I had no idea where we were going but was just instructed to pack a swimsuit, comfy clothes (aka no "going out clothes") and some bug spray. Now, people who know me (especially my hubbie), knows I am not a fan of the outdoors nor do I like camping. It was a non-negotiable for me that I will never go camping with him. So, when I heard "bug spray", I was on high alert. As we continue our drive away from Chicago, I'm trying to get my bearings on which direction we're headed...nope, not Wisconsin, nope, not Purdue (where we graduated), but north after the Indiana border...aha! Michigan! However, that still did not help me figure out what we were going to do for our anniversary. At first, I thought, oh by the lake...then we drove inland...ehhh...that's when he lost me. For the life of me, I could not Sherlock Holmes my way into solving the mystery. A few hours later, we arrive at a building and met Mark, the "concierge". With his Australian accent, I half expected to see a kangaroo on this trip. However, we follow him on a dirt road and get to a gate that opens from the side with a sign saying "Meemo's Farm Game Preserve & Retreat" and I literally thought "Jurassic Park"! Aaaaaaaaaaaaah! I couldn't believe he was taking me camping. Then, as we continued through the road, passing trees, some creeks, more trees, we drive up to a log cabin and can see a lake in front of it. My first thought was "At least it wasn't a tent, but...we drove 5 hours to stay in a 1-room Lincoln Log House?" Mark opens the door...and I swear I am on "MTV Cribs"! We walk upon a threshold to the "Great Room" - complete with HUGE flat screen TV, leather sectional, dining room with an antler chandelier, and a state-of-the-art kitchen in a rustic log cabin house design. Then we go to the bottom floor that leads east and west - one towards the gym and the other to another kitchen, poker table, and....a 2-lane bowling alley!! It was indeed not a 1-room cabin, but a 3-bedroom, 4-bath luxury lodge complete with a hot tub on the top deck, comfy patio furniture, a fire pit, and a grill. Also, several great touches like towel warmers and heated floors in the bathrooms! We spent 3 days in this luxury retreat called "The Lanes" using the hot tub, bowling alley, gym, walking the woods, and basically resting and relaxing. This property sits on ~1,300 acres with several other cottages and has several activities including hunting, skeet shooting, ATV, horseback riding, etc. I now have fond memories of "glamping" in Michigan and look forward to our next visit! We'll bring more folks with us next time! Thank you, Meemo's Farm, and my hubbie for a wonderful anniversary weekend!

Today I was out looking at prospective houses to buy on Wolf Lake. Decided to stop and take a quick…read moredip in the lake to cool off before heading back out. As I was just wading in the water at the public access next to Wolf Lake Motel and Resort I saw and heard a lady in blue swim shorts and a blue flower and white swim top yelling at some very young children. Not asking but yelling at them to stop running in the pier. Then asked another very young boy who out of these kids are staying here. The boy couldn't have been no more then 8 years old. A little girl in the water said I am staying here in room #2 and these are my cousins whom are visiting. The lady ended up being the owner of that establishment. She starting yelling at the children on the dock and the water telling them in a VERY NASTY way that if they are not paying to stay here they cannot swim there or be on the dock. That was for paying customers only. Then proceeded to tell these children ages 8 years old and younger to get out of the water and get off her property now. Then the said owner proceeds back to the picnic table she was at and was telling ALL the people on the shore about these poor children. The father came out on the dock to get the children and the owner was yelling at him telling him to get off her property in front the entire beach front and the children. I was APPALLED and felt horrible for these kids whom only wanted to play in the water on a holiday weekend and they were NOT doing anything wrong. That includes running. I will NEVER stay at a motel that didn't even look that good to begin with that cannot respect family or very young children. Truly disgusted!!!!

If it was me, I would do a few things: get a larger ice cooler (or a second one), invest in wifi/cable that works better, and add some more potties. There are a lot of people with not many bathrooms. Otherwise no complaints, see you next year.

It was furnished with so many cool, thrifted knickknacks, paint-by-number paintings, out-of-print books, old games and -- the best part -- a VCR with VHS tapes! Yes, people. You, too, can curl up on the vintage leather couch and watch a VHS of 1997's hit war romance Life is Beautiful (or Rocky III or 39 Steps, or one of the other two dozen tapes available in the cabin). Everywhere we looked as we explored the cabin, there was something new to see and be delighted by. The Cadillac is the largest cabin at this vacation cabin property. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a fully furnished kitchen with a gas range, farmhouse sink, new "vintage" refrigerator and a pour-over coffee maker with local coffee. It also has a large dining table, vintage leather couch and recliner to curl up in while watching that VHS movie of your choice. Or if you're not into old-school media, there's also Roku on the smart TV. Children will be delighted by the special kids nook that has been created just for them, which includes classic books and games, and a vintage record player with kids records. It turns out that all of the cabins, not just The Cadillac, are decorated with their own unique vintage furniture and knickknacks. There are 10 cabins on the property. Outside, guests are invited to enjoy a community fire pit and lawn games. There's also a covered shed with firewood that you can purchase for a few dollars. (You pay on the honor system by slipping some cash into a slot.) The cabins are located less than four miles away from downtown Cadillac. There is no one on site at the property, so you work with the owner via email to set up your stay. They will give you the combination to get into your cabin, and if you have any problems, they're only a phone call/text away. It was a very low-key, relaxing stay. I 100% recommend staying at Mackinaw Timbers if you want a unique lodging experience in the Cadillac area.

I will say to bring a box fan if you can because the cabin gets quite warm at night, and bring your own towels. All in all, we had a great time. We will definitely be returning!

We were greeted with the utmost respect from the second we called, to pulling into the parking lot, getting help onto the river, and getting off. It was one of the prettiest parts of the river that we have seen, very wide open. Pulling into the campground from the river, allowed us to experience their adorable establishment. I truly can't wait to go back and camp next time. I won't say any names but we tried the same experience the day before at a close establishment. It was horrible, a long walk with no help, cash only, and a $80.00 cash deposit. The owner was very disrespectful also.
