One of 6 bioluminescent bays in the world. Very unique experience. We got there early, so we were checked in before the last minute guests arrived & lines got long. Be prepared to get wet. You'll walk out to the boat (thigh high water). And think carefully about how you split up your group (2 per boat - strongest in the back). There is a lot of rowing and maneuvering around the mangroves. Once in the mangroves it was truly unique experience. Nahhhh this not it. I booked the 645 tour but arrived at 651. I called ahead and they accommodated by pushing us back to the the 845 tour. Although extremely grateful I figured since we would go on the later tour we would be able to see the bioluminescent better. Yalllllll!!!! First off I have been on alot of excursions and this had to be the worst. The tour guide acted like he was ready to go. Unfortunately, no glow. Understanding that nature does its own thing on nature's time it was very disappointing. It seemed that many companies are capitalizing on the concept knowing that the glow isn't there. The guides were great. We went on the Eco Action Tour night kayaking experience with my fiancé, my sister, and my sister-in-law -- and it ended up being one of the absolute highlights of our Puerto Rico trip! Watching the fluorescent plankton glow in the water was pure magic -- something we'll never forget. Our two tour guides were amazing -- super friendly and helpful. The main guide, Michael, was hilarious and made the whole experience even more fun. I have done Bioluminescent kayak tour with another company and I have to say this experience with eco was far better! Not only was our group more organized than other groups there were no casualties or issues because there were 6 or 7 guides for 20 people. So there was constant assistance. Seeing the bioluminescence is dependent on how dark it is. I did the 7p one and the moon and starts were out plus city lights so they offered a tarp that everyone had to hold over and crouch in to block out light. This is the first time I ever had to do that and we did get to see the light this way. I also loved that they explained the organism and fish with pictures and everything something I didn't experience on my last kayak with the other company. I strongly recommend going during a new moon so it's darker. It's 1.5 miles of kayaking to open bay and 1.5 back. Keep in mind it won't look like pictures but it's worth the experience and the crew had a great sense of humor and overall highly recommend. read more

If you want big sparkly lights you are not going to get it unless conditions are perfect. You need no moon and no rain in the week before the tour. In addition, climate change has definitely affected the number of dinoflagellates in the water. That's not a reason to skip the tour. We were a group of about 20 with 4 guides. My friend and I, who are very experienced kayaker, stayed to the back of the line and let all of the novices go first. When the guide put the spotlight on it looked like a group of summer campers on their first kayak trip. We had a nice slow paddle through the mangroves and into Laguna Grande. We did the bioluminescent thing, they talked about what the dinoflagellates were and we put a tarp over our heads so it was really dark. After that they took the tarp away and talked about the stars. They were amazing, so many stars. We got to paddle about on our own, enjoying the night. I want to give a shout out to Mseal, Edward and Angel. I can't remember the fourth guide's name but he was great too. read more

Disclaimer: if all you want is bioluminescence, you may not get it. Bioluminescence is highly dependent upon darkness, so on a lot of nights, they will "help" it along with a big tarp over the kayaks and you'll just see some streaks of it in the water. My review is 5 stars based on the awesomeness of night kayaking and big stars and good guides. We had about 25 people in our tour. I kayak a good bit, but there were plenty of first timers, and our guides did a great job of getting them up to snuff quickly. The paddle in the channel down to the lagoon is crazy. There are just so many companies and not enough space. On the way, our guides did a great job keeping our group quiet and sane. Other tours coming our way were completely disorganized and nearly crashed. Our ride was chill and easy. In the lagoon, the tarp trick wasn't really for me. I had much more fun laying on my back in the boat and looking at the stars. Perfection! This was my first time night kayaking and I loved it. So much more peaceful! Even with the weak bioluminescence, this was my single favorite stop in puerto Rico. read more

A beautiful dark new moon kayak ride through a small inlet to the Fajardo Bio Bay or Grande Lagoon. The water was warm and the pace relaxing. The guides explained the bioluminescent phenomena and had some large pictures they showed with flashlights. Even in March, the bioluminescence was visible when the water was disturbed by your hand. They brought tarps to cover us up and make it darker, which was great. Even the water in your canoe would glow when stirred. A short astronomy lesson, using a super bright flashlight and pointing out Venus and mars, Mercury was even visible as we entered the lagoon at dusk. About ten minutes of free kayaking. One of our group drifted away and we were able to "rescue" them by giving them a few rowing tips. A great activity for our first day in Puerto Rico. read more

Horrible. We booked for 6:15, and showed up at 5:45. They changed the time to 7; sent an email-which I missed, no call or text . So we signed in and waited for a hour, only to be told right before that one person had to get weighed and ended up being over the weight limit (by 5 pounds) and they were extremely rude about it an unaccommodating. We kept asking about why and combined we were way less than 500 pounds. But he wasn't explaining just kept repeating he's over the limit. Later we found out it was an insurance thing, which I understand but they could have weighed him as we checked in and explained better or even offered a partial refund. The route was a LOT of fun. We took the tour that started at sunset, so most of the trip out was in the waning light so we could see the mangrove forest. The bioluminescent plankton was SO COOL. What an awesome adventure! Let me first say that our actual kayak tour was amazing. Yes, you get wet... But it's only because you're mounting the kayak from actual water. Plan accordingly listen to their instructions follow their directions and you'll have an amazing time. And, if you happen to throw away your ID, credit card vaccination card and all of your cash in a Ziploc bag in the trash, at 2 o'clock in the morning they will go and find it for you and meet you somewhere to give it back. This was the COOLEST thing we have ever seen! We booked it for a group of 8 pretty easily. We happened to be visiting the week where there was a new moon so it was extra dark and you could see so much of the bioluminescence! The guides were very efficient and super informative. You get a small educational lesson at the same time and we all really enjoyed to know the nature around us and they even gave us a quick tour of the night sky stars. Would highly recommend, I wish I remember the name of our guide but he wa so friendly, upbeat and made it super fun for all. My sisters and I had a very positive experience going on a tour of the bio bay with EcoAction on New Year's Day 2020, four days after they reopened post hurricane Maria. Nani got us signed up and gave us her recommendations of where to go (and not go) while we waited for the tour to start. Emilio was our main tour guide, a very kind and warm person who really knows his way around running a tour group. Chato was another guide who was very funny and helpful. Terrible. Avoid this company. Avoid the bay in general until it's clear that the bioluminescence has fully recovered from what happened in November 2013, as the bay did not glow on our tour. If you must go out, bring a waterproof flashlight or lantern. You'll be the hero of your tour group. Three of us, all with significant kayaking experience, went out for a tour with Eco Action on Dec. 23rd. The trip was miserable, disappointing, and downright dangerous. As others have said, you paddle through a narrow mangrove channel to reach the glowing lagoon. There are many tour companies operating in the bay, so at any given time, there are about 15-20 kayaks (per tour) going in and out of the channel. That's beyond the control of any one company, but it highlights the need for organization to minimize collisions and make sure that boats don't end up with the wrong tour. Approximately two-thirds of our tour group had no kayaking experience whatsoever. Given the set-up of this tour (pitch-black, no flashlights, narrow conditions, tangled trees), it's downright irresponsible to take first-time kayakers. Even if your tour company tells you it's okay, please consider your own and your group's abilities before committing time and money to this. You don't need extensive experience, but this really shouldn't be your first time in a kayak or canoe. The mangrove channel was a nightmare gauntlet. Collisions with other boats, both in our group and in other groups, were frequent, confusing, and traumatic. Both guides had tied a second kayak to their boats to tow out some tour members, so whenever a guide tried to stop to help a boat stuck in the trees, there was a second kayak whip-sawing around into the nearby kayaks. Then there's the light issue. Guide boats have flashlights or lanterns, but they'll only turn them on for a few seconds at a time, usually after several boats have collided or wrecked into the trees. Otherwise, you get a glowstick on the front and back of your boat. The glowsticks fell off a few kayaks, leaving us unable to gauge how close we were to the boats around us. There's supposed to be a guide boat leading the tour, but at one point, we were either so far ahead or behind of that boat that we were plowing forward into total darkness - while another guide boat behind us shouted at us to go faster. We were hit several times by other kayaks, and each of us was hit at least once in the head by paddles from other boats as they crashed into us. No one, least of all the guides, seemed to care. The real disappointment came when we reached the lagoon. It's just not glowing. You can tell the guides are aware, since they make sure to mention that "it's seasonal" and that in the winter, tides wash some of the plankton out. That may be, but a simple online search shows that the bay went dark in November 2013. This won't stop Eco Action from charging you for the privilege of paddling briefly through the dark water before it's time to head back into the mangrove swamp for another round of bumper boats. We were so disappointed in both the tour quality/organization and the darkness of the bay that we spoke to a guide as soon as we were back on shore. Sadly, we were met with more unprofessionalism. The guide told us that we were the first people to ever be disappointed by the bay (we weren't even the first people on our tour to be disappointed, let alone on Yelp/TripAdvisor). We were told it must have been hard for us since we didn't know how to kayak (we did). Finally, we were told that if we didn't like the darkness in the mangrove channel, we should have brought a flashlight with us - this despite the repeated warnings not to bring anything AT ALL into the boats. We were charged double the posted rate on Eco Action's website (cash only!) for the privilege of being battered around and led to the biological equivalent of the emperor's new clothes. It's possible that the bay will recover fully and live up to the experiences of those who went pre-Nov 2013, but if/when that happens - please book a tour with a company that takes proper safety and organizational precautions, especially with less experienced boaters. read more

I booked our tour for 6 people 5 days in advance via my American Express card . They emailed back to confirm we signed waivers etc . I had also talked to one of the operators at the tour to confirm our reservation. The day of our tour I received an email stating that our tour was canceled. No reason , just canceled. I called and they said they did not take American Express. Told me I could use my visa when we came , no problem. Received another phone call a few hours later saying the tour was canceled because of weather. Not a cloud in the sky . Had a friend call and they were willing to sell her our tickets. I spoke with the owner who gave no apologies or explanation. They were not willing to take my American Express so , they resold our tickets . They were very dishonest in the business behavior and I have all tje documentation to prove it ! Buyer beware . Bad business read more

By far, the worst kayaking experience I have ever had. There was nothing enjoyable about this tour. The only time I actually liked it was when I got back to the shore and got off my kayak. First of all, this is the most disorganized tour company I have ever encountered. They took our reservations, said they would email us a confirmation, but never did. Then they were an hour late picking us up from our hotel. The tour itself was a complete disaster. There were about 15 kayaks and 3 tour guides. One was supposed to stay up front and the other two were supposed to hang towards the back to make sure no one gets lost. You can't see anything in the mangrove swamps so you end up running into the branches and other kayaks and it becomes a complete and utter mess. To top it off, the mangrove swamp was fairly narrow and there was traffic going both ways which made navigating even worse. When we reached to the end, it started pouring and the guides stopped our kayaks in the middle to talk about planktons for 15 minutes in the pouring rain. Pretty sure no one cared at that point since we were getting rained on and it was freezing cold. The disorganization of the tour really took away from the experience and the bioluminescence we saw wasn't impressive at all. Apparently December is not a good time to go on this tour but if you do decide to go on one, I suggest you find another tour group. I would not recommend this to any of my friends. read more

I took the bioluminescence tour. Yes it was disorganized, yes it was confusing, yes the place was hard to find and yes I was quoted one price and when I got there it was 10 ten dollars more. However, was it fun?? Hell yeah!! Was it miserable? Hell Yeah!! Did we have dumb people asking silly questions delaying the trip?? Yes. Did I argue with an attendant? Yes!! Did he try to speak Spanish so I wouldn't know what he was saying?? Yes!! Did it work? No, since I understood Spanish. The excursion was funny and a complete cluster. I had a headlight so I could shine it thru the darkness of the mangrove. I ran into the mangrove branches numerous times and were turning the light on and off until I arrived in cluster and everyone was yelling keep the damn light on. (There is nothing like almost running your eye into a Mangrove branch) Somone flipped their kayak over and fell out. The launch site smelled of rotten seaweed so take extra shoes that you don't want unless you want to step in slime. Wear a bathing suit and make your reservations online and pay in advance. You will be wet from the lagoon and from the rain. The best time to see them is late August early September. You will have to agitate the water but it looks sort of white purplish colors that glow. We stayed out in the lagoon for 10 -20 minutes until it started to pour down rain. The Bioluminence bay' animals start displaying light about halfway to the lagoon as you are paddling in the kayak. The lagoon's the fish light up too as well as the plankton. All an All it was crazy fun outing....one more thing eat, pee and before you go because the only clean toliet is in a restaraunt near the launch site. Don't forget bring bug spray , wear a Rash Guard shirt leave all electronics at home as well as anything you really want. read more

We booked two excursions with this company. First, we went horseback riding. The company owner, Peter, picked us up at the hotel. He was very friendly and laid back. He took us to the stable that was run by another company. We had to pay cash at the stable and could only pay for the transportation with our credit card. The trail ride was amazing, starting through the mangrove forests and making our way out to the beach. There was nobody on the beach and the horses trotted in the shallow water. After a short picture break, back through the mangrove forest and to the stable. The guides were great. Peter was there to pick us up. Then Peter gave us an unexpected free tour of the San juan area, pointing out different beaches for us to explore. As for the bio bay tour, Peter had warned us ahead of time that the plankton were not shining very bright due to recent storms and contamination. It was still an amazing tour. Kayaking through the canal was awesome! It was pitch black at times and we could only follow the glow sticks attached to the kayaks in front of us. We saw more bioluminescence in the canal than in the bay itself. My 13 year old daughter was afraid of the dark but everybody else thought the trip was amazing. I would definitely book other excursions with this company in the future. read more

I was referred to this company by my host... All my booking was done over text message, and one phone call! It was 45+tax, ended up paying like 51-52/person. The place its hard to find, but all companies leave form the same place... I got GPS, took us right there.... Over all the experience was amazing... The planktons did not shine to its max potential, but it was still amazing! The guid was amazing he didn't rush us spoke both english and Spanish, was patient to even the slow paddlers, we did hit trees other boats but it was all super fun! The main idea is, any company you would choose would have been a similar experiencer... From what I understand all 14 companies are like a family in the end working kinda together to make this as pleasant and safe as possible! We had a 70 year lady in our group... Even she made it! The most unorganized kayaking company!! We showed up on time and they started nearly 45 minutes late. They asked how many people had never kayaked and a huge portion of us said no. First of all it's pitch dark. We get in a kayak and absolutely no instructions. They just said.. Ok follow us. We got on our way and it was a joke! Absolutely no instructions the entire way. People were crying. The tour guide was getting irritated and yelling in Spanish. Too bad but we understood everything he said. Several of us ran into the mangroves. They can literally hit you in the head and you have no clue bc it is pitch dark. Several of us complained and all he did was argue back with us and said we signed a waiver. What a joke! The only reason they got a one star rating is because there was no option for zero. They were late to be at the bay and rude at check in. This was a badly run tour where the tour guide was rude to say the least. He did not give proper direction despite knowing that the majority of the people on the tour were new to kayaking. He left my group in the mangroves to the point where another tour's guide came and offered assistance to get us out. When he approached our tour guide explaining that this was an issue and that we needed further assistance, his reply was as follows, "It is a survivor lesson for them." When approached at the end about having left us and giving little guidance he denied it all and told us that if we were unhappy to call our credit cards and try to dispute the charges because he was doing nothing about it. I highly recommend you think twice about every using them for a tour. I highly reccomend seeing the bioluminecsent Bay but with any any other tour group possible. read more
