We visit Utrecht from the U.S. and the place we stay at is super close to Jumbo (yay!!). When we don't feel like going to a restaurant or cooking, we sometimes buy the prepared meals that Jumbo offers. They are so good! I also agree with Leah who sent in a review, that the prices there are GREAT! I will add a couple of photos. :)

The employees were nice and helpful whenever I asked questions ( I'm from the U.S. so I often had a hard time reading the Dutch labels) but they always tried their best to help me find products. The bakery section always had fresh pastries from donuts to baguettes. I also really appreciated the various checkout lanes which made checking out fairly quick. Nothing bad to say about this grocery store with the bright yellow letters :)

Back home in England we would always grab a sandwich on the go and when we moved here they were still non-existent. Now over a decade and a half later Albert Heijn to go seems to understand the amazingness that is the ready made, pre-packed sandwich and offers quite a wide variety. Luckily for me also quite a few (good!) vegetarian options. Other than that it's a good place to grab a quick snack, drink, lunch or even meal (salads and sandwiches) when you're on the go and want something delicious and fairly healthy. Next step: bring down the prices and AH to go will be travelling perfection.

A Turkish grocery store in Lombok? Wat leuk!…read more I come here a couple times per week and I really like this place. It must have the best selection of spices and grocery type stuff on Kanaalstraat. They have an extremely large deli area where you can buy dolmas, hummus, olives and other stuff by weight - and it's excellent. They always seem to have a good variety of produce and prices are reasonable. It's not the cheapest on the street, but it's worth it. They do NOT have a butcher counter like most other stores, and they are not open as late as the other vendors .

Yes, dragging, I don't really find Kanaalstraat all too interesting. We used to have a few shops that we frequented that have now gone that I didn't mind going to. But this shop, this one I even volunteer to go to! My dad loves to find some of the stuff that we buy in Israel and can't usually get here and quite frankly, I do too! I must say that the shop has lost a little bit of it's charm with the redecorating they did last year, but it does look a lot neater and it means more room for the gigantic assortment of nuts they added, including chocolate covered nuts. Mmm... Other than that, the shop has a nice array of cheeses, high quality fresh produce, lovely snacks and ingredients that you just can't get at a Dutch store and also a lot of different pasta's, pulses and sweets. The only thing I can't quite figure out is why the store is called Perse Polis and it says to be a Persian grocery store. My dad being a chatty Cathy of course knows his vendors and these guys are Iranian! Oh well, I'm not sure it's even a mystery that I want to solve. ;)

Shop's fine, does the job: -Love their selection of…read morevegetarian meat stuffs, they have some different things than Albert Heijn. -Don't really love the personnel. The cashiers are friendly, but the people out on the floor however seem a bit... unintelligent. To say the least that is, for example the other day someone had a pack of leaky yoghurt and instead of following the trail to see where it came from and where it was going, everyone in the shop (we did an entire round and heard each and every staff member on the floor discuss it) just asked a co-worker who's fault it was. They literally sought blame with whomever had left behind the trail. instead of just finding out where it was coming from, stopping it from continuing and just cleaning it up. In other words, these people aren't smart enough to do their own jobs. They also leave product standing in the way while restocking which is a thing that they apparently need fifteen(!) people for. The shop is not that big! Seems expensive to me to have so much staff walking around doing a job that four people could easily manage... That all being said, some products are cheaper here, some products you won't find anywhere else and the cashiers seem to know what they're doing. So for specific items we definitely continue to shop here.

But seriously though, this Albert Heijn carries a wide range of products, is clean, has wide pathways and also the previously mentioned self service check-out: LOVE it! I always did love this Albert Heijn, but now more than ever with our newborn son it's so easy that we can park in the family spots in the garage, grab the pram and head upstairs without ever having to be outside where rain, sun and wind can bother us. It basically just adds another layer of fantastic and seriously helps with keeping your car cool on hot summer days. And as an added bonus, they actually have a toilet that you can use. Sadly, a rare commodity here in the Netherlands. There's not really much more that I can say other than that we love this Albert Heijn so much that we usually make the twenty minute drive to this one instead of the eight minute walk to the one near our house. Basically it's the best Albert Heijn I know!

So, you've knocked down your store and built a brand new one. What do you do? Improve on the old…read moreone you say? Well, Albert Heijn didn't. While they may think it's the most amazing thing since humans found out they can poop, I think my poop is amazing in comparison to the new Albert Heijn. It's not specifically terrible, it's just that the old store used to have a wide variety of things. This one doesn't. I guarantee you that every time I think of a meal or need to get an ingredient I forgot at another shop, this Albert Heijn won't have it. Every single time I come here, even when an item is on sale in all the stores, I won't find at least one item on my list. Usually the most important item which makes me angry and I always leave dissatisfied. One word to describe this new Albert Heijn: poepzooi! (shit-mess)
