It was my babies 1st birthday this past weekend. I was going to make his birthday cake so I did a trail run and it was a pretty decent looking cake! I then decided for this very special occasion I would just splurge and go ALL OUT so my baby could have an AMAZING 3 tiered cake instead. Something spectacular! I called around and resorted to a well known bakery in town so I would have confidence the cake would look great! I placed my order over the phone thinking that it would cost around $80 or so but they quoted me $120. After a long time contemplating, I decided this was such a special day for my baby that I would do it. I called back to go over my order again emphasizing that I could easily buy a cheaper birthday cake elsewhere or make one for pennies, but I was choosing them because, as I mentioned, I wanted it to be a memorable cake. I was forking out A LOT of money for this. A few weeks before the party I physically went into the store to go over what I wanted once again, just to be sure we were on the same page. I stated for the 3rd time that I want the "wow factor". Not just an ordinary cake that I could make. The employee wrote it right across the order form. A few days before the party I called them once again to go over my request for an over the top cake as per the price I was paying. They confirmed my request again stating it would be amazing.
On the morning of the party, my husband went and picked up the cake and brought it home. He stated I think we got the wrong cake (?). I looked at it and I was almost in tears. The cake I had made looked better than this one. I couldn't believe the money I had just spent on this cake. I am not saying it was "ugly"! I want to emphasize that what I am saying is that it was NO WHERE NEAR A $120 CAKE!
The only thing I put all my money to for the party was wrecked. Here I was with a party starting in 1 hour and an average cake that cost me an arm and a leg. To be honest, I wouldn't have minded receiving this cake for the price of $60-$80. But NO WAY IN THIS WORLD was this cake worth $120.
In any event, when my guests came over they all asked if I had made the cake, again confirming that this cake was less than satisfactory. I was beyond disappointed as this was to be the main focus at the party. I had 47 guests at the party and when I told them I bought the cake and paid what I did, they were in disbelief and insisted I contact the business and express my dissatisfaction. As such I called after the party and they said the manager was not in but that she would be back in on Monday. I provided my contact information and requested she call me back. That never happened. Four days later I still hadn't received a call back so I called them before they closed. I got a hold of the supervisor/manager. She told me her name but I didn't catch it so I asked her for her name again and she refused to tell me what it was. I asked her why she wouldn't tell me her name and she just said rudely that she's not going to give it to me! I couldn't believe my ears. I went ahead and expressed my concerns. Then she butted in and said "let me talk! You wont let me talk!" I told her I was calling her to express my concerns so that is why I was speaking. She was impolite to say the least. I explained that in my opinion, as well as numerous other people, with no personal interest in the matter, the product I received was NOT worth $120 or anything relatively close to that. She said she knew I was a picky person because "we were talking about you behind the counter after you came in to confirm your order". I stated "you were talking about me stating I was picky?! Of course I am picky! I am paying good money for a cake for a very special occasion!" I couldn't believe my ears. She said she "knew" i was not satisfied with the cake even before I ordered it! I told her I was extremely happy with the order I placed after going over it 3 times with her employees and asked her where she got this information from. She said her employees told her that I was not going to be happy with the cake and they were talking about me after I spoke with them. I asked her: well if that was the case, why then wouldn't you advise ME of your concerns before proceeding to take my money knowing full well you could not fulfill my requests/wishes?! She had no response. I said look, all I am calling for is to express my dissatisfaction with the quality of the cake for the money I spent on it THAT's ALL. You can keep all my money, just know I was not pleased. She says fine what do you want then. I said, well knowing I didn't pay an arm and a leg for a mediocre cake would be nice. She said the base price for the 3 tiered cake is $90. I said then Id take $30 back and be satisfied. She changed her mind and said actually NO, she was not going to refund me a small amount of money.
