My estimates were quite high, whereas the Berkeley "Refresh" dentist I went to yesterday had a much lower estimate including a treatment plan to save teeth your office was going cap & crown. I had a TWO-HOUR root canal appointment scheduled for August 31st. When the appointment was originally scheduled, I was specifically informed that if I needed to cancel or reschedule, I was required to give the office 72 hours' notice. Fair enough. I understood and respected that policy. Then, on August 25th, the office contacted me and offered me an appointment for that same afternoon. I explained that I couldn't make it that day, and the staff member told me, "We'll see you on the 31st." I said okay. At that point, there should have been absolutely no confusion about whether I intended to keep my appointment. Fast forward to Friday: I was at WORK and apparently missed their request to "confirm" my Monday appointment. I was later informed that because I did not respond between approximately 2:22 PM and 3:45 PM, they cancelled my TWO-HOUR appointment. Let that sink in. Patients are expected to provide this office 72 HOURS of notice to cancel or reschedule, yet this office apparently gave me approximately 83 MINUTES during a workday to respond before deciding I no longer wanted an appointment that I NEVER cancelled. I then drove OVER AN HOUR to this office Monday morning expecting to receive the treatment I had scheduled, only to find out after arriving that they had cancelled it. When I made it clear that I had come for my scheduled appointment and told them they needed to figure out how to accommodate me, the OFFICE MANAGER told me I would have to "sit in the lobby all day." Then the front desk employee told me, "Your insurance approved it, you might as well just come back another day." Excuse me? My insurance approving the procedure has absolutely nothing to do with the issue. My time matters. My work schedule matters. The gas and time spent driving over an hour to their office matters. The fact that I arranged my morning around a TWO-HOUR medical appointment matters. "You might as well come back another day" is an incredibly dismissive response to a problem that your office created. I did not miss my appointment. I did not cancel my appointment. I did not request to reschedule my appointment. I SHOWED UP FOR MY APPOINTMENT. The office cancelled it without my authorization because I did not respond to a confirmation request quickly enough while I was working. If a patient cancelled a two-hour appointment with 83 minutes' notice, would this office consider that acceptable? Of course not. Yet apparently that level of courtesy does not have to go both ways. And telling a patient who has already driven over an hour that they can either "sit in the lobby all day" or "come back another day" is not customer service. It is dismissive and disrespectful. Had I been clearly informed when scheduling that failure to respond to a confirmation message within a specific timeframe would automatically cancel my appointment, I would understand. But that was NOT the policy explained to me. The policy explained to me was that I needed to provide 72 hours' notice if I chose to cancel or reschedule. I honored my appointment. I showed up. This office did not. The root canal isn't even what left a bad taste in my mouth -- I never got far enough to have one.

Out of my many appointments for adjustments, she was the one worker who stood out. Even though I had been a patient there for a while, she explained what was happening and answered my questions patiently. She was also very gentle in doing the adjustments, and I didn't feel at all like I was being rushed. I just wanted to give her a shoutout because she made my experience that much better. As for the office and the wait times... that's another story.

When I finally got in to sign paperwork, she was literally licking her fingers to surf through the pages before handing it to me--gross! No gloves or anything! I have had a few crowns replaced in the last few years and never had the attention paid to me that Dr. Makkiyah, and her teammates, Jared and Lydia did. From x-rays to final cementing of new crowns, they were amazing, explaining everything to me very carefully and then executing with the utmost care and precision. They have amazing technology that assists them with the best possible delivery. They were able to remove two old crowns, measure for new ones and have those ready in just a couple of hours. I am so impressed. But again, this alone would not be that impressive if it weren't for the team's caring and concern for my comfort and well being. They made a not very fun procedure into something more than tolerable. Even when she administered the pain shots, they did something that made that less painful. I also wear Invisalign retainers so they made a point of keeping the shape of the crowns exactly as my old ones were, saving me the expense of obtaining new retainers. In my lifetime, I have probably been to at least 7 dentists in various cities and I wish I had met Dr. Makkiyah sooner!

update: i just wanted to come back and update my review! after going to a different dentist…read morefollowing my horrible experience here, i was able to get a routine cleaning with no issue. there was no need for me to get the "deep cleaning" they claimed i needed. they wanted to numb me and do a much more extensive and expensive cleaning while i was pregnant, just for me to find out afterward that it wasn't even necessary. it honestly made me feel like they were more concerned about making money than actually doing what was best for me. save yourself the trouble and get a second opinion or just choose a different place altogether. after my experience, i truly don't feel like they care about their patients here, just making a profit.
