I rarely post reviews, but felt compelled in this case. The past few times I got take out, the restaurant clearly used day old rice as it was dry, hard and really ruins the sushi. I brought it to the attention of the restaurant and they denied they did such a thing. Given the fact that I brought to their attention that the customer can clearly taste the difference between fresh rich and old, crusty rice, you would think they would change that practice. I mean, really, we are talking rice. A 20 lb bag is like $7. They didn't. I got take out tonight and received old, dry rice. It is a shame. It used to be a good restaurant. It still would be if they did not employ such a cheap, foolish business practice. read more

Wanted to try this place because I saw it driving by the other day, I'm leaving Santa Barbara next week out of the state and wanted to try one of the last sushi places I haven't been , DO NOT GO , please go anywhere else sat down for 20 minutes weren't told anything found out from another table to order at the register... weird already. So we ordered up there my friend got two rolls and my wife and I ordered the endomasa dinner combo, 45 mins later the waitress brings my friends two rolls , they were not busy that was the first time we saw her , after about another 30 I decided to ask if my food was coming she ran away in a blaze yelled at the cooks completely didn't empathize for us , at that point we decided to forget it she would not take no and wouldn't remove it from the order, my friend asked to speak to the manager , she refused my friend had to get up and walk over to he manager to tell him what had happened he agreed to remove the food WE DIDN'T EVEN GET and after all this the waitress drops the check off for all of his food and continues to confront my friend saying we were rude and need to be nicer glad we went so we can tell everybody we know not to go here , horrible horrible horrible Should be zero star option because I rarely review, only if the service is absolutely amazing , or unfortunately like this one a place you should never go... read more

I had such a horrible experience with this restaurant, ordering during the pandemic. I ordered the "large" miso soup, which was very small for a "large" and was extremely bland and not tasty. It tasted like tap water! I ordered the "sushi" through DoorDash, and was charged $7 for 2 "nigiri" pieces. My order came out to be $27 for 4 pieces of "nigiri" and a miso soup. When I called the restaurant in hopes of resolving my underwhelming food, the manager yelled at me. I repeat YELLED and SCREAMED at me... I have never experienced customer service like this. I was treated so poorly. This was a horrible first experience with this restaurant, never again will I come here. DO NOT EVER COME HERE and support an extremely rude, disrespectful, and selfish business. All I was hoping for is a trade for something that I actually wanted to order, a refund, or even store credit. I didn't spend my college years in this town, so I was never exposed to Edomasa as reasonable cheap Japanese eats until recently. As recently as last night, in fact. We took advantage of what Edomasa offers over other sushi joints in town - the late service hours. I was immediately drawn to the salmon kama - oh, to dig into that collar for the tender meat, it's a treasure hunt I never grow bored of. Also on order was oysters on the half shell. Fat and juicy, dressed with finely sliced spring onions and a thin sauce, it slips in your mouth like that was its destiny. Three generous oysters for just under $6. The new roll for me was the buffalo volcano roll, recommended by a dining companion. It's a California roll sliced and laid out flat, then spread with a spicy cream cheese and flashed under the broiler so it's hot and golden. This is a very rich roll, definitely one to share round the table. Prices were reasonable, in fact, I'm looking at my bill now and am scratching my head a bit. I think I got undercharged. The ambience is still trending towards the younger crowd of 20-somethings. And I have to admit, the interior caught me off guard - it's not very intimate and cozy feeling. The floors were a hard, cold concrete and I felt a little like I'd walked into a school gymnasium with Japanese-looking accoutrements temporarily decorating it. But if the clientele is primarily dorm kids, or ex-college hangers-on, I suspect this detail is easily overlooked in lieu of those happy happy memories of substantial late night sushi. read more

3.5 stars for convenience and decent sushi. Stays open late and the quality of the sashimi and sushi isn't bad for the price you pay. Ordered the sushi / sashimi combo. It came with spicy tuna roll, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp sushi, and yellow tail, tuna, & white fish sashimi. The cuts of sashimi are generous. The sushi isn't inedible and spicy tuna is tasty. I also ordered 3 pieces of shrimp tempura which was crispy and delicious. I always order uni(sea urchin) if it's fresh and available. It was very good and worth the premium of market pricing. My gf ordered a few rolls and they looked pretty appetizing. All in all. Not the best sushi I've had...but not the worst either. If you have low expectations in sushi and service, then this place is for you! I've been to Edomasa twice and that was TWO TIMES TOO MANY. This place is your average, overpriced sushi spot. Even though the reviews were average, I noticed the menu had a bunch of traditional Japanese options that most sushi restaurants don't offer and had high expectations. The first time my boyfriend and I came here, we ordered the deluxe love boat. It came with 6 pieces of nigiri (Tuna, halibut, eel, and crab to name a few) and 2 pieces of gukan (ikura and uni), maybe 6 slices of sashimi, a pile of ikura, and a rainbow roll for ~$45?! The sashimi was decently fresh, but the type of fish it came with were all cheap. There was nothing deluxe about it besides the gukan. I was so disappointed. For the price, we could of had a more filling and satisfying meal anywhere else. The second time we came, we ordered the deluxe sushi and two rolls. Again, very cheap sushi that was NOT worth the price. The rolls seemed so average and I could tell the quality of the nori was not that great because it seemed soggy and stale. We left even more disappointed and felt so unsatisfied. Overall, we will NOT be coming back here. I have yet to try other sushi spots in Santa Barbara because after Edomasa, I feel like no where in SB will compare to the quality of sushi I've had in the Bay Area. read more

Nope. Just finished eating some take out from this place and it was incredibly disappointing. We ordered the dinner special, which includes choice of roll (California or spicy tuna), miso, salad, chicken teriyaki, tempura, and rice. We also ordered a Tokyo roll (yellow tail, avocado, and cucumber). The miso was good- very solid and standard miso. The salad was DRENCHED in dressing. It was basically ginger soup with some lettuce in it. Totally blah. The tempura was okay. The dipping sauce had no flavor. I had to add a bunch of soy sauce to make it work. The spicy tuna roll was okay. Not spicy at all. The chicken teriyaki lacked some serious flavor and the chicken didn't look fresh. The Tokyo roll was absolutely terrible. After one bite, I thew it away. First off, the yellowtail was cooked. Yes, cooked! There was NO indication of this on the menu. I'm a sushi lover and that's I thought I was getting. See photos. The yellowtail looked and tasted like StarKist tuna. Complete rip off. The food did come out fast, which was nice, but I would have preferred they spend more time making an enjoyable meal. There is something incredibly special about Edomasa. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the waitstaff is very nice. The chef's at the bar are wonderful and great at their craft. I love sitting in the far right corner of the bar for hours, dinning on tasty rolls and sashimi. I could literally spend an evening there just enjoying my guest and the amazing sushi that Edomasa has to offer. Its also great for big groups. The sushi comes out quickly and is beautifully prepared. I've been to every sushi place in Santa Barbara, and none keep me coming back like Edomasa. See you there! read more

Sushi cravings are an expensive liability for my wife and I. Luckily for us, there's Edomasa! The sushi here is awesome, and very reasonably priced. We can go all-out and leave feeling full for under $60. We always get the spicy edamame (steamed edamame covered in some hot chili garlic sauce) and some miso soup to start. One of my favorite add-on rolls is the Ginger Shrimp roll--it's got a crisp, fresh taste that's a fun contrast to the heavier rolls we usually get. On our most recent visit we had the flower roll, which was good, but I think we realized we generally like seaweed-wrapped rolls better. We also had the Crunch Roll, which has an amazing texture because of the Panko bread crumbs (but it is a bit of a splurge at $12.50). read more

This place was recommended to my dining partner by several people and I can see why. We tried a sampler that gave us 7 pieces of sushi with a spicy tuna roll, the Spider Roll, and the Flower Roll. The sushi pieces were pretty big. We cut them in half so that we could try everything. The spicy tuna roll was nice and fresh, while the spider roll had a good crunch. The Flower Roll was mediocre. Although it had eel, asparagus, avocado and crab, I mainly tasted the eel sauce and the rice. I will not get that one again. The service was pretty awesome. Best sushi place. Went here for dinner. Ordered the Roller sushi with 8 pieces of California and 6 pieces each of tuna and cucumber roll. It was such a good amount of sushi for a reasonable price. The edamame was yummy, and OMG the Eggplant appetizer tasted like a sugary donut it was the most amazing food I've ever had and the scallops were so delicious in their sauce as well. If you're looking for decent sushi at a decent price, this is one place to consider. A friend and I went to Edomasa for the first time tonight, and even though I've had various sushi rolls for many, many years, I'd never really tried sashimi until now. We split the sashimi appetizer. Not having had previous sashimi experiences to compare to, I can't say first-hand how it ranks, but it tasted great to me and my friend had nothing to complain about. We also split a Rainbow roll and Marina roll (crab, avocado, eel and cucumber) which were quite tasty, although I should have known better than to get to rolls that have the crab/mayonnaise mix (as I do not really like mayonnaise). The other rolls that were on the menu all also sounded really good, and I hope I have a chance to come back here and try more. We were there rather late in the evening, but the staff was quite friendly and helpful -- especially when our server discovered our table was uneven and rocking quite a bit and he immediately helped us move to an adjacent table. read more

Last week I would have given this place 4 or 5 stars but upon returning for a second visit I am not happy. First time here, I dined in. The food was pretty good and the service was as well, but it was also fairly empty as it was around 9pm. Despite the LACK OF AMBIANCE, and fact that MOST ROLLS ONLY HAVE 5 OR 6 PIECES, I left very eager to return. Second time, last night around 6pm, I wanted some take out and I thought I'd give this place another try over my regular place, Sushi Teri. BAD IDEA. It was absolutely packed, and there was really no area for me to stand and look at the menu to order takeout, I kept getting shuffled from one side of the room to the other. Then when the lady charged my card she "forgot" to tell me they add a 5% takeout charge...I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out where the extra $2.00 came from, they also added it BEFORE tax. Annoying considering I went here thinking it would be cheaper than my usual place, only to have it end up more. Now, my main issue...I found it a little odd that the majority of their roll selection was either with tempura inside and/or drenched in spicy/sweet sauce. I wanted some fresh fish and didn't feel like paying $13 for a rainbow roll. The one roll I got that was with tempura tasted fine. But, the second roll with fresh fish tasted kind of funny, like it wasn't fresh. I get the feeling they might hide behind the tempura and all the sauces to hide the fact that the fish isn't so fresh. I could have ignored that, and assumed it was just in my head, UNTIL being woken up this morning with the worst "stomach issues" I have had in a long time. It's possible it's just a coincidence but I kind of doubt it. Might return for dine-in, in the future if other people wanted to go, but I will stick to ordering my take-out from Sushi Teri. We walked in last night and waited for 15 minutes before someone asked if we had been helped. We said no, and that we were looking to dine in for 2. The woman scrambled around asking her coworkers if there was a waitlist. She then said it would be a 45 minute wait. There were 5 open seats at the bar. I asked if we could sit there and she said no, theres a party of 2 and a party of 3 on the waitlist. While we waited in line when we first got there, a party of 2 was sat at the bar without consulting a wait list. Then, a customer waiting for his takeout order went back and forth with a worker asking if he could sit at the bar and drink a beer. She initially said no because they had to keep the seats open for people walking in and ordering food. But then she let him sit there, while we were still standing waiting. Very interesting how all of a sudden when we want to dine in there is a wait list and the 5 open seats at the bar needed to be kept available. But when I called earlier they said no reservations. Where were those waiting parties? We were there for 15 minutes and there was only a larger party waiting for a table. We didn't argue we just accepted our defeat and left. As we walked out the woman laughed at us and said it's valentines day. Absolutely terrible customer service. read more

This place has decent sushi but it is a bit on the pricey side. The first thing to take note is that their rolls are normal roll prices ranging from 8-14 dollars but they only give you 5 pieces oppose to the normal 8 pieces, a bit disappointing. What did save this place is the oyko-don rice bowl for $8.95 . The bowl was quite generous and very delicious! I would definitely come back just for this bowl! The food break down: De la vine roll: its tempora yellow tail with shrimp. It was good had a nice crunch to it and the shrimp complimented the salmon but was only 5 pieces...--$11.95 Godzilla roll: marinated tuna and yellow tail. This roll was different never had a roll like thi before the marinated tuna and yellow tail had a sort peppery taste.. It was good but yah 5 pieces .. If i had to choose i think de la vine roll is better , this roll is a sort of acquired taste -- $8.95 Oyako don rice bowl: DELICIOUS!! Definitely recommonded this not only is the bowl pretty big, they give you a generous amount of rice and egg, chicken proportion an the rice is not dry it has the special sauce.. YUMM:) --$8.95 Green tea tempora ice cream: pretty decent ball and it was good js like any other green tea ice tempora ! The fish here is fresh, the special rolls are large, and the pricing is good for Santa Barbara. If those are your priorities, then give Edomasa a try! I give this place 4 stars because 1. The service is pretty slow, especially considering how simple the rolls are (in comparison to higher-end sushi bars like Arigato) 2. I'd say you should absolutely call in your orders ahead of time, but your call may never be answered (one time I called over 6 times in a 2 hour period) 3. All of their crab is imitation crab (minus the fried soft shell option) and 4. Their lobster roll is more mayonnaise than anything (Even my friend who loves mayonnaise couldn't finish his entire roll). I'd keep this all in mind when you're weighing your options! read more

If you're looking for late night dining, this is the place! This is where I first tried sushi at the sushi bar. It's a small and cozy environment, not pretentious at all. It's a nice place for a date, celebration or family fun! You will frequently see the owner there, working and overseeing his business! The restaurant is open until midnight and has an extensive menu with plenty of options for each member of the party! Big eaters can come early and get a Bento special, complete with ice cream...or come later and pay a little extra for it. The rolls are always delicious and huge. You can have a delicious soup, if that's what you are craving, or a nice piece of delicious salmon and rice. This is a wonderful option in Santa Barbara! Enjoy! read more

More like 2.5 but the mushroom miso soup bumped them up. The rolls here are very meh. The fish is 2 stars but I have to say that everything was very fast. Service was quick but our waiter was not the friendliest, seemed pretty annoyed and idk if he ever did smile.... Cheap prices but at least they match the quality of the food. Left satisfied and there was a lovely small older woman who helped us at the register, wish we could've gotten here. Will I come back? No. Would I recommend? This place is open late which is great. The staff is very nice. We had two waitresses because one was getting off shift and both were very welcoming. The food portions are pretty big. We ordered tempura starter and edamame and there was way too much food when our entrees came out. The food came out very quickly so we were only a few bites into our apps when the dinner showed up. The miso soup flavor was delicious, which is sort of my judge of how authentic I think the rest will be. I normally order sushi and am sad I didnt try, but let me tell you - the beef sukiyaki was so delicious. They give you a huge serving. I really wanted to finish, but it was just too much. read more

Sat at the sushi bar on a busy Saturday night. We attempted to use the little Japanese words we knew, and I think it worked - the food (and service) was great! The Rainbow Roll was on point - good temperature of the rice, nicely packed and good flavor on the varieties of fish. Chashu-men ramen was also flavorful with the pork (tonkatsu) broth and numerous additions like corn, sprouts, seaweed and egg. Lastly, the Japanese Pork Katsu Curry was huge, hot, and tasty. Tip: don't be boring and overtly American by getting a roll with cream cheese or something with the name "California" in it (you know what I'm talking about). I enjoy this place for the mere fact that it is opened so late. If you ever had a late night sushi craving then this is the place for you. Tons of students tend to flock here. I never had a bad experience, or have had friends with bad experiences. This place also gets very busy, so you might have to wait a bit. The parking can be a bit of a hassle though. If you plan on getting a side salad, its nice really a side salad, its massive! Fair warning. The tokyo roll, rainbow roll are very good choices. And you really almost rarely go wrong with the rainbow roll anywhere. Sashimi is nice and fresh, good edamame, miso soup, the beef bowl is very good and a good portion as well.... they have so many good things and SOOOO many choices its crazy. I had such amazingly high hopes for this place as my BFF just loves this place so much so that she bought the shirt! I ordered this buffalo roll that others have yelped about..imo it tasted like spicy cream cheese! I couldn't taste anything else but the cream cheese! The philly roll has the seaweed on the outside rather then on the inside, which I'm not a fan of. Service was not very good either! We were like looking around to get someone to come over and give us our bill. Also, the hubby ordered a side salad, which never came. boo Overall, I may come here again with my BFF, but there are so many other places to try that I don't think that I will be givin them a second chance anytime too soon. Ummm... we were in Santa Barbara for one night, and wanted to pick up some of our beloved Edomasa sushi, since we now live in LA and miss our former favorite SB sushi joint. And we called, and they were out of rice. At 9pm on a Friday night, when they open at 6pm and still had four more hours until they closed. Huh? Minus one star, but partly because you are so delicious, Edomasa, and at our once chance to have your delicious sushi again, you failed. :-( read more

We wanted some Japanese comfort food so for the first time we didn't order any of the sushi or sashimi. It's all yummy stuff. I ordered the house special broiled fish. You have a choice of 2 kinds of fish: Japanese mackerel and/or Pike fish. I chose one of each and it comes with a heaping bowl of rice , miso soup, cucumber/seaweed salad, and mochi ice cream. This was an excellent dish! It was just what I was craving and I never had to reach for extra seasoning, well except for the bottle of sriracha! the two types of fish were really balanced against each other, but you should know that they come with bones and all. The mackerel had less bones because it was just one side of the fish and was more tender and juicy. The pike fish was a whole fish, so it had a lot more bones, and it was more tuna tasting with firmer flesh. I absolutely loved both, but if you're not in the mood to pick a lot of bones out, then I would go with the mackerel. My company had the ginger pork, also under the house special category, so it came with the same extras that I had. When it came out we both gasped out loud at the sight of it, it was huge!! But turned out, it's a lot of bean sprouts underneath so it's manageable for one hungry person. I thought it was a little on the sweet side and I don't like sweet with savory flavors such as teriyaki. But if you don't mind, it's a nice change from the usual pork dishes they have. I had the pork ramen, the de la vina roll, and Santa Barbara roll. The ramen just tasted like ginger, The de la vina roll had too much sauce so it overpowered whatever flavor it was supposed to pack, and the Santa Barbara roll was decent. Overall, not worth the price on the ramen as it was mostly flavorless and packed with ginger. The rolls are definitely not worth the price as they are just big and filled with sauce and rice. Maybe I am just used to eating Asian food in LA, but I am definitely 100% sure that the prices in sb for Asian foods are generally not worth for what they are. How disappointing. This is a solid sushi restaurant which I believe is a little misunderstood. This place definitely deserves a higher rating! Edomasa excels with delivering mid-range simple sushi as eaten in Japan. This means their nigiri, sashimi, and hand rolls (shaped like ice cream cones) are very good, and the standard rice dishes like curry, pork cutlet, or the vegetable tempura rice bowl should be a few of your picks. "Sushi" as commonly known here in America, namely, california rolls, dragon rolls, tempura rolls, anything with elaborate toppings, fried, covered in many sauces, are American inventions to suit the American palate. Don't get me wrong, I love this type of sushi as well, but to come to Edomasa and expect American sushi is a bit of a faux pas. Of course, it appears Edomasa does have American style sushi on the menu likely because of the demand, but I highly recommend you try what they are best at - Japanese sushi. I tried the Ladies' Set with 3 different hand rolls, the Sushi Assortment with 7 pieces of nigiri and a cali or spicy tuna roll (I always lean spicy tuna given the choice!) and the Pork Cutlet (tonkatsu). My husband and I have been dining here since 2005, and it was a special treat to get takeout for our anniversary. Edomasa, we love you and want you to stick around, so please, please pay attention. Our takeout meal was bad from start to finish. The person on the phone was rude, short, and after reconfirming THREE times over the phone and TWICE in person, you still got part of our order wrong. Of what did arrive correct, it was not good. The "sushi rice" warm, seemingly ordinary, re-heated, soggy rice, and some rolls were falling apart in the container. Even the takeout containers themselves were cheap, hasty, floppy and definitely not appropriate for Miso soup, which exploded upon prying off the lid. The only redeeming thing about the meal was the quality of the fish, which was good. read more
