3.5, rounded up 'cause many of the ladies working there did ask if I needed help!…read more Contrary to the name of the place, this is more of a European grocery store rather than a bakery. It was like a smaller, family-owned version of a Starsky's. There are waaay more groceries like bottled sauces, canned goods, deli counter, than breads. A good portion of the breads don't seem to be baked there. Got a coupla paczki and they were ok, $1.75ea, not super fresh tasting, but not stale or anything. Double Smoked Kielbasa was good. Other than breaded cutlets, I didn't see prepared foods, but then again I wasn't really looking! If you're from a bigger city with access to such European grocery stores, St Joseph "Bakery" won't be a standout.

+ Lots of Polish/European Meats, Friendly Service, Reasonable Prices…read more- Some items, like the bagged Pizza and Breads, are not priced Walked in here on a weekday at 1:00pm and it was pretty busy--lots of people ordering sandwiches. An assorted sub is $5.75. I ordered some wood smoked kielbasa, kabanosy, and hot pepperettes. All were very reasonably priced and tasted fantastic. They have lots of polish goods and other european items. It's a pretty big place. They have a freezer area with frozen meat on a stick, cabbage rolls, and perogies. Towards the far right of the store are loaves of breads and rolls in bags. I'm not sure why, but none of these items have prices on them. We did buy a few loaves of italian and french bread, they were $2.20 a piece. Again, very reasonable. Everyone in here was super friendly and they speak polish too. I will be back for more deli meats and to try a sub!

I did really enjoy breakfast at the café--it was absolutely delicious, although the menu was on the smaller side. I was expecting the bakehouse to be larger with a lot more options, but there were only about six different items available. I ordered two raspberry bars, two oatmeal chocolate chip cookie bars, and two peanut butter bars to bring home and freeze. Unfortunately, when I got home, I realized I was given a caramel bar instead of one of the oatmeal bars. The oatmeal bar was actually the one I was most excited to try, and I don't like caramel, so I was pretty disappointed. Overall, the breakfast was delicious, but the bakehouse experience didn't quite live up to the expectations I had going in.

I debated about giving four stars and not five is because if you go in the later afternoon (after 3:00) they are often out of what you want, especially buns which I'm sure are In high demand! But really, I'm sure this is a sign of quality. Also they make really great pies. And I agree with the below "sawdust" comment! There's a good amount of street parking here but pay attention to the signs as there are areas you can't park in between the spots you can park. I hopped in and the place was packed. I had a look into the display case, asked about some pastries as it was late in the day and they were closing soon. They recommended a pear one as it was always nice since some of the other fruits can be more tart in the winter. I settled on that and a latte. I swear it was around $6-7 which I don't think I can even get a latte for that in Ottawa. They had my pastry wrapped in no time. I was a bit nosy and popped my head into this doorway as most of the seats were taken to see if there was more seating there. It turns out that it's another part of the shop. It serves gelato and I assume it's seasonal. I'll be back to check it out in the summer. By the time I returned, my latte was ready and I was heading out the door. I had a sip of the latte and it was nice. The pastry was also a really good recommendation. I'll return to try some other things in the future.
