We ate at El Amigo today and honestly it is the best Mexican food in Valparaiso. The chip salsa was home made and perfectly spicy. The food was delicious and the servings were generous. 23 years later, this spot still slaps! Used to come here often until 2002. Complimentary chips and salsa upon seating. One puréed red mild salsa and one chunky pico de gallo. Both mild. Carne asada steak was succulent, seasoned well, gristle free. Lettuce, beans, cheese, rice wrapped in deliciousness. Friendly fast service. Calm atmosphere w 5 tables filed w customers on a Saturday summer afternoon. Refreshing horchata was a tasty treat to finish the meal. My friend enjoyed his taco plate. Great food at a great price! Very friendly staff. Mostly booths, so don't expect to seat a large party.

I have had poor customer service with el amigo only a handful of times and the same for the food quality In the Past. Recently I've been really disappointed on both ends. I ordered a super with cilantro and onion remove lettuce and tomato. I also wanted the super fried super crispy. Guess what I got? A soggy warmed up suppose from last night that they took live off of (there w as lettuce and tomato hidden beneath the sour cream because they literally refused an old Super that want pickEd up from yesterday is what I assume.) I was so disappointed to get home and see what they just sold me. It's been consistently down hill in the past year. Thanks, I threw it in the trash. read more

This place has authentic food BUT this last visit was horrible. I should have turned around when we smelled the place. It smelled like a dirty bathroom in the entire restaurant. This place is not clean and if we don't get sick it will be a miracle. The service was horrible but the food was okay. Even though the food was okay I will NEVER eat here again...waitress was rude and the place was dirty. And my feet stick to the ground when walking....bleach and some elbow grease would go a long way. read more

April 2021 - I found this place on Yelp. We had a basket of chips and two types of salsa. The hot salsa was excellent! I had a Veggie Burrito with rice and beans. The burrito was enough food for two people. The burrito was stuffed with rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. The hot sauce on the table is made by Tapatio and added a lot of flavor. My wife had a small beef quesadilla. All of the food was excellent and the service was quick. The prices were very reasonable. The only negative is that there is no detailed receipt. We look forward to returning soon. read more

Would I come back...? Maybe after trying the other places in town. I'm a stranger passing through looking for Mexican food. I ordered the combo with tamale and taco and enchilada. It was good. Nothing special. Not bad. Just good. Refried beans and yellow rice. My Dad had the chimi. He seemed to like it. Good flavor of meat he said. The chips were yellow corn chips from a bag in the dollar section of Walmart and not good. As far as chips go. I've had much better. Tue pico was bland. Mostly tomato's and the salsa was mild at best. Not great and I'm a picky salsa connoisseur. The Horchata however was really good. Overall, it was worth the price and cheaper than some other places maybe, the service was impossibly fast and the food was just good. I'm not disappointed. Great food and fast service. Staff kept checking on us during the meal so very attentive. Lots of food so we took some home

We were craving some Mexican food while traveling from Eastern Indiana to Iowa and wanted to eat lunch before reaching the Chicago area. We searched Yelp and found this location. Upon pulling into the parking lot, we were not sure if it was open. We could see some people inside so we parked and went in. The salsa had a nice kick to it as did the pico. I really enjoyed my chicken Enchilada and Quesadilla (Special #12) with double rice. My boyfriend liked his shredded beef burrito (which was LARGE). By the time we left, the place had almost every booth full, including a couple of local cops (always a good sign cuz they know where good food is). If we are craving Mexican again and in the Valpo area, we will be sure to stop in again! read more

El Amigo is exactly how it sounds. It's your friend. It's delicious, inexpensive mexican food. I can only speak for the night as i've never been there when the sun was up. but the staff is awesome. Jorge ha been working there as long as I've been going there. He both knows that we're vegetarian, but also knows what we eat most of the times we go there. It's pretty much the place we go after a night out or if we can't sleep and need some place to go. Highly recommended if you want some good, basic mexican food. We're from out of town (L.A.) Found this place on yelp. We were very satisfied. I had the veggie fajitas and veggie dope. Very delish! Rice was on point and beans were flavorful. Ok, if you're looking for an ideal place for a romantic interlude, this is not it. If you're looking for great food at reasonable prices, a wait staff that doesn't hover over you like you're their new best friends, and enough food to where you're not eating a part of your desk out of hunger by 3 pm, this is the place. Ambience? It's like south chicago, without all the glamour. I've been going to El Amigo since it opened over 11 years ago. The food has always been great. The burritos are huge, the sopes are the greatest you will find and the salsa is some of the best. If you want good, authentic, cheap Mexican food in Valparaiso, IN, this is the only option even worth mentioning. It is one of the few places that is open late night (open till 3am and 4am weekends) in Valpo. Chips and salsa are solid, but you can't go wrong with a taco or a burrito. The pork is incredible, but chorizo with egg or melanesa (breaded steak) is money as well. If you want great, authentic, cheap, quick, Mexican food this is the place to be. read more

Here is a classic example of taking a restaurant for what you want it to be instead of what it is. El Amigo is a great place for dirt cheap mexican food that is about one step above Taco Bell. That's all. But for the price it's ten steps above. If you are holding this place up to some standard of fine dining, then you miss the whole point of what they are trying to do here. To properly take it in, I'd recommend eating in the dingy dining area as opposed to taking it to go. The chips and salsa and general decor are as disagreeable as they are an experience to savor.
