One of the worst decisions of my life as a homeowner was hiring this company. After getting several quotes we had Ecograss install turf in our front and back yards. The first issue came up when a couple months after installation a giant hole formed in the backyard. I was told this happens and it's not their responsibility. They offered to fix it for a fee, and I had to threaten to cal the BBB on them to get them to do the right thing and fix it. If that was all that happened I would probably have given them 4 stars. We also have a huge Chinese Elm tree in our yard that's around 60 years old and was in good health when the turf went in 2 years ago. It suddenly turned brown and an arborist just told me it was dead. He said there were a combination of factors including improper irrigation, but the big culprit was the turf. He said the turf was heavier duty than he usually sees and despite being sold to me as extra permeable for pets, it was so thick that it essentially suffocated the tree. In addition the grading and compacting likely damaged the roots. Ecograss recommended having the turf go all the way to the trunk for aesthetics, and that certainly didn't help. Now my only chance to save the tree (like a 1% chance) is to rip out all the turf and hope that the tree can recover from being smothered, but most likely I'll have to pay many thousands of dollars to remove this beautiful tree that should have lived another 60 years if not for Ecograss. read more

EcoGrass offered a friendly same day free estimate for which I later wanted to add the parkway to. The turf samples were very helpful to see and leave out in the sun for a while. I could feel that they do not retain heat like people have said which probably goes for the low end product. EcoGrass only uses high quality made in USA turf. There are very long nails used in the install and one struck an irrigation pipe which was not found until a few days later. I called EcoGrass and they had a team out to fix it that same day. We have a large, irregular backyard in Santa Monica that had a bunch of problems: 1. Sloped toward the house, causing the foundation to get flooded with any rain or watering. 2. 500/month water bills 3. Constant yellowing of grass with weeds and clovers despite heavy maintenance. 4. First, Michael is honest and responsive and professional. He is not a salesman but rather an aficionado of turf. He carries the TOP products (which we compared side by side to all the others!!!) that are heavy weight, made in USA, look real, don't use dangerous chemicals and ground rubber, drain water well, and use the very fancy infill that makes it look nice forever. They came on time and their work was exceptionally fast and professional. And looked like it was custom made for our home. Insane!!! They left the area impeccably clean as well! Fourth, when they realized that the tree remover failed to the stump properly, they didn't allow it to slow them down! They instead simply rented a stump grinder, came back the next morning, ground the stump and proceeded without any delay to our project. They charged us only a minor amount for this additional work. About what you'd expect. They didn't do anything egregious, it's just not what I wanted. This was for a 1,000sqft lawn replacement. My experience was as follows: 1. The gentleman showed up and was very amenable. He articulated what I wanted in writing. 2. That is: removal of existing lawn and some serious leveling and filling in of dirt from point A to point B. There were many ridges and craters. 3. What I got: Light excavation of old lawn, some pretty good tilling, and covering of the area with a 50/50 mix. Sod installation followed. 4. After a few weeks, the sod settled. The valley between points A and B persists. The ridges and bumps are still there. 5. Also, there was confusion about laying 18 flagstones. Those were discussed verbally and sent in a crude graphic I composed as an addendum. I admit the flagstones were not in the electronic estimate I agreed to. The gentleman sent a text stating it was the first he was hearing of it and that there were "26 of them". I offered to install them myself. The crew ultimately did install them. 6. The crew on the first day borrowed my tools. They broke a sprinkler and then buried it. The next day I excavated the site, stuck some stakes in the ground to mark it, and the crew (a different crew) repaired it. 7. Benderboard for three planters was discussed verbally, marked in my addendum, and was present in the written agreement--there was even a line item of $180 for it. It came as a surprise to the crew when I asked about it. They resolved the communication gap between office and crew. My benderboard was installed. It looks nice too. 8. I work from home. I don't do anything fancy. The doorbell rang. The crew needed to borrow some cutlery. 9. I received a past due notice for the bill a day after the job was complete. I sent a check through the mail. 10. After about 10 days (they were patient), the check had not yet arrived. I canceled it. It cost $20 to cancel. The check arrived at their office the next day. 11. They had my name wrong on all written communication from start to finish, both first and last name. I did not correct them. In fact, I may change my name to Mr. Burro. 12. They did the job quickly. There wasn't a lot of waiting around. They just went right to work. No complaints about scheduling. Overall the new lawn doesn't look bad, it's just not entirely what I wanted. I have my doubts as to the actual depth of excavation based on the material removed and hauled away. Same applies to the amount of material brought in. They may say differently. I brought it up but pressed it no further. It probably doesn't make a difference anyway. We agreed on 2-3 inches of removal, and even if they did that, the weed root system lives a few more inches below. Nutsedge has already sprouted. read more
