If I could give this place a negative zero, I would! This was the worst "hotel" my family and I have ever stayed in. The front desk clerk, Dan, was not friendly upon our arrival and had a terrible attitude. But that was only part of the issue. He put our family of 3 in the worst possible room with full-sized beds! My husband and I had a terrible night trying to share a full-sized bed! On top of that, though they had a thermostat on the wall, I think it was just for show because it was not connected. So, we had to turn on the wall heater that was extremely noisy every time it kicked in. The hair dryer did not work, and there were holes in the towels! We barely slept, and because the office closes at 10 pm, we had no choice but to deal with it in the morning! I went to the office in the morning, and I politely and calmly mentioned all the above issues. The clerk first argued with me that our beds were not full-sized beds but were queen-sized! Then, as I mentioned each issue, he did not apologize but just shook his head as if it were my fault for the issues! After 5 minutes of this ridiculous back and forth, I requested a room change or refund. He said he would see what he could do. Five minutes later, he called and apologized to let me know the beds were indeed full-size, not queens! He moved us to another room with queen beds for the next night. So, the problems continued in this room! I wanted some coffee for my sugar, which was provided in the room. However, the bag of sugar I selected had obviously been bitten into by a dog and not replaced! The curtains were torn, probably by a dog. Worst of all, when using the microwave, it started arcing! And we still had another night booked! We decided to leave early, and I planned on calling his manager upon our return. This also turned out to be a 2-day nightmare. Since it is through Choice Hotels, the AI message kept routing me back to the front desk clerk!!! I was able to finally reach a person who took my information and gave me a case#. They provided me with the General Manager's name and email, and I will be emailing him about these issues. Terrible customer service and a terrible place to stay! We only stayed here for one night, but we had no issues. I had reserved the room months ago as we were attending a Loreena McKennitt concert in Portland and didn't want to pay three times the rate for a hotel there. They had the reservation no problem and we were charged the same amount agreed to at the time of reservation. The clerk was helpful and friendly. I asked for a first floor room and it was no problem. The room was fine. Clean as far as I noticed with my lack of obsession with cleanliness. The beds were comfortable and the microwave serviceable once I finally settled the plate onto the revolving arms properly. The breakfast offerings are a typical continental variety of fruit, yogurt, cereal, breads and, well, boiled eggs. But I give them credit; some hotels never started up breakfast suspended during the worst of Covid-19. The heating unit was a little loud, as they tend to be. We didn't use the fridge or television. The room is fine - typical for this class of hotel. It was clean and had everything we needed. However, the guy working the front desk at 5:30pm on Thursday, August 15, 2024 is both insulting and an idiot. Not sure if he treats everyone like they're stupid or just women but he doesn't seem to understand why it's not okay for the hotel to force a guest to run their card again when they have already submitted a card AS PAYMENT in the online booking system. This is SHADY. There is no reason to have to give your card information at the hotel when that information was already captured online. The fact that they are forcing guests to enter the same information again in a point-of-sale system on site is super suspicious and opens the guest up to the possible theft of their credit card information. read more

Booked through Expedia, for the price it is great. Comfortable and decently clean, nothing really to complain about for the price, outdated blankets. No bed bugs! No cigarette smell. I understand Econo Lodge is not the Taj Mahal. I really get it. I'm used to staying in lower end motel/hotels...BUT as a former housekeeper that worked on Hampton Beach NH (in a popular low end resort) I expected better accommodations even for a low-end motel. First of all, when we walked in, the microwave wasn't plugged in! To heat up our food I had to pull the microwave up and out to plug in next to the lamp. Oh, and the remote control didn't work. ‍ Next, I noticed while my 3 year old was being 3 and throwing stuff everywhere--toddler parents im sure you get it--my son took the cushion off the chair. Thank God he did--I noticed what looks like possibly blood stains on the cushion. Isn't that a health hazard??! Next when I took a shower, I noticed hair--not my hair or any of my family's hair--somebody else's hair--on the shower wall. I'm a tad bit skeeved out and I will be reporting all of this to Choice Hotels. And to confirm Alyssa's previous statement--the Wifi, which has 3 different connections---were all spotty at best. If you can deal with all this hoopla for one night for under $100, then this is the place for you. For Metro Portland you won't find a place cheaper than this. But staff here needs to step their game up on the Cleanliness factor. If I could give this place a half a star I would. PS: Their breakfast options were mediocre at best. The rooms are newly renovated and was very clean when we stayed there! We booked on hotels.com and the room looked exactly like the photos online. Customer service was good. No one disturbed us while we were there and we couldn't hear the highway at all so the soundproofing was very good. The bathroom was cleaned well and definitely smelled like it was recently cleaned. The complementary breakfast was pretty average. There was a very small selection of food and there was no meat/eggs served. But, the waffle maker made up for it. read more

We needed a place to stay for a quick overnight trip and found that most of the places in Brunswick and Freeport were either booked or pretty expensive. Normally, we'll pay more to stay at a nicer place, but for a trip that was only going to last 16 hours, we decided to go the inexpensive route. Based on the low price and some of the reviews, we started to second guess our decision, but decided to roll the dice and give it a try. I'm glad we did because we were pleasantly surprised by this place. The room was very clean, far more spacious than we imagined, and the decor was fairly contemporary. The staff working at the front desk (both at check in and check out) were very pleasant and helpful. Make no mistake; this is very much a no-frills motel, so if you are looking for the Ritz-Carlton, this might not be the place for you. That said, if you are just looking for an inexpensive place to stay for a night that is clean and comfortable, I would highly recommend staying at the Econo Lodge in Freeport. read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did. We pulled up late on a Friday to begin our 7 day stay and checked in with Clare. She was so sweet and checked me in very quickly. We got to the room and found that we had a freshly remodeled room and settled in for the night. Fast forward to the next morning, we received a knock on the door from housekeeping around 9:30 am, which put our dog on high alert. There was no "do not disturb" sign included in the room for us to put out. After turning them away, I received a call from a very rude man at the front desk. He told me that the housekeeper alerted him that we had an unauthorized dog and that we were not in a pet friendly room and that he'd have to move us. I had just finished up paying $20 per night for my dog and cat the night before with Clare, so I knew we were in the clear. He proceeded to interrogate me, and only after I told him who had checked us in did he back off, as Clare is the manager. I went into the office about an hour later to find that Clare was back, I told her about the run in and she profusely apologized and gave us a do not disturb sign. After that, whenever I'd go into the lobby to grab coffee or breakfast, I would say "good morning" to the same gruff fella I talked to on the phone on day one, only to be ignored completely. When I accidentally demagnetized my key on the 3rd day, I went in only to get the same rude service from him as I expected. He then proceeded to tell me that with the incoming nor'easter, he sure wasn't coming into work and someone else would just have to cover. And he'd have to sacrifice his weekend to make up for it. Great job looking out for your teammates, dude. Learn some customer service and teamwork skills. For the price, there are other hotels in town that better deserve your business. We moved down to the Best Western after that week as we waited for our new home. It was the same price and didn't involve any of the hassle we dealt with at the Econo Lodge. read more

Checked into our room and immediately noticed the sticky bathroom floor and gnats in the sink. Then went to put some drinks into our refridgerator that had someone elses leftover food in it. Gross! The continental breakfast was a few pieces of bread, a stray bagel and barely fresh cereal. The staff indifferent and rude. Classic case of you get what you paid for. Not accommodating or helpful at all. The staff was rude and inconsiderate when I asked for assistance with amenities described as "available upon request." Instead of helping to mitigate the issue when these items were not in fact available, I was met with what can only be described as a blatant disregard for customer service. Rather than help to solve a simple issue by, for example, swapping rooms as we had just checked in 5 minutes prior, the staff instead brushed us off, offered short and impolite responses to our questions, and sent us out the door. If you're going to work front of house at any establishment, it should go without saying that you treat your customers with kindness and respect not shove them out the door because you aren't in the mood to do your job. On top of all this, the room we got put in was not even fully cleaned. Found trash under the bed and the cleanliness of the sheets were questionable at best. Spotty WiFi. Found this place through AAA and it allows pets. Room was quite spacious. They have breakfast for you (hot chocolate, muffins, apples, pancakes, etc) and free internet. Only issue with the room was that there wasn't enough electrical outlets =P The sink is outside of the bathtub, so that's useful if your on time constraints. I was really disappointed in this Hotel. Paint is peeling and the Exterior needs a real going over. The Lobby was filled with an overwhelming smoke smell. The lady checking in was nice but all business, no warmth. Didn't really look at me. My room had a very old smoke smell, as though it was in the fabrics and rug from long ago. The cover on my bed was slightly ripped. Breakfast is in an area adjoining the Lobby: very crowded and bad 'traffic' planning - you kept having to excuse yourself to get around people to get to the food. Mostly breads and sugars. They did have hard boiled eggs and kept running out of them. Chairs and tables very crowded together. Just could be better planned and laid out. We've stayed in this Econo Lodge at least a dozen times. We stay here on the way up and back from NY to Acadia National Park. It's always clean and comfortable, the staff is always friendly and there have never been any issues. The beds are super comfortable and the hotel is dog friendly. We've stayed in plenty of other hotels in the area and all have been nice but for the price, this Econo Lodge is the best value. It's close to the shopping in Freeport, about a 3 minute drive, and a quick 20 minute drive into Portland. If you're not looking to hang out at your hotel this is the perfect place to stay. This doesn't go for all Econo Lodges, check reviews carefully as some others have long term residents. Whether your designation is Portland, Freeport or eventually MDI, this is a perfect place to stay or lay over for a night. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with my stay. LOTS of outlets and trash cans in the room. It was clean and ready when we arrived and was a decent size. I booked this hotel not realizing that I got a smoking room. The woman at the front desk told us that there were no other rooms available. Considering it was a smoking room the odor was manageable. The room was very clean. I love that the hotels location is only about a five minute drive from the outlets. I recently stayed at the Econo Lodge on Route 1 Freeport,Maine.I found the Room that I was initially assigned to was dirty and smelled of urine.I returned to the Front Desk and was assigned another room.That room smelled of mildew,with flies and Mosquitos.The furniture was all old ,dirty and in need of repair.Of the two Lamps,only one bedside lamp was functional.The entire Lodge looked as if it should be closed for renovation. In addition to the poor condition,The Staff,especially the Clerk at the Front Desk was Inappropriate and offensive .When,I inquired about a Manager,I was informed that,the Lodge did not have a Manager.As,I spoke to Kevin the Clerk at the Front Desk about,What I perceived to be an inappropriate comment,Another Employee who did not identify himself intruded in the conversation .And made some disparaging remark. The young lady at the desk was wonderful. She not only greeted us with a smile, which for the late hour was a treat, usually you don't get that kind of service after midnight at most hotels. I have read other reviews on this hotel, the one thing I can tell everyone, is that this is an Econo Lodge.....emphasis on Econo. Thus, you don't get all the frills and such. Admittedly the room needs to be updated, fresh paint, new rugs, new bathtubs would do wonders. However, for a place to lay your head..it was decent. Yes, it was pricey to stay there, but seriously people, it is Freeport, in the summer time, what do you expect? Go to any tourist town and you will find over priced hotels everywhere you look. If you don't want to pay the price, don't come in the summer, end of story. Breakfast was quite expansive for an Econo Lodge, I expected less and was pleasantly surprised at having more. The young lady that checked us in was also there in the morning when we came down to breakfast. She greeted us with the same friendly smile, and her interaction with the guests made it feel more like we were in Cheers, then an Econo Lodge. They hit the jack pot with this employee! I am giving this hotel five stars just because we felt at home in the hotel, which is all due to the excellent customer service by that young lady. read more
