more

This Salvadorian place is pretty great. I've been several times and the service and food have been consistently good. It looks like a hole in the wall kinda place but most places with excellent and authentic food usually are. The building is a bit small but every time I've gone, the parking lot is completely packed. They have several tv's and are usually playing soccer, so this is a good place if you're looking to catch a game and eat some good food. Everything I've ordered has been good but the pupusas are AMAZING. I often times go just to order that and get whatever else. I will definitely be back. Highlights: Pupusas! Affordable (easily $10 or less per person depending on order) Authentic atmosphere No wait to get a seat Friendly staff read more

Great little spot for some authentic Hispanic food hidden away in a tiny strip mall. I'm rating this based on takeout experience and ordering their bread and butter: Salvadorean food (they have Mexican-slanted dishes, but as suspected, not as good as authentic Mexican places in the area). Pupusas and tamales were off the charts good. The carne guisada was packed with tons of flavors, though I did miss the potatoes (which is actually the Puerto Rican/Dominican preparation of this dish, so understandable). Every aspect of each dish we ordered was packed with flavor (except the chilequiles). Overall, I feel that this spot offers a good mix of extremely authentic Salvadorean dishes and somewhat Mexican-Americanized dishes. I'd be a 5-star fan if they'd just go 100% Salvadorean authentic and not try to capture the crossover crowd, but that might be a business decision based on customer demographics. Either way, the prices are right - order the real stuff, skip the stuff you know will probably be better somewhere else and you'll be a happy camper. Sidenote: Have avoided eating-in due to other reviews of cleanliness so can't speak to that, but I'm from NYC where you don't wanna know what's in the kitchen because every place has something crawling around, so just took my food and ran - delicious! read more

When I first saw this place driving by, I thought it looked like a very run-down sort of joint that I would not expect to have yummy food. However, I ventured in because they were participating in my airline rewards program (so I figured they had to be somewhat legitimate) and was thrilled to find a cozy Tex-Mex style atmosphere. Their menu is English friendly, although as a Spanish major I appreciate the authentic menu item names. They have several Salvadorean specialties in the appetizer and entree sections, which is where I found the best dishes. We tried the yucca and chicharonnes, which are truly delicious. Succulent fried chunks of pork rinds that are crispy on the outside and meaty and fatty on the inside. Not that good for you, but who's here for nutritious food? We followed up with sampler platters containing items like the carne asada, pupusas, and tamales. I have to say, carne asada is one of the least visually appealing entrees, but wow what flavor it packs. And the pupusa is this buttery-fried grit-cake filled with cheese. This might become my new comfort food. We clocked out at $35 with all the above and a beer, so only slightly above-average Mexican joint prices. I can't wait to go back and try some of their other dishes. My advice to you is to give this place a try one night when you're feeling adventurous. read more

The pupusas here are absolutely phenomenal!!! Filled with the perfect amount of meat and cheese and SO buttery. The entrees they serve are also very delicious and filling. The lettuce and tomato are fresh and salsa is great. I also loved the rice and beans. And the waitstaff is so pleasant! Definitely try this place. read more

The best al pastor tacos and pupusas in town! Very affordable too, this is my go to spot to get my taco fix.

Good food and low price! The pupusas are delicious and cheesy. We had the chicken and cheese one, not much chicken. But for $2, it's pretty good! Probably should have ordered pork and cheese one! The taco salad is pretty good as well. The chicken was very tender inside. My husband had the beef burrito. It was also good. read more

This is why I love Yelp (no--they don't pay me to say that =P )! But seriously, I would have never known to stop in on this little spot hiding away off 15-501, save for awesome reviews I noticed rolling in for it. I love trying new things -- and authentic Salvadorean and Mexican food sounded like just the cure for my empty stomach last night! The decor here is kind of hokey -- painted parrots in a mural on the wall... and of course lots of Spanish soap operas on play for entertainment! But the food won me over for sure. I ordered Mohamed's exact meal -- fried plantains followed by platillo typico. The plantains were sooo nommy -- and dipped in the refried beans and sour cream, it pretty much changed my life. The entrees are MASSIVE -- as in, they defeated my husband's appetite. So be prepared for left-overs, or maybe skip the appetizer. Loved the tamal; I've never actually had one before, so no point of comparison. But I mixed up some of the salsa with the green habanero sauce to give it a little kick, and downed that sucker in seconds -- my fave part of the line-up! The pupusa was cheesy and not bad... just not quite as good as the delicious ones I recently enjoyed in Belize (life's hard ;) The yucca was good too, but I hardly had room for it after everything else! Hubby had a steak dish he thought was a little tough and lacking in flavor; but I'd definitely order what I got a second time. 4 stars, amigos; 4 stars! read more

After having gotten take out here many times I finally ate inside last Friday when I had a guest in town. As Christina G said in her review, this is place is one of the reasons I love Yelp. It is close to my house but I likely never would have noticed it or tried it had it not been for this site. The parking lot is small, the ambiance is tacky and you might find yourself the only non-latino person here but those are signs you are in the right place when it comes to ethnic food IMO. My standbys here are the bean and cheese pupusas and chicken tamales. The other reviews have mentioned how delicious they are and I've lived in Houston for 5 years and I like to think I have a good handle on latin foods and I promise they do not lie. My friend in town got the Bandeja Salvadorena plate which comes with pupusa, eggs, steak etc and he was similarly very impressed by the food though he mentioned the steak was a bit dry. I decided to try something different and got the ceviche as I wanted to see how they could handle something that wasn't one of my standbys. Color me surprised that it was actually a delicious and well done ceviche that I really enjoyed. Washed down with $3 dos equis and I was a happy camper. I struggled with what to give this place as a score. As I was writing this review I always planned on it being a 4 star but now that I've come to the end I can't think of a real reason not to award this place 5 stars. It is nice little family owned place that gives great bang for your buck, delicious food and they have always been nice when I pick up food and when we had table service they were quite attentive and nice. This is a 4.5 star that will round up to 5. read more

I am salivating as I write this review. Why? Because I'm stuck here at home when I'd rather be back down at El Cuscatleco for another meal. We have passed El Cuscatleco many times and never given them much thought because the exterior of the building (a former convenience store) and parking lot looked kind of sketchy. Then I read the Yelp reviews and decided that we had to try it ... and I'm so glad we did. We went for lunch at noon on a Friday and the place was humming. The interior looked a lot like every other Mexican restaurant but with some Salvadorean flair here and there. There were the required straw hats and beer signs as well as a cool plaque showing what money from El Salvador looks like, and a soccer jersey from a team from El Salvador. The two TVs played a couple of Spanish language channels and they piped in Spanish music on top of all that. I'd have preferred that the volume be turned down a bit but all that was forgotten when the food arrived. We shared the ceviche as an appetizer and I'm pretty sure the next time I go (yes, there -will- be a Next Time) I will order two of them as my main course. I would be very happy with just a basket of warm chips, the delicious salsa, and a double helping of the ceviche. It was really, really good! My friend ordered the chicken breast salad. It was enormous and tasty (he says). I had the bistec encebollado, and it came with refried beans, rice, and a small salad. It was absolutely delicious. The beef was so tender it just fell apart. You didn't need a knife. The sauteed peppers and onions were crunchy and tasty. The refired beans looked like what you'd expect but the flavor was not. I'm not sure what they put in it but it was different from any other Mexican restaurant I've ever been to and it was wonderful! What a surprise!. The rice was good (what else can you say about rice?), and the salad was more elaborate than what you get at most Mexican restaurants. The portions are large so I took my leftovers home and enjoyed them later that night ... except for the ceviche. That was gone. It was difficult, but I resisted the urge to tilt that platter to my lips and slurp down the remaining juice and miscellaneous remnants while we were in the restaurant. Next time I may show no restraint. The service was great, the prices were reasonable, the atmosphere was good and the food was excellent! I'm a fan! read more

Very yummy food. My first Salvadorean food experience. I think you stick to their strengths - papusas for sure, quesadillas, and chicken wings. I tried their sampler platter. It had a lot of fried foods. Very authentic food experience. I'd go back for those papusas anyday. So good. read more

I picked up from lunch from here over the weekend and was really impressed. The owner was managing the bar and stepped through the menu and helped me pick a good mix: **quesadilla (for my insolent progeny) **a good authentic Salvadoran steak for us, **simple fried chicken wings (which Dylan D. devoured) **the best pupusa's I've had in the triangle. Inside appeared to be just about as hip as a Torero's. read more

I have not been here in ages, but it's one of the places I miss the most since moving from Durham. Pupusas and plantano fritos, it just doesn't get any better than this. Stick to the Salvadoran food and enjoy. They used to have live music on Friday nights, it was always good. Have a song to request ready or they'll end up playing La Bamba if you look American. I mentioned the plantano fritos earlier, but seriously, you must try them. These are delicious fried sweet plantains with refried beans and sour cream. It is so good that I am seriously thinking to ask my husband to take me now, despite just breaking my foot. It's only 30 miles away and I can take an extra percocet. Viva El Cuscatleco! read more

The hidden gem of South Durham. I remember this place used to be a convenience store years ago, still can't believe a restaurant is crammed in here. Don't let the looks fool you though, this place is amazing! The food is delicious (and surprisingly cheap), and the service is always great! I was introduced to Salvadorian food here with the Plato Tipico and loved everything on it, highly recommend that if your unfamiliar with Salvadorian. They have the best Pupusas I've ever had and under $2 each, just try them! Now they also have your standard Mexican food as well, and I'm yet to have something I don't like. Definitely try their yucca its awesome here and I love their salsa cause it's unique. I would recommend trying their Salvadorian dishes and their "Especialidades de la Casa", but gotta mention their lunch specials are a steal, great place for lunch. read more

I realized my old review was 4-star, so it's time for an update. It's 5-stars in my book, one of my favorites in Durham. This is a solid hole-in-the-wall Mexican (+ Salvadoran) spot. As with most hole-in-the-wall places, don't expect much aesthetically and with service, however we were there on a Friday and there was some awesome live music happening. Food was pretty good. The two factors I judge a Mexican place by is the salsa, and the rice. The salsa that came with the complimentary chips was perfect, and it felt like the basket of chips were never ending. We actually couldn't finish them which never happens. The rice was okay, slightly bland and not my favorite yellow rice. I really wanted a chimichanga, but they only had meat options so I asked if they could make a veggie one and they made it happen! It was pretty good. The star of the meal was definitely the pupusas. I have never had them before, so I can't compare, but I would definitely return here just for the pupusas. Beware that we didn't get an itemized receipt. We were brought a dish of queso which we hadn't ordered, and weren't sure if it was complimentary or if we got charged for it. We ended up eating it though, so no complaints there! AND you get and INSANE amount of food for very cheap! read more

Great caribbean food choices, wonderful "Maduros" (fried ripe plantains), Yuca, Specialties. All in all, too much food in a rustic semi-tacky restaurant. Don't let the exterior or decorations distract you from the fact the food is excellent, the prices very reasonable, and the service is frendly and not over-solicitous. I had no expectations coming to this place, and was pleasantly surprised. Our meal started with chips and freshly made salsa. That really hit the spot. Chips were crispy, not stale. I got the camaron del diablo - shrimp in a spicy tomato-based sauce with onions and green peppers - plate, while my friend got the chicken and steak taco plate. My shrimp was a little overcooked, but I really enjoyed the stewed tomatoes in the diablo sauce, which had a good kick. Our plates came with rice and beans. Big portions. We were stuffed! I was going to give this place four stars, but my water had a soapy aftertaste. Food was on the salty side, so this was a bit of a bummer. It might have just been me since my friend didn't detect this at all. I'll be back! Authentic Salvadorian and Mexican homey place! read more

A guy came in and tried to sell us roses while we were eating. Mind you, I was with a group of about 8-9 people, so there was probably little need for roses. It makes good business sense though: you're with your special someone, and then that guy walks in with roses. You're going to have to buy some. But it was one of the more interesting things that's ever happened around me in a restaurant. El Cuscatleco is an interesting place. It's a Salvadorean restaurant, serving a variety of foods at relatively cheap prices. I came in and ordered the plantain appetizer and a pupusa. Sadly, my pupusa did not come (it wasn't on my bill either, so yay!) but one of my dining buddies gave me one of their extra pupusas, so I got a chance to try them. The pupusa was very good. The plantains were outstanding, and the bean-based paste that came with them was also really good. That, coupled with the smooth Salvadorean beer, made for a good (and at $10 for 2 beers and a side of plantains, cheap) dining experience. read more

It's not that often that I find myself near El Cuscatleco, but I've noticed it several times from the road. The parking lot was almost always full, and I've enjoyed exploring the growing number of authentic Latin American restaurants in Durham, so it's been on my list of places to try. We were up for something new tonight, so the wife and I headed over for dinner. A lot of other Yelpers have described El Cuscatelco's decor as "tacky", but I think a better description would be junky on the outside, and about average on the inside for a place which serves inexpensive cuisine. The walls are decorated with beer signs, paintings, etc., with mural covering one wall. The atmosphere is very much in line with other ethnic restaurants in the area which are trying to create a comfortable environment that allows the owners' to express their tastes while not intimidating the majority of their regular customers. The restaurant's website and other reviews hammer home the authenticity of the food, however, the menu and the preparations span from authentic Latin American to generic Mexican American/Tex Mex. I don't have an issue with this - in fact, it makes El Cuscatleco is a good choice for the adventurous and curious eater trying to please a dining companion who is uneasy about straying into the unfamiliar. Fajitas and nachos are offered along with papusas and tripe soup. Chips and mild salsa arrive quickly. I appreciated this as rarely are chips and salsa served once you stray past the established local chain Mexican restaurants like El Rodeo and Torreros and in to the newer crop of authentic restaurants sprouting up in Durham like Los Comales and La Vaquita. We started with cheese papusas and I agree with many others - they were excellent and the best I've had in the area. The slaw that comes on the side cuts through the heaviness of the cheese and corn. Without the slaw, I would have struggled to finish the papusa. I noticed many on Yelp recommending the platanos maduros, but we didn't notice them on the menu and instead ordered platanos fritos, which from the photo on the menu looked just like the platanos maduros I've had elsewhere. What showed up was not nearly as soft and as sweet as I had hoped. Perhaps the plantains weren't as ripe as they needed to be, or maybe my expectations were wrong. At any rate, I'd skip it the next time I come back and will look elsewhere for platanos maduros. The two entrees we tried were off the Salvadoran section of the menu: Carne Guizada, which is a beef and carrot stew, and Combinacion Guanaca which is a fried egg and carne asada (thin, pan-fried steak) with a half of an avocado and queso fresca (a firm farmers cheese). Both entrees were excellent. The rice, beans and salad which came with them were no different than I've had elsewhere. I would have preferred a Salvadoran crema over the American sour cream which came with both; seems like an easy way to match the claim of authenticity by using Salvadoran or Mexican crema, both of which can be found in all of the Latin American groceries in the area and neither of which would be intimidating to a native North Carolinian's palate. The service was fine, food showed up quickly. Absolutely no issues with anyone understanding English if that's a concern for you. Completely agree with everyone else that the portions are large and the prices are low. El Cuscatleco definitely offers a good value for your dollar. I'll be back one day, but probably won't go out of my way. I'd like to revisit the papusas and try the soups on the menu the next time I'm here. read more

I know this place serves Salvadorean food, but I can't help thinking that this place is just a dive-ier version of Torero's on 15-501, down to the Monday margarita special ($1.50/each). Price-wise, this place is perfect -- bottles of Mexican beer were $3 each and most entrees were $10 - $13. Plus, I can't complain about the portions -- plenty of free chips and salsa and huge entrees meant that I took a box home for dinner the next day. For dinner, I ordered the beef stew (can't remember the Spanish name), while my friends ordered the pork chops. While my entree was good, the pork chops were a little chewy and bland. So, overall, the food was 'meh.' Also, the night that we came, the place was packed as people were watching a soccer game between Panama and El Salvador. As a result, we spent the night battling for our waitress' attention. Lesson of the day: don't come here during a Salvadorean soccer match. On the other hand, if you ARE coming here to watch soccer, be sure to get a seat facing the television in the back, since the one in the front is old and decrepit. Would I come back again? I guess, for the same reason I go to Torero's -- it's too close and too cheap to ignore. read more

So, Salvadorian food, right? I'm never sure what to expect when I go to try new things. I'm always skeptical and usually end up being pleasantly surprised. So it was with my trip to El Cuscatleco. I ordered the plato tipico; it's a sampler of Salvadorian specialties. Not a bad way to go at all for a newbie. I don't know why I was skeptical...fired plantains don't sound like a bad idea in any country. For the unadventurous, though, they still offer familiar-sounding items like tacos and burritos as well as a few vegetarian options for the unadventurous non-carnivore members of your crowd. Located on Garret Road near 15-501, it's easy to be sketched out and give it a miss before you go in. I think that would be a mistake. And we don't like mistakes around here. read more

First, the bad: This place definitely is rather ghetto on the outside and does sit right next to a large housing project in Durham that is a regular visit for Durham PD. The clientele is largely, if not exclusively, Latino and on my one visit here myself and my wife and friend were stared at by every person from the moment we walked in and until we sat down (it very well could have been an off night, but it made us feel very unwanted and unwelcome as non-Latinos). Its interior design is cheap, tacky, yet predictable. The A/C is non-existant. The menus and tables all had a stickiness to them, and it is very cramped inside. The salsa tastes like ketchup and water, and almost made us want to pay our bill for our drinks and leave. But then, the good... The entrees were amazing! We each got a different dish, and we were glad that we stayed. The seasoning, taste, and quality of the main dishes completely eclipses the unwelcoming ambiance and clientele, the dreadful excuse for salsa, and the sticky cramped seating. The wait staff was extremely friendly and quick to greet us and bring us our drinks and food. We noticed that most tables were tipping $2-$4 on large cheques, which is horrible (always tip a minimum of 20%) so the attitude of the waitresses there are not at all affected by bad tips. In short, good waitresses. Having lived in southern Arizona for many years, and having eaten at some of the best Mexican food in the US, I am rather critical about Mexican food. This place is about a 7.5/10. It's better than Taco Bell, and most of the chains in the area, but not by much. The entrees and staff are its strong point, but the salsa, the setting, the evil-eye-giving clientele, and the filthiness of the tables and menus take away from what could be a great little find. All in all, however, I will likely eat here again, and given my many reservations about it, I do recommend giving it a shot. For those unaccustomed to "real" Mexican food, you'll likely fall in love; but as for those who know better, it will never be more than an occasional, and never enthusiastic, visit. read more

From the outside it like a dive for sure, but don't judge a book yadda yadda... simply great food (and judging by the clientele, authentic) at reasonable prices. If you want white tablecloths with your mexican food, go to Dos Perros. If you want some great mexican/salvadoran food, go here instead. I always get the fish, which is literally a deep-fried fish, bones and all. This is exactly how it was served to me on a trip to mexico, and it's fantastic. Typical rice and beans on the side. The beans, that is all I have to say about this place. Unlike Nanas, this place actually has pilaf for rice...or something similar to that texture. The beans with the rice, a very simple combination, is undoubtably the best I've ever had at any Mexican or Latino restaurant. I had this catered (they did a wonderful job, I definitely recommend catering this place for an event) so I didn't experience the service or location of the main store, but the meat was hot, tender, and everything was fresh right up to the point we unopened each tray for serving! I just went here on Sunday night and I loved it! I got the Plato Tipicos from the Salvadorean section. The pork and cheese Pupusa and the pollo tamal were wonderful (I definitely recommend)! The tamal was wrapped in authentic masa (moist corn dough) and you could definitely tell that it was made with fresh ingredients. It was hands-down, the best tamal that I have ever had. The platanos were soft, sweet and very tasty. The pastelito (fried dough with carrots) was also very good and the yucca potatoes were good, but very starchy (they fill you quickly). The dish also came with a Salvadorean sour cream which is made with fresh ingredients and healthier then American sour cream. The restaurant was small, but it is family owned and operated and that's what makes it so great! Getting a parking spot is actually the hardest part. The prices are good for the amount of food that you get. For my first Salvadorean food experience this place was great and I will definitely go back! read more
