23 years later, this spot still slaps! Used to come here often until 2002. Complimentary chips and salsa upon seating. One puréed red mild salsa and one chunky pico de gallo. Both mild. Carne asada steak was succulent, seasoned well, gristle free. Lettuce, beans, cheese, rice wrapped in deliciousness. Friendly fast service. Calm atmosphere w 5 tables filed w customers on a Saturday summer afternoon. Refreshing horchata was a tasty treat to finish the meal. My friend enjoyed his taco plate. Hope to return sooner than another 23 years! A+ read more

My fiancé and I had not had El Amigos food since high-school until a couple of weeks ago. We both got cheese steak tacos with rice and beans, chips, and 2 different types of salsa. The food is so fresh and tastes so authentic. The service is always so fast whether you go it to go or eat there. The ambiance of the restaurant is small and old school with booths. Many people do choose to order for pick up. Greatly afordable. Highly recommend! read more

Great food, service is just as good nice atmosphere great for lunch or dinner I drive an hour for it regularly lol

Great staff great food it's always fun and a joy to order from them whether we dine in or take out

We ate at El Amigo today and honestly it is the best Mexican food in Valparaiso. The chip salsa was home made and perfectly spicy. The food was delicious and the servings were generous. The service was also great. Skip the other Mexican restaurants and eat here. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great food at a great price! Very friendly staff. Mostly booths, so don't expect to seat a large party.

I have had poor customer service with el amigo only a handful of times and the same for the food quality In the Past. Recently I've been really disappointed on both ends. I ordered a super with cilantro and onion remove lettuce and tomato. I also wanted the super fried super crispy. Guess what I got? A soggy warmed up suppose from last night that they took live off of (there w as lettuce and tomato hidden beneath the sour cream because they literally refused an old Super that want pickEd up from yesterday is what I assume.) I was so disappointed to get home and see what they just sold me. It's been consistently down hill in the past year. Thanks, I threw it in the trash. read more

Food was great was absolutely delicious . We had a party of 6 and the service was perfect. Food was priced very well .

This place has authentic food BUT this last visit was horrible. I should have turned around when we smelled the place. It smelled like a dirty bathroom in the entire restaurant. This place is not clean and if we don't get sick it will be a miracle. The service was horrible but the food was okay. Even though the food was okay I will NEVER eat here again...waitress was rude and the place was dirty. And my feet stick to the ground when walking....bleach and some elbow grease would go a long way. read more

Good Mexican food at a solid price. No issues with picking up our to go order. Will return when back in the area.

April 2021 - I found this place on Yelp. We had a basket of chips and two types of salsa. The hot salsa was excellent! I had a Veggie Burrito with rice and beans. The burrito was enough food for two people. The burrito was stuffed with rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. The hot sauce on the table is made by Tapatio and added a lot of flavor. My wife had a small beef quesadilla. All of the food was excellent and the service was quick. The prices were very reasonable. The only negative is that there is no detailed receipt. We look forward to returning soon. read more

El Amigo Restaurant - Veggie Burrito, Beans, and Rice - Mexican Near Me - Valparaiso, Indiana

Would I come back...? Maybe after trying the other places in town. I'm a stranger passing through looking for Mexican food. I ordered the combo with tamale and taco and enchilada. It was good. Nothing special. Not bad. Just good. Refried beans and yellow rice. My Dad had the chimi. He seemed to like it. Good flavor of meat he said. The chips were yellow corn chips from a bag in the dollar section of Walmart and not good. As far as chips go. I've had much better. Tue pico was bland. Mostly tomato's and the salsa was mild at best. Not great and I'm a picky salsa connoisseur. The Horchata however was really good. Overall, it was worth the price and cheaper than some other places maybe, the service was impossibly fast and the food was just good. I'm not disappointed. Well maybe a little in the chips and salsa.... See attached photos for more. read more

food is delicious, fresh, authentic! I've had nothing but great experiences here. fast service clean facility. plenty of choices on the menu. the burritos and tacos are my Go Too's! read more

Great food and fast service. Staff kept checking on us during the meal so very attentive. Lots of food so we took some home

We were craving some Mexican food while traveling from Eastern Indiana to Iowa and wanted to eat lunch before reaching the Chicago area. We searched Yelp and found this location. Upon pulling into the parking lot, we were not sure if it was open. We could see some people inside so we parked and went in. The salsa had a nice kick to it as did the pico. I really enjoyed my chicken Enchilada and Quesadilla (Special #12) with double rice. My boyfriend liked his shredded beef burrito (which was LARGE). By the time we left, the place had almost every booth full, including a couple of local cops (always a good sign cuz they know where good food is). If we are craving Mexican again and in the Valpo area, we will be sure to stop in again! read more

The food is so good. If you want authentic mexican come here. Amazing food. Friendly environment too. Staff is almost as amazing as the food(: read more

This is our go to spot for Mexican in valpo. I always get the sopas and the family gets steak tacos. Greta service and consistent food. Always a good meal read more

El Amigo is exactly how it sounds. It's your friend. It's delicious, inexpensive mexican food. I can only speak for the night as i've never been there when the sun was up. but the staff is awesome. Jorge ha been working there as long as I've been going there. He both knows that we're vegetarian, but also knows what we eat most of the times we go there. It's pretty much the place we go after a night out or if we can't sleep and need some place to go. Highly recommended if you want some good, basic mexican food. Their cheese enchiladas are awesome with a Pina Jarritos. read more

Still my favorite place for good Mexican food! They're always so friendly and the food is soooo good! Can't go wrong here!

I would give my right arm for this cheese dip, my boys who run this place always make you feel like family gotta love it !

We're from out of town (L.A.) Found this place on yelp. We were very satisfied. I had the veggie fajitas and veggie dope. Very delish! Rice was on point and beans were flavorful. My husband got the crunchy carne tacos. He loved them. Said the meat was cooked perfectly. My boys had the burritos and gobbled them up. We have no complaints. Great pick up service! Will go back! read more

Sucky service I advise you not to come here nobody came back and ask if we want anything else or not: so if you get really mad easily don't waste u time coming here then read more

Ok, if you're looking for an ideal place for a romantic interlude, this is not it. If you're looking for great food at reasonable prices, a wait staff that doesn't hover over you like you're their new best friends, and enough food to where you're not eating a part of your desk out of hunger by 3 pm, this is the place. Ambience? It's like south chicago, without all the glamour. But the food is amazing, and if you're not worried about no one noticing the clothes you paid too much for to hide your pandemic pounds, this is the place to be. Go there and enjoy. read more

Quarantine take out. We enjoyed our food. Burritos, quesadillas, rice, chips and salsa. Everything was yummy. The staff was working hard.

This is the definition of a hometown favorite. If you're from Valpo or the surrounding area you probably know and LOVE El Amigo. The prices are low, the quality is high, and it's open late. Perfect for lunch/dinner/or a 1 am sober up. My favorite is the steak quesadilla, rice, and a large queso. read more

Consistency of food quality is great. Prices are reasonable. Very busy, call ahead to order.

For affordable Mexican style food, this is the place to go! They're still taking carry out orders during covid which is great, because El Amigo is amazing and I am frequently having cravings for it! I go there every chance I get! Again, this is another staple in our town/region! read more

Hands-down, best Mexican in this town. Try the cheese dip. Absolutely everything is amazing and huge. One thing to know is that they don't bring a check. When done, just go to pay at the counter. That's a good tip for first timers. I also recommend the horchata drinks. Super delicious! read more

I've been going to El Amigo since it opened over 11 years ago. The food has always been great. The burritos are huge, the sopes are the greatest you will find and the salsa is some of the best. Everything they offer is good. It's definitely a hole in the wall and nothing fancy. But the food is always good and you'll enjoy it. read more

I've never been drunk here and I still really like it. It reminds me of Austin. Good Mexican food, nice staff, fast service, delicious salsa, low prices. It's a keeper read more

This place was just ok... it wasn't as good as what we were expecting. The food was not flavorful, the lettuce and avocados did not look fresh and the food was cold when we went to pick it up. It wasn't the worst Mexican food I've had but definitely not the best. read more

If you want good, authentic, cheap Mexican food in Valparaiso, IN, this is the only option even worth mentioning. It is one of the few places that is open late night (open till 3am and 4am weekends) in Valpo. Chips and salsa are solid, but you can't go wrong with a taco or a burrito. The pork is incredible, but chorizo with egg or melanesa (breaded steak) is money as well. If you want great, authentic, cheap, quick, Mexican food this is the place to be. read more

Authentic. Open late. Great chips served with two different kinds of salsa. Good horchata. The first time I went I ordered the Avocado Burrito. It's so phenomenal that all these years later, I still haven't tried anything else on the menu. Get the Avocado Burrito! If only they would deliver. I'm not sure I'd eat anywhere else! read more

This place is amazing. It has the second-best horchata I've ever had (second only to a Spanish farmer's market stand in Chicago), and the food is great. Each time I've been here, I've tried something different to get a good feel for their menu, and I've never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and happy to answer questions about anything they have. read more

Here is a classic example of taking a restaurant for what you want it to be instead of what it is. El Amigo is a great place for dirt cheap mexican food that is about one step above Taco Bell. That's all. But for the price it's ten steps above. If you are holding this place up to some standard of fine dining, then you miss the whole point of what they are trying to do here. To properly take it in, I'd recommend eating in the dingy dining area as opposed to taking it to go. The chips and salsa and general decor are as disagreeable as they are an experience to savor. Heavy intoxication is preferable but not required. Try the chorizo tacos. read more

Really good mexican food at a reasonable price. Staff is good .Chips always fresh salsa delicious There. They got beer. It's our go to place on That side of town read more

One of few restaurants in proximity open late. The only place too that I know of that serves sopes! Yum!! Its nice coming here late at nice after a long shift and just eating tasty Mexican food. Try a tongue taco, or a chicken sope..the horchata too! read more

I go there at least 3 times a month. The steak burrito and beef taco's are really good and so are the nacho's. All meals served with complimentary chips and salsa. Service is fast and good. Very authentic food.Good prices too. read more

Horrible service, took 5 minutes before he even came out to attend us when there was only two other tables full besides us. Extremely greasy tacos that are not tasty. Aged food and microwaved instead of freshly made. Avoid this place, horrible mexican restaurant compared to others I have been. They don't even carry any authentic mexican hot sauces. read more

Always have enjoyed the food and service but been here 45 minutes and still waiting. Will be our last trip. Ridiculous.
