I love this winery - it's one of my favorites in BC (and I've been around the bend, trust me). It is definitely my favorite of the Similkameen.
One thing about the Similkameen Valley is how friendly and unpretentious the people in this region are. Unlike the Golden Mile or Kelowna, there are no affectations, just people who really enjoy their grapes, preparing their wines and talking and tasting them. And Dale and Jeri Estin definitely fit in this category.
The winery is a charming little house where they also conduct their barreling and bottling. Dale is a scientist by trade (gotta pay the bills until a winery pays off!) and can do his own analysis of the necessary components of the wine. Jeri is a great hostess and is always personable and cheerful, managing to be everyone's friend even when she has to balance herself between an obnoxious taster and a clearly disgusted other group. They both are great people and I really am glad to have met them and become friends with them over time.
But it's really all about the wines, and this place comes out swinging. Their gewurztraminer has a light, crisp flavor that's slightly citrus, with a beautiful orange and lily fragrance. It's unique to a lot of BC ones which specialize in apples and honeydew as an aroma with something a good deal headier on the palate. They also have a chardonnay that I'm not remembering as strongly, but I know I liked it because it didn't taste like a Napa, i.e. "I can't believe this [chard] doesn't taste like butter!" kind of reaction. It's unoaked so that's probably why.
The pinot noir is lighter and almost watery to the appearance, but what is amazing here is their cabernet franc. I love their cab franc - it is far and away my favorite cabernet franc in the province and perhaps my favorite wine in BC. It's a very unique red - while most in BC try to imitate the desert style by getting a roasted coffee kind of aroma, this cab franc is medium-bodied and not espresso-like at all. In fact, it's very refreshing, because it has an herbaceous character that is balanced by a slight burning wood feel, a smokiness that's got a bit of a kick to it. A rosemary, lavender like character comes out from this red, which is why I love it so much.
They have a malbec and a blend that I haven't gotten to try yet, but just you wait! I'm certainly going to come back again next summer. read more
