I was craving hot dogs but didn't want Sonic nor did I want to go to the north side for any Chicago style hot dogs even though they are good AF. But I've heard about El Chunky, a small indie hot dog restaurant that has been open on the south side for a few years. I looked at the pics here on Yelp and looked at the menu. Different types of hot dogs are offered here with lots of sauce and types of meat but I didn't want anything weird or fancy. The prices here are pretty high, about $10 per hot dog. I'm more used to paying $6 for a hot dog but there's this inflation thing to consider. I pulled into the parking lot and noticed a huge sheet of plywood in front of a window that was broken due to a robbery that occurred over a year ago. I was having a slight hard time finding the main entrance. I tried to open of the front doors but was pointed at another door by one of the employees. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a friendly young lady at the counter and told me to take a search anywhere so I did. The ordering system was a bit confusing cuz I thought she'd come to my table but I had to go to the counter to order. I ordered the Chunky Street minus the mayo and ketchup, tomatoes, bacon and jalapeños. I was going to get the chili dog but I asked her if the chili had beans in it and she said yes so I changed my mind and got a second Chunky Street served the same way , a side of fries and a water. My food arrived minutes later. The fries were fresh and hot but they were the Ore Ida crinkle cut type and I didn't like them and didn't finish the fries and just ate the hot dogs. Both were good but the franks were huge. I should've ordered just one. I will return soon. read more

My new favorite spot! First off walking in, the service was amazing! I wish I had gotten the name of the young girl that helped us because she is such a sweetheart! Yelp introduced this hidden gem to me about a year ago and I came back 1.8.24 wanting to see what changes have happened since my first visit. They've expanded their menu There's now music and additional seating indoors YAY! They sell funny stickers for 1.49 check the pics out!! We'd heard about this place but never stopped in until today - we've been missing out! This place isn't a big place - in fact if you're not looking for it, you may miss it. When you walk inside there is a small area to order and there are 7 seats at counters facing out. If the weather is nice, there are also a few tables outside but their website does warn of limited seating. This is THE place for Mexican hot dogs. The dogs are 9" (and their window has a semi-humorous statement about 9" - I'll let you figure that one out for yourself). We decided to try the bacon and cheese fries, which were actually good. They had cheese sauce and bacon throughout and not just plopped on top like a lot of places do. My wife tried the Chiponky which is a dog, spicy chipotle cream, buttered sweet corn, cotija cheese, fried and grilled onions and mayo. I have to say - I tried some and it was . . . REALLY good! When we go back I'm going to get one! I was having a hard time deciding and there was a group behind us waiting to order, so I panicked and just ordered the first dog on the menu - literally - the Chunky Street which is a dog with bacon, tomatoes, grilled jalapeños, grilled onions, mustard, ketchup and mayo. It was very good as well. They have many other varieties of dogs to choose from as well as other Mexican food. This hidden place is awesome and you'll be glad you stopped by! CAN Y'ALL HANDLE 9 INCHESS OF THICC JUICY MEATT? Not only are the hot dogs one of a kind their al pastor tacos were the best I ever had! They got 9 inchers packed with a generous amount of toppings and lots of combinations to try out! The sausages themselves were thick and juicy and the buns were super light and fluffy! We got the #3 chunky street hot dog and the crispy onions were so so good. The toppings go well with the hot dog and it was so filling. One issue was that the hot dogs were so long that it was hard to pick them up without spilling any of the yummy toppings. The buns were so light that the fillings broke through them sometimes. I also got the mini tacos and I think they come with either 4 or 5 small tacos and you can either choose beef or pork. I got the beef al pastor and it comes with lots of cilantro, oninos, guacamole, and spicy salsa on the side. These were definitely so good and authentic and so filling! Defintely a great menu item! The resteraunt is kind of small inside but they do have outdoor seating! Great hole in the wall and this place definitely deserves more recognition! Super innovative menu with super friendly staff. Stopped in after attending a wrestling show nearby, so it was probably around midnight. The service was amazing we were served quickly, the food was served fast and tasted amazing, and had nice chill vibes. Second time at El Chunky. The first time I was where was part of a promo and the food was delicious but I came around 5pm. Today I was wanting late night eats that wasn't Whataburger! We arrived around 10:30pm. By the time I decided what to get I was about 1.5 miles away so I didn't want to go order online. They've added a nacho and a taco menu since the last time I was here and I loved the options! I ordered a corn cup and a Corndog as well as the Fajita Hotdog. I was told 10 minutes but it ended up being closer to 30!! We ordered to go. The corn cup was packaged with a sealed lid which I appreciated. The food was delicious as it was before and it kept on the 15 minute ride home. There were revolving customers which I love for this small, local business. But the 30 minute wait was ridiculous!! Yelp Elite picked a good one! Located in the Roosevelt neighborhood, this was a treat. The store is right off of S Presa and easily located across from the dollar general and other businesses. I don't often eat hot dogs, actually rarely do I eat them but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it out as an elite pick and this was a nice surprise. The hot dogs are fairly big in size and they didn't skimp on the fillings. For the Yelp elite, we received two hot dogs, one being the fajita and I wasn't sure if the other one was the nacho. The fajita had guacamole as an added bonus and the fajita had fried onion toppings. Both were satisfying and full of flavor. The outdoor seating has seats and an area big enough for a standing crowd. You can access it from either the inside or outside. There were no seats inside the business. The artwork on the side of the building added to the theme nicely. After your visit to the Mission Concepcion or taking in games at the Complex nearby, stop in and try a different approach to the traditional hot dogs. They definitely have some flavorful choices. Decided to drive across town and give this place a try since I've always heard so much about it and it didn't disappoint. The service was pretty amazing from the moment we walked in the door. The cashier was patient and helped us navigate the menu and decide on what sounded good to my daughter and I. She close the corn dog (go figure) and she killed it. Limited parking to the left of the restaurant, under the mural (great backdrop for selfies!). But plenty of parking around the block, so no worries. Outdoor only seating that is limited.
