Stopover in Rangely for the night and the wife and I needed to eat. I believe there are currently three restaurants open in this small town. All had some questionable reviews, but the only knock against El Agave was two recent reviews griping about a price increase. In case nobody has noticed, the price of everything has gone up. It's reality and it costs $$ to get new menus printed, so I can understand why the prices in El Agave's menu are a couple of bucks lower than the final bill. I can also understand the credit card surcharge (4%). The credit card companies charge the restaurant a fee and El Agave is just passing that fee on to the customer. Again, understandable for a small restaurant in a tiny town like Rangely. And if you do the math on the 4%, it's a couple of bucks and a small price to pay to keep local businesses of this caliber open. The food was really good. t was tasty, authentic Tex Mex. Not overly spicy, but well seasoned with really good flavor. The complementary chips and salsa were fresh and house made. The margarita wasn't the strongest I've ever had, but it clearly had fresh lime in it and wasn't made with a mix. Nice and tart with a hint of sweet. I had the tacos al carbon. It came with beans, rice, and guacamole. There were four tacos on corn tortillas. The beef was tender, properly seasoned, and plentiful. Quite satisfying. My only complaint really isn't a complaint, but is more of an observation. There was a group of customers (three 20-something guys and the wife of one along with a toddler) at a table who'd had their fill of drinks. Loud, borderline obnoxious, talking across the room to another table, and pretty free with their language. I can hold my own when it comes to profanity, but I understand that there's a time and place for it and a restaurant with small kids in it isn't the place for it. But as I said, small town, everyone knows each other so that sort of thing is going to be tolerated. These people clearly work hard (from their conversation, they're oil workers) and that's going to carry over into their free time. Was it a distraction? Yes. Did it ruin my meal? No. Bottom line... Food is really good and worth the price. Get over the price increase and the credit card surcharge. You'll pay twice as much at a similar place in a big town for food that's probably not as good. read more

Home made, terrific corn chips with superb homemade salsa, gratis. Beef fajitas sizzling as good as any in San Antonio. Almost didn't notice store bought flour and corn tortillas, but, it just didn't matter. So good. Rivaling any tex mex restaurant in San Antonio. Get a margarita! Seriously their drinks are huge and for under $8?! A great way to start the meal. This place was busy, so it took some time for food to come, but if you have a margarita with your chips, it'll be fine. I ordered the carnitas in a burrito covered with green chile with rice and beans. The burrito wasn't bad. The green chile was pretty good and helped out the carnitas, the carnitas were a little dried out. There wasn't too much cheese and the rice was fine. I am not crazy over rice at mexican restaurants. The servers were friendly and this place has good dinner in Rangely. read more

Considering we are in the NW corner of Colorado and I'm from South TX, this is good Mexican food. They're obviously from south of the border and their food is more Guadalajara style than most Mexican food this far north. Chili toreado!!! The Agave burrito was delish and the serving sizes are large. White queso instead of the typical government cheese dips served elsewhere. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have TVs for sporting events. read more

Just down the main drag of a sleepy little town, not far from the Moosehead Inn (also great) is this awesome Mexican restaurant. Skip Vail and Aspen and all that basic Colorado stuff and get off the beaten path. Order the Suiza enchiladas with shredded beef and you won't regret it. 5$ margs on Mondays and they're huge. No dinosaurs on this side but everything else is great. read more

I have been sampling Mexican food for 45 years, everywhere from Laredo to Los Angeles and Tucson to Two Dot. Generally the best indicator of a good Mexican restaurant is its chili verde. El Agave has the best chili verde I have ever eaten bar none. I would readily drive the 38 mile round trip from U.S. Highway 40 and back just to dine there. read more

My family and I stopped here in July 2016 during a 3 week road trip. We are from Texas - I am a 48 year Texan. I know my Tex-Mex. Rarely do you find Tex-Mex even good outside Texas - it is usually poor outside Texas. The food at El Agave was EXCELLENT. The staff was warm, friendly and courteous. Dont judge a book by its cover though because this in an old building. Furniture is old. It just feels old and worn. We almost did not enter because of this. But when we did enter we found it old sure enough, but clean and friendly. We felt better. When the food arrived, YUMMM! We were so happy to have found a great place to eat at with some of the best Tex-Mex we've ever eaten. And as the staff was so warm and friendly from the get go, the experience was just wonderful. Dont visit here for luxurious or even mid-range furnishings - you'll be sorely disappointed. But if you want excellent Tex-Mex with warm and friendly people in a clean restaurant, then I highly recommend this place. read more
