I am a beauty queen and I've probably visited many hair shops in Birmingham just to purchase beauty…read moreproducts or hair products to gain the next hottest look. I don't usually purchase many cosmetics i.e. make-up items like foundation but I do love things like lipstick and nail varnish- and Beauty Queen Cosmetics offers a range of beauty products and hair products. I normally go to Beauty Queen on Soho Road for lipstick and nail polish, especially as they sell brands like Sleek which has only just started appearing in a couple of the mainstream cosmetic shops. For black women, it's sometimes really difficult to get beauty products for your skin or lipsticks that stand out on your complexion. This store is always pretty busy; it's the only one on Soho Road. One slight criticism I would say is that sometimes the staff can be a little too in your face, trying to get you to buy products. I wish sometimes they'd just give you some time to have a look in peace and then you'd have a better idea of what you want. When I went in the store last week, I ended up walking out and didn't buy anything because I felt too pressured.

THIS Salon has to be the worse salon in birmingham and on soho road. the owner is rude and a…read moreracist. The workers there are not qualified and do not speak a word of English, and have been ILLEGALLY employed (UNPROFESSIONAL!) I came in to get my eyebrows done and the lady ruined them completely she was too busy chatting away to her friend and took 30 minutes to do them which is far too long in my opinion. She made gaps in my eyebrows and completely took off my arch. My eyebrows are quite thick and already in shape they just needed tidying up, half of my eyebrows were gone! When I told her she ruined the shape completely she went into shock and said ' 50p off' - NO I don't want your poxy 50p back I just want you to focus on doing my eyebrows correctly in the first place and provide good customer service! I had to stop her halfway because I knew she was not focusing, I had to tell her twice to focus. I've got a wedding tonight and I'm not happy! I complained to the owner (Indian guy, fat with spiky dark hair) and he said 'your eyebrows were like that already' - where is the logic in that? What does a rude arrogant man know when he just knows how to rob his customers. He then proceeded to call me a P*KI and flare up the situation and i'm not even Pakistani lol - what an idiot. I'll be posting photos of him soon so you all know who he is. People like that need to be named and shamed. Unprofessional, rubbish and the salon is filthy, unhygienic and outdated! Spend some money on your salon and stop being tight! The customers sitting there heard how he spoke to me and walked out when he called me a P*KI. If you want to come out feeling worse than ever AND waste your money then go to Bollywood Styles on Soho Road. I would recommend going to Nishi's down the road, there are other salons on soho road too and in Perry Barr and Handsworth. I would rather give my money to a hardworking individual that provides great service, atleast it would make me want to go back! NEVER AGAIN

That's why it's important for me to have particular nail bars which I can visit that offer value for money and Nails 4 U offer value for money. I got a acrylic nails done for £20 and the lady who did it, did a really good job. I sometimes visit nail bars and the nail technician doesn't do a great job, so you always need to be careful. There are a few nail bars in Birmingham which are great and Nails 4 U on Soho Road is a pretty good one. One tip though, if you go there on a Friday or Saturday be prepared to wait because it can be jam packed with stylish ladies wanting to get their manicures, eyebrows plucked and long, wacky and wild nails put on. It's funny because you do get some ladies in Nails 4 U who work out with claws, lol. They don't complain, they are happy to meet your requirements and I always nail bars like Nails 4 U because you can take in your own varnish for them to put on. They also don't over charge to take your old acrylic or gel nails off, it's incorporated in the main price which is around £20-25.

When I left my nails felt tight and gave me some discomfort for a couple of days. I wasn't really impressed with the overall shape of the nails either. The sides of them were so pointy I cut my face whilst having a little itch! I couldn't wait to get them taken off so I went to a different salon and had to pay to have them removed. I think I'll stick to natural next time.

However, you can drop-in for eyebrow threading. My favourite threading therapist is Jyoti. She gave my eyebrows a shape that I never knew existed! And it costs just £2.50! It gets busy during the school-run when mums drop-in so I'd avoid going at this time. Satya is the head beautician who executes most of the facials, massages and waxing treatments. She is very knowledgeable and professional in her approach. She is also welcoming and bubbly. Just listen out for the laugh and that's Satya! The salon also offers mendhi, eyebrow tinting and bridal services. It's a homely salon with all the essentials and no pretence.

There were a range of products that they must use for treatments such as facials but I'm not sure if they sell these behind the counter as I was in too much pain to ask. Not my most favourite treatment, mainly due to the pain, but they did the job and I could wear a skirt once more!

It's virtually impossible to buy hair removal wax tubs from the High Street stores but I found it here for just £5! And they have a choice between lavender, aloe vera and pink wax. I also found that St Ives face scrub (which is the guru of my skincare regime!) is a lot cheaper here than elsewhere. They have a random selection of cheap cosmetics that tend to be in retro shades - Pat Butcher from Eastenders comes to mind! Although some of their eye-shadows and nail varnishes are interesting because bright colours are trending. Oddly enough, towards the back of the shop there is a post office so you can get your postal needs as well as grooming products under one roof!
