I first found out about Claudine at Ebel Artistry thru the Photographers that we hired to do the photos for my parents 50th Anniversary day and our Vanity Fair Family photo shoot. She came highly recommended by them and I went to meet her at her beauty studio to discuss the looks and everything we wanted. Something that was important to us was we wanted someone who used clean and organic makeup, but would make us look naturally glamorous and photo ready as well and Claudine did just that! Claudine and her hairstylist were the perfect fit for my parents special day! Not only did she make us all look beautiful and glamorous, camera ready, but Claudine and her hair stylist kept us all on schedule and they were very professional. Time was of the essence on that day and they took it all in stride and made it fun and lively and were so helpful too. Plus, she brought us all little makeup goodies! Claudine is a true artist! I hired Claudine for many years as a Commercial Make-up Artist for Photo & Video shoots. Recently she did my hair and make-up for a Gala I was presenting at. I felt so confident that evening -- Claudine asked for inspiration photos and asked great questions to understand specifically what I liked about the hair and make-up in each photo. She nailed both. I felt natural, yet it was so elevated from my everyday look! I even slept in my lashes and wore them for a few days after! I am just coming out of a trance...... Seriously the BEST facial I have ever had! Claudine is magical. Her energy, intuitiveness to the needs of my skin and her touch alone will put you in deep relaxation. I felt like it was a massage not just for my face, but neck, arms, hands....she hit many pressure points, and has amazing techniques. I love the fact that she uses clean produts so I feel good about what is being aborbed by my skin. Her studio space is classy, clean and just makes ya feel good. I was so lucky to find Claudine to do my wedding day makeup. It was important to me that still looked like myself, which was a lot harder to find than you would think! Claudine did an outstanding job. She uses skin care and makeup with very natural and organic ingredients, and the advice she gave me to help prepare my skin in the months leading up to the wedding worked wonders. Claudine is fantastic. I have always been leery of getting facials as my skin is highly reactive and tends to react to any kind of products or contact. However, Claudine is highly present when doing her work and uses all natural, organic products that do not irritate my condition. Not only is Shawna professional, clean, and efficient, all the things you want in a makeup artist - she is also so creative, talented and personable. Shawna made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day! I normally wear minimal makeup in my daily life, so for my wedding I was concerned about looking way overdone. Shawna absolutely nailed what I asked for. She made me feel like a more elegant, polished version of myself. She knew right away how to accentuate my features but still have a natural look. The touch up kit made it easy for me to fix my lip color in between photos. For my hair, Shawna did an amazing updo that I never would have been able to do myself! I gave her some creative freedom with the hairstyle and was so happy with the result. An updo is not easy with my hair because it's very thick and heavy, but somehow it stayed in place all night through lots of hugs and dancing. The lash extensions were done a couple days prior to the wedding. She had a few different options ranging from natural-looking to more dramatic. I loved that I didn't worry about sweating or crying off mascara or strip lashes during my wedding, and they looked beautiful! I was a lash newbie but Shawna gave me easy instructions on how to care for them. The process does take a couple hours if you're getting a full set, but it's absolutely worth it. I definitely recommend scheduling a trial if you can, to give you the opportunity to try different options ahead of time, show her inspiration photos, etc. It made me feel much better going into my wedding day knowing we already had an idea of the look I wanted. I decided to ask for pro help for my wedding hair and I settled on Akasu by chance since it was near to our venue and had good reviews. Mara did my hair and was amazing. She did a small test run prior to the event and was genuinely friendly, helped me plan carefully for what would work best for the event, and listened to my ideas. What made her work truly exceptional, however, was her willingness to make last minute changes when the weather heated up in Portland and I realized that a full updo would be the most comfortable choice. Without time for a practice run, she calmly agreed that this would be a great idea and that she would be able to make it happen. Day of the wedding, she looked at a few photos I'd gathered and got to work. She took extra time and created a lovely and comfortable updo (even unbraiding and redoing a section that I wanted to change) and gave me tips on veil and flower placement. My hair stayed in place throughout the night and looked the most 'under control' that it ever has! Price was very reasonable and service excellent. I recommend for anyone who doesn't want to deal with the full bridal experience (and the prices that come with it) but wants to look great.

It's really the opposite of Portland's typical frou frou salon where you are greeted by a spray tanned bleached blonde smacking gum calling you "hun." How refreshing! This place is all about providing the best services with the best products, by the best staff. The staff is what I think sets this salon apart from others, among many other unique aspects. The staff are the most knowlegdable, passionate people who were hand picked by the owner who takes no short cuts whatsoever. Each one of them will take the time to explain the products, where they come from, and why they were picked. Another great aspect of this salon is time. I originally went to Akasu for a haircut. I came in with a crazy long mane and decided to chop it. It took about an hour. Jen Healy did an an excellent job. She took her sweet time and gave me all of her attention and input. Lots of stylists tend to lose focus and want you out of their chair so they can get to the next person, but she did the opposite. A couple weeks later I decided the cut wasn't short enough and went back to take few more inches off. Jen took another full hour for the trim and did it FO FREE! I couldn't have left happier. Another great aspect is that Akasu hires employees and not independent contractors. This is such a relief! It means that the cattiness and obligations to certain stylists who aren't necessarily the best person for the job at hand are completely eliminated. So I can send my girlfriends with long hair to Tyra because she specializes in long hair, and my girlfriends with short hair to Jen, because she works well with short hair, etc. It means that the owner wants clients to have the best service possible. One last thing! Akasu offers hour-long Yonka (yes, YONKA!!!!) facials for only $75!! Unreal, right? I'm dying to try one and will let you all know how it goes. Or you can try one and let me know? They offer referrals rewards, too. Akasu is as good as it gets and I would recommend this salon to any and everyone!
