Dang, this was sadly a miss for us. I've been in the mood to explore some of LA's historic restaurants lately and I swung by El Coyote excitedly on a Friday night with friends. We didn't make reservations but were able to be seated immediately. There's a ton of indoor seating but the place did get more busy as time passed so a reservation could be warranted. Steak tacos 2/5, just not super fresh and below average for an LA taco especially one from such a famous spot Mango Margarita 3/5, this was nice bc it was icy and cool but there was no strong mango flavor present
This place is a landmark in Hollywood, so after all of the years I had to try it! Walking in, the decor is awesome, with lights and and fun stuff to see everywhere you look. The service was a little slow, but they were pretty busy so it was understandable. Im a classic enchilada and taco gal, so when I saw there was a special combo with my exact order I was thrilled haha so cheesy and saucy, it didnt disappoint! The fajitas could have had a little more flavor, maybe lime as well, but overall were good and very tender. Really cant complain and I understand why they've been such a staple for so many years!
I like to think of myself as a cheese enchilada connoisseur, and El Coyote's cheese enchiladas are the best in town!Boyfriend also ordered the two cheese enchiladas combo with rice and beans, and he agreed. Additionally, he ordered an à la carte beef taco. Everything was delivered to the table piping hot. We sat on the patio and watched the World Cup game as we ate. I ordered a game special margarita for $10. It was large, delicious and so strong that I failed to properly spell my boyfriend's last name while buying a glass sculpture at Modernica afterwards! Felipe was our fantastic waiter, who checked on us regularly and provided prompt, friendly service throughout our meal. We would absolutely be regulars here if we lived close by. This icon truly lives up to the hype! It's almost 100 years old, so they know a little something about good food and drinks!
Stopped by El Coyote on a Sunday after church for my first visit and had a great experience. The atmosphere was much more festive and lively than I expected, which made it a fun place to spend the afternoon. Service was excellent, and our server's friendly, funny personality made the meal even more enjoyable. Before our food arrived, we were served chips with three different sauces. One was mild, one spicy, and one warm. All were delicious and a great way to start the meal. I ordered the beef flautas and really enjoyed them. The guacamole was made with real avocados, which I always appreciate. My son had the fish taco, which looked fresh and tasty. Parking is available in the back, and valet is offered after 4 p.m. for $10. Overall, a very enjoyable first visit. I'd happily come back.
We arrived at about 11:30am and sat on benches located outside. Two other parties arrived about 15Doors opened promptly at 12:00pm and we were the first ones seated and before we knew it, the seats were filling up and there was a wait. This place gets packed QUICK! The interior was dark and well decorated with fun things. My husband said that's what his mom's house used to look like lol He already knew what he wanted as he was the one who picked here for lunch. I looked over the menu and just had to try the flautas. I went with the shredded beef as that's my favorite from my usual place. They were very good and very full! We also had chips and salsa, salsa had a nice soft kick to it and the chips were crispy. For my entree, I ordered the ground beef enchilada and taco plate. I already knew it was too much food, but I still continued. Everything was delicious. The rice and the beans were good and the taco was crunchy. Overall everything was good. We did notice that as the place filled up, it was harder to get service. I will keep that in mind for next time, to just ask for the check when we know we are finished ordering.
I cannot think of a single thing to change that would improve El Coyote and perhaps that is why it has been here for nearly 100 years! And, it is great for vegetarians, if you pay attention to the menu items carefully. What is not to love? Extensive menu, special requests honored, free parking in their own lot before 4 pm, in a very popular part of West Hollywood, vibrant upbeat festive atmosphere, attentive service, delicious food, super generous portions, and very reasonable prices. Clean too. What a fun place. We loved it. Having eaten hundreds of Mexican meals in multiple cities over the decades, including in Mexico, this is in my top 10. I will let my pictures do the rest of the talking because, honestly, I cannot think of a single thing my blather would add to them. Don't miss a chance to eat at this iconic piece of old time LA history.
El Coyote has not been on my radar omg glad I discovered it last night. The service was great we were seated in less than 10 minutes. The server was very attentive to our table and what we needed. The food was some of the best Mexican cuisine l had in a long time. I ordered 2 plate combo with beans & rice shredded beef taco chicken enchilada. The chips and salsa was so yummy l could only eat my taco brought the rest of my meal home. The decor is cute it's giving cool vibes. I will definitely return soon valet parking after 4:00om is 10.00 dollars there is street parking available..
So, I've been here maybe 5 more times since my last review. I still get the steak burrito, and always super great (although a couple times it was SUPER salty.) The service since my last review hasn't been the best. We'd wait a long while before we get help. But our last one, the lady was FREAKING AMAZING. I wish I got her name. Anyway, the space was still nice and clean. Vibes were good, I just with the service and food stayed consistent, and were always great.
El Coyote is such a LA classic and now I live so close, I get to go all the time! I wasn't sure what to expect from a celebrity hot spot where a very messy Girls Night happened on the last season of The Valley. I was honestly surprised to see it's such a chill but home-like-feeling restaurant with friend groups, families, couples - it just seemed right for every occasion. Valet parking is the only option and $10 so prepare some cash moneys if driving. I like valet, takes the worry out of parking in wild LA situations. My friend and I come earlier in the evening as the pseudo-seniors we are, so usually can just walk right in and grab a table. The staff is always so welcoming and some of the servers treat you like you're a part of their family instantly. Our server ended the night by saying, See you Manana! jajaja I was also surprised with how good everything we have had has been. From the Flautas appetizer of thick meaty rolls served with guacamole to their street tacos on corn tortillas, shockingly good! Get the steak in your fajitas or tacos - the seasoning and plumpness of it can't be beat. Free chips and salsa with every order. I get the hype now. I love El Coyote~!
I haven't stopped thinking about El Coyote since I dined here. The food is incredible and melts in your mouth. The enchilada was my favorite thing I had here! The chicken tortilla soup was delicious and very flavorful. I also got an appetizer sampler platter and it was great. This place has a fascinating history. Dining here was fun and a true unique LA experience. I'll definitely be coming back soon!!!
El Coyote is an institution and has been around for almost 100 years. The ambiance is dark, there are red leather booths, big portions, and huge friendly personalities from the servers who have been there for a long time. My husband ordered the smothered burrito in red sauce and did it La Cocina style which added sour cream, guac, and pico on top to make it extra sloppy. He licked the plate clean. I ordered the combination plate with a crispy shredded beef taco and a green corn tamale. The refried beans were super smooth, rice was yummy, the beef taco was crispy and just the right amount of greasy with crisp lettuce and fresh tomatoes on top. The green tamale had a green chile inside with a sweet masa. The sweetness threw me off a bit but it was good, just different than what I'm used to. The table salsa has a slight kick paired with the warm salty tortilla chips and the service was superb and speedy. Parking is complimentary before 4pm and valet is only $10 afterwards which is a steal in this neighborhood. I'll definitely return with family in tow when they visit.
A little gem in LA. I came here after a hike, it was early afternoon before the dinner rush. The parking is valet only but there are neighborhoods around to park in. We were greeted right away and sat right away, no wait at the time we went. The service was fast and friendly and attentive. I really liked the interior decor it's so cute reminded me of a vacation with the cute lights. I ordered the Chile relleno with only beans and my friend ordered the grilled fish tacos with a side of rice and beans. We also got the guac and chips, surprisingly it was such a little amount for the price. The entrees had good flavor and were homestyle. I would definitely come back again and order some drinks.
Favorite place in all of Los Angeles! And my favorite cocktail; the scratch margarita... so delicious and so strong.
Not bad...... Visited this place for the first time with my lovely family and I can't say its something to rave about, but it was good, heres why: Facility - 4 astars: love the decor and the homie feel. Very clean and presentable despite the age of the building. Foos - 4 stars: The first was very tasty but the menu is very limited. I am not uaed to a limited menu at a Mexican restaurant. It seems to me there are just enchiladas, tacos and burritos. Missing was your sopas, fried whole fish, and some other things im used to seeing. Prices and portions- 4 stars: prices were decent, not the best. Portions were just right. Would i come on my own again? I don't think so. Unfortunately or fortunately, there are many other Mexican restaurants in LA that compete highly. Come give them a try, perhaps your opinion will differ. read more

I have been coming to El Coyote with my family since I was about eight years old, so this is not a review I ever expected to write. I came in simply wanting to enjoy dinner with my cousin at a place that has been part of my family's history for years, and instead I left completely disgusted by the lack of professionalism and integrity. We were sitting on the patio and ordered Casamigos Reposado. Instead, the waiter brought us Casamigos Blanco and simply served it as though we would not know the difference between what we ordered and what was placed in front of us. No one came over beforehand to say, "We're out of Reposado, but we have Blanco. Would you like that instead?" That is what a professional restaurant does. You allow the PAYING CUSTOMER to decide what they want to spend their money on. Instead, I had to point out that the tequila was clearly Blanco and ask why we were being served something we did not order. Only then were we told, "We had Reposado, but I don't know what happened." Excuse me? So rather than communicating with us, you simply made the decision for us and hoped we would accept it. That is completely unacceptable. I actually tried NOT to be difficult about it. Rather than argue over the Blanco, I walked to the bar and decided I would simply purchase another shot myself. I ordered a Don Julio Añejo. The shot was $16. I handed the bartender a $20 bill. He never gave me my change. I stood there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. My $4 simply disappeared as though the bartender had decided for himself that it was his tip. I was actually going to tip him the $4 anyway, but that is completely beside the point. You do not take a customer's money and decide what portion of it belongs to you. A tip is given. It is not taken. And yes, as a Black customer, that interaction made me extremely uncomfortable because there is a very old stereotype that Black people do not tip. I cannot say what was in that bartender's mind, but when someone simply pockets my change without asking, I am absolutely going to question why he felt entitled to assume it belonged to him. Whatever the reason was, the behavior itself was inappropriate and disrespectful. What is especially disappointing is that I know what good service at El Coyote looks like. PEPE on the patio has taken care of me and my family for YEARS. PEPE is wonderful. He is attentive, respectful, professional, and he would never allow a situation like this to happen at his table. And Pepe is not even an owner he is a server. Yet somehow he understands hospitality, integrity, and customer service better than what I experienced tonight. In this economy, people are making a conscious decision when they go out to eat. People are spending money they worked for, sometimes money they could easily have spent somewhere else. The absolute minimum a restaurant can do is serve what was ordered, communicate honestly when something is unavailable, and give people their damn change. The fact that I have decades of memories associated with this restaurant makes this experience even more disappointing. A business that has been around this long should understand that longevity does not excuse complacency. Customers should not have to argue about what liquor they ordered, catch a substitution themselves, or stand at a bar wondering why an employee has decided to pocket their money. That is not hospitality. That is entitlement. El Coyote, do better. Because longtime customers should not walk out of a restaurant they have supported since childhood feeling disrespected, taken advantage of, and completely disgusted. read more

We had a good time at el Coyote! It was raining so we ended up valeting our car and running inside. There was only a 20 minute wait so we got seated pretty quickly. They were running like a well oiled machine sitting people so quickly. The service was great we had the house margaritas which had a nice pineapple flavor to it and then ordered fajitas and street tacos. They were both good! And we had plenty of leftovers to take home with us. read more

this place really just rests on its history and does very little to deliver quality food or drinks, really don't know how they're still in business. Margaritas suck, they just bring him and ordinary glasses which shows you how much they care, feels like being a Denny's but with cool history. Food is mediocre at best. we definitely won't be back, hope they wake up and turn the business around in time read more
Food is mid but the VIBE IS RIGHT. Dark and moody, you sit there wondering just who else has sat in the same seat. Could be romantic, could but platonic, but all in all, very intriguing. I got the "#1" and it was the perfect amount of food for a catch-up meal where the other party did most of the talking. read more

This place is definitely hyped by the tourist, for the tourist . The service was slow, almost non-existent. We were initially sat in a really dark corner (near the bathrooms) and had to find a waiter to move us outside because it was so dark and there was a very loud group of ladies who's voices echoed in the cove area we sat in. When we were outside it felt like we were forgotten and waited again for our waiter. The food was ok nothing worth coming back for :( read more
The food is absolutely amazing as well as ambience BUT the service is very concerning. One of our meals didn't come with the side of guac/pico that clearly said on the menu it came with our meal, so we ask, get a rude response, and get the side. Our waitress wasn't attentive to us as far as not asking if we wanted water/soda refills until she brought the check which was at the very end, but even then she took 10-15mins to actually bring us our check and soda refill... THEN decided to not pick up our check for another 10 mins, mind you its late, I'm tired and trying to go home so we went up to another waiter who wasn't busy and he got our waitress to charge us. This was my second time here and the only thing that lived up to my last experience was the food. read more
My family and I visited this restaurant for the first time today and we truly enjoyed our dining experience. The restaurant itself is older but that's what makes this place fun. It appears that most everything in here is original. Our waitress Carla, was ABSOLUTELY the BEST!! She was very welcoming, friendly, hard-working and very attentive. The food was EXCELLENT!! The chips and salsa were GREAT!! The combo appetizer which included jalapeño poppers, a cheese quesadilla, and flautas w/ guacamole and sour cream were well prepared and delicious. Next came the fish taco combo which consisted of two huge fish tacos, rice and beans. Wow! The tacos were fresh, tasty and filling. The lighting in the restaurant was a tad on the dark side which made it a challenge to take pics w/o using flash which I don't like to do. The place was PACKED both indoors and outdoors in their patio seating as this is a very popular restaurant. We will visit here again when we are in the area read more

The food is very good quality and delicious. I will say the service lacked and the server spilled salsa on our clothing and did not offer any help. They also neglected to give us water when needed. The restaurant itself is very cute and classic Hollywood vibes with pictures on the walls of celebrities and a Mexi-Cali vibe. read more

My husband decided to bring my daughter and I to this restaurant, and WOW! It was delicious! I had the fish taco combination plate. The fish was not breaded too much, and it was cooked to perfection; with a delicious green sauce on the side. Giving the rice and beans two thumbs up because they tasted authentic. My reason for a four star instead of 5 is because it was really dark inside with a small candle and minimal lighting at the table. Make sure to take sunglasses with you on a bright day because you will definitely be blinded, when you walk out. read more

Acceptable food, not exceptional. Exceptional prices, about 25% higher that average. Full bar. Staff wear dressy casual peasant clothing. Cute. Good service. Facility outside is basic. Inside it's old world classic Mexican decor with lots of tile. Best value for a light lunch is probably the appetizer combo plate with flautus, poppers, and small Quesadilla Parking on side (not the back). $10 after 4:00. read more

They have been seating larger groups outdoors in the tent in the parking lot.

There is valet parking in the evenings for $7. Parking used to be free in the lot before 4 PM but that may have changed. Otherwise there is metered street parking.

Yes, indoor dining is available starting today (Friday, April 9th)!!! They posted it on instagram.
Does this restaurant have a patio and allow dogs?
They have a patio... I’ve been there many times and have never seen any dogs. I’m going to say no because you have to walk through the restaurant to get to the patio
Is the restaurant open for sit down dining, 3/16/20?
Mayor Garcetti ordered all restaurants to close their in-person dining. Not sure if they are still doing takeout.…
