I followed up with him this summer because of needing surgery for bunions and hallux rigidus (stiff big toes which would not bend up-and caused me pain and difficulty walking.) I had my first surgery mid September to get rid of the dorsal bunion and have a MTP joint implant put in. Fabulous results. Now I'm waiting for my right foot to have the same surgery. Walking is already much easier. Regarding the other negative posts orthotics are necessary to control abnormal foot and ankle alignment and biomechanics for walking. Plantar Fascitis is painful but can be helped by a multi-pronged approach including physical therapy, meds, weight loss if needed, proper shoewear. I have not been to this office in years and when I left, I was accidentally overcharged and had a credit on my account (I still have the statement from 2 years ago saying there is a credit on my account). Yesterday I received an old bill in the mail dated back to 3 years ago claiming I owe them hundreds of dollars today. They didn't care that I had a claim statement showing a credit to my account postmarked after the date on this "new statement". I even called my old insurance, but couldn't get any proof of this bill. The management of their billing is outrageous and will try to scam you. They admitted that their old billing was done incorrectly, yet now they are hunting down old patients and forcing them to pay new charges that were never shown before. I wish I could go back in time - I would've found a different doctor instead.

Here is my predicament. I hurt my foot during the weekend. At the time I thought I would need medical help, so around 5PM May 12, Monday, I called this office and made an appointment. They gave a 12PM appointment the next day, Tuesday, May 13. Note that this is within their 24 hour window of cancelation. There was no communications from their office regarding a cancelation fee. If I knew, I would not proceed with one. I don't want to be financially trapped like that. The next morning, Tuesday May 13, I knew I couldn't come, so I called and asked to cancel the appointment. To my surprise, they told me I cannot cancel it because it was within their 24 hour window. I was not told about this fee when the appointment was given. They told me I either had to reschedule or pay that fee. Facing with no other options, I thought I might need to be seen, I rescheduled to Friday May 16, 9:15 appointment. Over the next day, my foot improved, there was no more pain, and no swelling. So I called this office on Wednesday to cancel the appointment. Note that this is way before their 24 hour cancelation window. They said I cannot cancel it, if I do, I will be imposed a fee of $50. THIS IS ANOTHER WAY OF TELLING ME THAT I HAVE TO SEE THEIR DOCTOR WHEN I NO LONGER NEED MEDICAL CARE. THIS IS VERY UNFAIR PRACTICE AND AMOUNTS TO SCAM. Fifty dollar is not a big amount but principal is principal. They cannot just charge people if they like. People pay when service is rendered. I received no service. As a matter of fact, with the first appointment, I was given no chance to cancel my appointment because they did not inform me of this potential fee and the appointment was give within their 24 hour. The second appointment was effectively forced on me. I still tried to obey their so-called 'policy' by contacting them as soon as I can to cancel. Now they don't honor their own policy and told me they will send me a bill for that fee. I will refer this matter to the New Jersey Ministry of Consumer Affair for investigation of my complaint.

We returned to Dr. Hale after my mother underwent a second back surgery that left her in severe…read morepain and struggling to walk. Because he had done her original fusion and had such a strong reputation, we trusted him to give us an honest assessment. I brought her most recent CT and MRI scans, along with lab results showing a GFR of 17--the morning of that second surgery--indicating she was not an appropriate surgical candidate at the time. I also presented the report showing that a Coflex device had been used directly above a prior fusion, something that multiple sources list as contraindicated. Dr. Hale spent only a few minutes with her, glanced at the scans, and said everything looked fine. He offered no comment on the labs or the contraindicated device and simply recommended outpatient therapy. After her condition rapidly declined, we sought a second opinion from a top spinal surgeon at HSS, who reviewed the same imaging and said she was in urgent need of surgical intervention at that time. Unfortunately, by then it was too late. My mother is now wheelchair-bound, on dialysis three times a week, and unlikely to survive more than six months. She will live out what time she has left in pain--and in torment--knowing that those she once trusted to protect her instead looked the other way. From where I sit, it seems doctors protect their own, even when a patient's life is on the line.
