Weekday lunch menu is very cheap (most meals under $10) with very generous portions. The two of us…read moreshared two dishes and were quite full. DISH 1: Garden rib with fried rice. It's deep fried battered pork covered in Peking sauce and sesame seeds. It tastes similar to sweet and sour pork. If you're a fan of very sweet dishes then you would like it. I found it a little too rich for my taste. I also prefer the beef strip version of this dish from Jackpot Noodles because the batter is thinner (and stays crispier) with their dish. DISH 2: Vermicelli with BBQ rib meat and spring rolls with lettuce and cucumber. It was very fresh and tasty. Great contrast to the thick and sweet Garden rib. I'll definitely get this again. We went at 1.30pm and the place was not too busy so the service was quite good. We will return for another weekday lunch.

Red Galanga Asian Cuisine is a restaurant just off Oxford Street in Bulimba. It's just up from…read moreOxford 152 on Wambool Street and is open for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week. Although it calls itself Asian Cuisine, it's predominantly Thai cuisine - however there are a few dishes of other cuisines, like GadoGado (Indonesian), Chicken and corn soup (Chinese), Takoyaki (Japanese) and Teriyaki (Japanese). The menu is really quite extensive, and there is a long Specials menu with some fantastic dishes. Some of the highlights of the Specials menu is the Salmon Lover (grilled salmon in thick red curry sauce with crispy basil), Red Galanga Fish (deep fried fish with ginger and vegetables) and Spicy Duck Adventure (spicy stir fried roasted duck with chilli, garlic, basil and vegetables) The Red Duck Curry is really delicious with lots of fruit in it - it's strange how fruit like lychee, tomato and grape go so well with red curry and duck. There's also a Thai favourite on the dessert menu, Black sticky rice with coconut milk! YUM! Red Galanga also has lunch specials - Take away for $10.50 and Dine-in for $12.50 and a choice of stir-fry, curry and noodles. An extra $2 for 2 pieces of entree - spring roll, curry puff, fish cake or golden parcel.

It was on one of these nights we decided to try out a new Asian restaurant - Red Galanga. This was actually well over a year ago, around the time they changed the name from 'Red Ginger' to something a little more exotic. We were immediately drawn to the Salmon Lover - a thick cut of salmon that is juicy and always perfectly cooked, served with an assortment of delicious Asian vegetables with a mild creamy red curry sauce. The vegetables are particularly great in this fresh and filling meal, as they are served beautifully crunchy and always bright and fresh in colour. No sogginess here! We were also enamored by the Crispy Duck - succulent pieces of flavoursome and LEAN duck with of course a fittingly crispy skin, sliced atop a bed of more crispy vegetables, served with a thick teriyaki sauce to drizzle over. We generally order 'enough rice for two' and enjoy layering the two dishes atop a bed of rice. They taste surprisingly tasty mixed together, and I have been known to save the left over dregs of Salmon Lover sauce to enjoy with fresh rice the next morning. :3 There has not been a time we have ordered from this place and not ordered our 'usual'. I know we should broaden our horizons and sample the other delights on offer, but these dishes are just SO GOOD! Something to note - wether we are picking up take away or are sitting in enjoying the ambiance of the simple but elegant and clean restaurant area, the food has always been presented with the same level of skill and care. Staff are always very friendly and accommodating, and the food is generally prepared very quickly (around 20 minutes from ordering). This is an absolute gem of a restaurant, and I encourage you to try it out for yourself.

I really liked the mixed thin and thick yellow noodles with prawns, white fish, fish balls, tofu, and squid. I asked for them to make it extra spicy and they put nice pieces of chili in my bowl. The broth looked like a completely different color than my friend who ordered the same thing. We ended up sitting on the Chinese and Malaysian side instead of the Vietnamese side since the restaurant set up is a bit interesting. The restaurant is split into two as a liquor shop and massage business are set up between the two. I was wondering why I couldn't find any Vietnamese items on the menu. The spring rolls were OK. I can make much better ones. They are filled with tiny pieces of meat and too many glass noodles with mushrooms and carrots. The noodles need to be minimal as the flavor should come from the pork. They were really nice when we asked to substitute the tom yum seafood for chicken. They were so kind to refill our water as well. Service was great especially for how busy they were. You could see them running from restaurant to restaurant so I am thinking you can order off the other menu. You probably just have to ask. West End has not disappointed me yet and I already have at least three more places to try.

I was always…read moreconvinced I would hate pho, but when I first arrived in Australia this place was one of the first restaurants some family members wanted me to try. I can officially say I'm a pho addict now. I love pho and I love my pho bar. I've dined in on both weekends and weekdays and have never had a bad experience. It is modern and clean, nice and airy as well. Always start with the spring rolls, they're always stuffed with flavour and perfect to snack on while waiting for your main. My favourite pho bowl is the "my spicy", the chicken and beef is always perfectly tender and the broth is to die for. It's not actually very spicy, so I take full advantage of the serve yourself chilli bar and add some heat to my bowl. The service can sometimes be a little slow but it's very rare to see more than one waitress at a time so I understand, and it's always worth the wait. There's a "Super Bowl challenge" which I have yet to attempt, check out the pictures on the wall of all the challengers, you'd have to make sure your stomach has been empty for days to beat this one!

And here, for $12 you can get a generous serving of it, with your choice of up to 3 toppings. The owners have just opened recently in the little shopping centre off Kooringal Drive right next to my favourite Sushi 79 and they are making a killing of it. No more do we have to drive all the way to Darra for our noodle soup, no more do we need to wipe the tables clean ourselves... no more do we have to ask dodgy or not dodgy? These guys are the real deal. They charge 3 dollars more than the places in Darra, but they bring you the cuisine with fresh ingredients, a clean atmosphere and elegant cutlery and bowls. These guys have put some thought into revamping the daggy noodle shop in the suburbs and on a Friday night the place is pretty busy. They are also the home of the SUPER BOWL CHALLENGE worth $35. Equalling 4 servings of the normal bowl of noodle soup, should you finish it in the hour, you get it for free, and your picture and name on the board of fame. Many have tried (2 women even) and none have succeeded so far... but give it time because the place has only been open for less than a few months. You need to call ahead to tell them if you're planning on taking the challenge but it's very exciting when someone does, they get an introduction with a microphone and everyone looks. It's a pretty big bowl too so it's not for the faint hearted. What a great little place, the western suburbs are looking up and putting themselves on the map with cuisine like this. Awesome Pho. Was super stoked, but then was super sad as it doesn't taste the same anymore. We've been patronizing Kim Khanh for years now -- like close to 10 years, probably through several owners -- and it's the first time I was slightly disappointed with my experience. The portions have shrunk -- I'd much rather they raise the prices and leave the portions alone. I thought the bun bo hue was decent, nice broth and not greasy. The fresh spring rolls were not great. Bo luc lac was nice and tasty. We always get the banh hoi -- like I said, shrunk in size like by 30%. Hope it improves.... it's been our family fave for years now. Sad to see it go down hill.

The broth is moreish, the serving size plentiful, and at $12.95 a real bargain without having to travel to places like West End where Vietnamese food flourishes. I would put this small, unassuming place up there with the likes of Trang, Ramen Danbo, Sushi Edo and others for its Pho. Simply delicious, noodle texture is excellent, and whatever is happening behind us in the kitchen is lip-smacking magic. It's amazing what a simple bit of marketing can do, a name change, a bit of interior decorating, and putting forward more into the open a menu that was probably there all along, but went unnoticed because it was obscured by refrigerated counters that looked like they pushed pastries more than Vietnamese food perfection. It's our new go-to in The Gap.
