This place really should get 3.5 stars, but seeing as 4 stars is a fairly high rating, 3 it is.
Being in the area we saw Conor's post on Yelp and BF instantly had a craving for eggs benny with salmon. Popped in to what was a small, cute cafe and snuggled into the corner booth.
We ordered: 2 flat whites, salmon eggs benedict ($14.80) for the BF, me: mixed mushroom saute (oyster, shiitake and flat mushrooms) on toast with "herb hollandaise" ($11.80) and I added a poached egg ($3).
PROS:
- coffee. Was actually decent even though the joint has a greasy-spoon feel.
- prices. Quite competitive. Lunch looks even cheaper than breakfast - $9 sandwiches are served with chips and salad.
- the food itself was fairly tasty and nicely presented. BF's salmon benedict came with a little hash brown, which he loved. The toast they use was thickly sliced from a fresh loaf, a nice touch. My mushroom dish came out with a small side salad of rocket and tomato, which I appreciated, plus I got 2 poached eggs even though I asked for one.
CONS:
- overall it was fairly clean but on the ledge next to our bench there was a plethora of dead flies - literally a fly graveyard. Ick.
-BF's eggs were nicely poached but mine were cooked through. Such a no no.
- My "herb hollandaise" was just normal hollandaise, and also a too small portion for my liking (pour on the hollandaise, I say). But BF thought it was OK.
All in all our bill was $35 all up which is pretty good for Sydney. I'd come back again for the cheap sandwiches, for sure. read more
