On our 3 days in Golden I ate here twice and would have gone a third time if I could have. Excellent tacos!

Tucked right in the heart of downtown Golden, this cozy little spot is easy to miss--but absolutely worth finding. The space itself is quite small, with just a few indoor tables and some seating out front to people watch. What really stood out was the warm, welcoming staff. Service was quick, and everything came out fresh and hot. We tried the beef super arepa and the pork pupusa--both were packed with flavor and seriously satisfying. The only miss for us was the coconut lemonade, which leaned more bitter than refreshing. That said, it didn't take away from the overall experience. The menu is on the smaller side, but honestly, that works in its favor--everything feels intentional and well-executed. Definitely a spot we'll be returning to, especially to work our way through the rest of the menu. read more

As Salvadoran tourist we love supporting Hispanic / Latin places. We came here and I ordered a pupusa with cheese and meat and was given only meat. Btw meat is a $5 add on. We also ordered plantains just for them to not be plantains entirely! It was something else that didn't even have the look or taste of plantains. If you order to go they don't put the wet stuff in a separate container then the food and will spill onto the rest of your food! The agua de sandia was clearly made with tap water and had more of a metallic taste than watermelon and was damn near clear. Do NOT COME HERE!!! read more

This restaurant is the best!!! I come here often and get their vegetarian arepa. The flavors are delicious, it's a nice filling casual meal, and it's not too expensive. The actual shop is quite small but I rarely have an issue getting a table. It's run by a cute duo and they work nearly all the hours. Also, they are only open for lunch hours. I wish they did dinner too but I wouldn't want the duo to overwork themselves. read more

Do you have a go to restaurant that you love but don't get to frequent often? Well, El Callejon is my go to restaurant that I have to visit whenever I'm in Golden Colorado! They are a small restaurant that has exceptionally authentic Latin food right on the Main Street in Downtown Golden. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I never have to wait more than a few minutes and my custom order is handed to me. I usually get the food to go because my entire clan of family and friends love this place as much as I do and I can't enjoy the food without them! I was looking for some good vegetarian options while we were adventuring in Golden. I came upon El Callejon and decided to check it out on a Friday afternoon. This place is a literal hole in the wall with a few tables. Don't be fooled, though! This small restaurant packs major flavor into its food. There are ample vegetarian options too. I opted for the veggie burrito. It comes filled with beans, peppers, onions, cheese, rice and probably a few other things I've missed. The sauce on it is delightful. My wife got a chicken quesadilla which came with 3 different sauces and she absolutely devoured it. The food came out fast and the prices were great for the portion sizes. I've told all my friends about El Callejon, it's my guilty pleasure in Golden and my favorite burrito around town- when I get a burrito I'm coming to El Callejon. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my order, and there's usually a spot to wait in the restaurant. My only gripe is that they've gotten more expensive- but it's a guilty pleasure for a reason. I won't dock the score for that because the black bean vegetarian burrito is absolutely stellar and worth it every once in a while. Love locally owned businesses, love El Callejon. read more

It was too expensive for what it was. Food was okay but I'm not sure that I would go back.

This is a small shop that is only open for take out (they closed their dining tables) and there are only 2 tables outside with a few seats. Let me preface this with the food here is pretty much all frozen and reheated. I wish I knew that before I came but I quickly figured out that they offer frozen takeaway that you can cook at home that they will provide instructions for. I had two pork pupusas which were $7 each, which is outrageous but they were just ok. The filling was fine but the curtido (slaw) was not like typical Salvadoran curtido and the red salsa was more to the likes of marinara sauce. The lady taking the orders at the counter was very rude and unfriendly. After each item ordered she would interrupt you talking to yell to the back what to take out of the freezer and throw on the stove. Overall, the food is just ok but I wouldn't return. I hate to leave a poor review for a small business but there's no need for the attitude. read more

I was so excited to see this little Salvadoran spot in Golden! There are no tables inside to sit at (location is very small). However, it was a nice day out and there are some tables outside you can sit at. I tried the chicken arepa and chicken pupusa. Both items were delicious and filling! The curtido (pickled veg) was also good. As a Salvadoran myself, trust me! ;) A good spot that's worth checking out. I would definitely come back here next time I'm in the area. read more

Everything was just really really dry... The best thing was the spinach mushroom pupusa, but the chicken pupusa, arepas, and tamales were underwhelming. It was hard to eat the arepas without dousing them in sauce (which was basically just mayo). The tamale also didn't have enough filling. I think that coming from California I'm spoiled with good pupusas and tamales. I wouldn't recommend eating here when there are probably better options in the Golden area. read more

The lady in charge is not nice. I made an order over the phone, the same order I've been making because I enjoy the food there, and she got it wrong. She also refunded the difference, and did it with an attitude and only gave me $2 instead of the $4 I was supposed to get. They were busy when I got there for the 4 pupusas that I had ordered, and when I finally got my food and got to my car I realized that she had given me arepas instead. I went back and when I told her that she got it wrong she sighed very loudly and went to go look at what she had written down. She then told me that I said arepas, I told her I had said pupusas. Like I said, I get the same thing every time. She rolled her eyes and went to go tell her husband. I did get the food a while longer after and then I asked about the difference in price, she rolled her eyes again and then went to look for change in her purse. Very bad customer service. It is the second time this happens with her. Not very welcoming. Please work on your attitude lady. read more

A small location with a lotta flavor! We were in the area for The Coors brewery tour and got hungry. This place popped up nearby on Yelp and was also recommended by our bus driver. We headed in and the place is very small. It looks like it used to be an Alleyway between two buildings that was converted into a restaurant. There are four tables inside that seat up to 2 to four people at most. There are also a couple of cafe-style tables outside. The menu can be found on the wall, on the tables and in the front by the cash register. It's a smaller menu but has a lot to offer so be sure to look over and see what you might want. They have tacos, pupusas, chips and salsa, guacamole, burritos and more. I had a pork pupusa. Food was made fresh to order, so be patient cause it's worth the wait. When it was ready they brought it to our table. Everything was really good and we definitely could have split the pupusas between the two of us. The owners were on site and handling the register and the cooking and they were extremely nice and very helpful. Overall: A Good stop to refuel in Golden. read more

The tamales were super authentic and delicious and the wraps burritos and quesadillas were good as well. Wish we had time to try the pupusas they looked great. A fun twist on latin american favorites. Date of Visit: 7/3/14 El Callejon is a small (and I mean small!) restaurant in downtown Golden. It is conveniently located on one of Golden's main streets, which makes for a great outdoor seating atmosphere. Orders are taken by hand at the counter, where the staff could not be more friendly. We enjoyed the Green Chile Smothered Carnitas Burrito, Pork Tamale, Chicken Tacos, and a specialty lemonade. The tamale was done Colombian-style, using plantain leaves for wrapping vs traditional corn husk. They were much larger than the standard tamale, with a wetter, denser filling - Still delicious though. If you're looking to get your Latin-American fix, specifically Colombian, El Callejon will surely hit the mark. read more

We made a quick trip to Golden and didn't realize our errand would land us close to El Callejon. I've been wanting to try this for a while and the time had come. I don't like including pricing in my reviews because I know what prices are before I stop in. However, I do agree that $6 is a bit steep for a papusa. With that out of the way, I ordered the green chili and cheese papusa and the hubs ordered the chicken and green chili papusa. They came with a delicious salsa and a mayo based sauce. The traditional slaw had tomatoes which were mealy as all tomatoes seem to be anymore. I would just omit them myself. The sauces were a new spin on Papusas but were very good. They were filling and we left satisfied. We also shared a side of baked plantains which were good. I love plantains but hadn't had them baked before which was also a new spin. read more

Tried this place on a whim one day for lunch. I ordered a chicken Colombian tamale and a chicken pupusa. The prices are slightly higher than average I would say, but the pupusa was excellent. Outside was nice and crispy and the filling was savory and delicious. The Colombian tamale was huge - it is lunch in itself. This was my first time having a Colombian tamale, so I don't have anything to compare to, but I thought the masa was quite dry, and the masa:filling ratio was a little high. Wouldn't have probably even noticed it except our guide, my wife's cousin, swore they had good food. He was correct. Probably the best meal I had all week in Colorado. It was just for lunch so I had a chicken with green chili pupusas and a tamale also smothered in green chili sauce. Simple food but tasty and just the right amount of heat. I can't take a lot of spice, but it had a good bite without killing the flavor of the other ingredients. Unfortunately I live so far away that I rarely get to Golden but when I do I almost always make a point of stopping by here for lunch if I can swing it. I've eaten haired twice recently and this place just keeps getting better. The flavors are so unique and the execution of the food is so well done. I love the tacos and wraps but it's rare that I get past the Papusas and tamales which are my favorite. One of these times I would love to try the enchiladas. Yum!!! read more
