Maybe you’re wondering why my business is called Eighter Detailing. That’s a good question and a cool story that involves dice and a game of chance.
My home town is Decatur, and it has a long history, much longer than mine.
Legend tells of a Decatur boy playing dice and hoping for a double eight. He would call out “Ada from Decatur”, after the name of a girl he knew, which later became “Eighter from Decatur”. He was hired as a cook on a train headed to Virginia, and regularly called out the phrase as he and riders played dice. The catchphrase stuck.
Later Bob Wills used the phrase in a song, a character from Star Trek used the term in a casino scene, and craps shooters called out “”Eighter from Decatur, County Seat of Wise” when they needed to roll an eight.
Now you’ll find the phrase around my hometown, and local artists find inspiration in the pair of dice.
The name reminds me of home and everyone who came before me.
