They must have 6 picnic benches with most of them in the shade which is very beneficial. Also have plenty of park benches too. The grass area is also very nice. It's not huge but enough for kids to run around and have a good time. The big toy is aged, but still very nice and they have toddler swings. Yes, the beach isn't large, as it is the same size as it was 30 years ago. They have the are roped off. There is plenty of beach are for kids to play in the sand. There are life guards there too...

This beach is within walking distance to the downtown district, but with the intense heat you might want to rent a car or take a Lyft/Uber. I found that Lyft was much less popular on the island and thus cheaper than Uber by 50-100%.

We asked a number of people before we found the public showers and the changing rooms. Im not used to having that many broken shells/shells on the beach when you walk up. It was a decent crowd on the beach, still plenty of room to spread our towels out and not feel we were on top of the people next to us.

Best beach on the island for waves!…read more There are quite a few surfers and swimmers enjoying the waves but they rarely get close because the waves on shore keep the swimmers busy! Make sure your in shape to swim because the waves beat down on you hard. Otherwise a great beach that's nice and close to the farmers market and cisco brewery. No beach permit required.

Fourth of all, there is VERY large parking lot for the bicycles. Fifth and not the least, it has SURFSIDE BEACH SHACK. This beach is understandably busy; not to worry, they have a lifeguard on duty. The rough tide makes it nearly impossible to swim or do anything, but our dog went nuts and LOVED every wave that came crashing into him; nearly sweeping him away at times. The beauty of being isolated and alone with no facilities, no people or lifeguards or anything, gives this beach a very particular feeling of freedom and peace. Initially thinking we made a mistake going out to the west end of the island, we greatly enjoyed it, and made some unique memories strolling the shoreline.

You must have a four wheeled vehicle to get onto Great Point, and soon after the gate you realize why. The sand does get deep on the road, and even deeper on the beach. Similar to driving in snow, your wheels fall into the groves of earlier travelers, which raises the blood pressure in meeting situations. Our Honda Pilot scraped the bottom (5 adults and 2 kids) most of the way, but it's soft sand and didn't do any damage (now that I said that about half way home the engine will shut down because the catalytic converter is full of sand...). We stopped just south of the lighthouse, and had a good stretch of beach to ourselves. After a while we walked up to the point and found it packed with cars. I'm not sure why you'd purposely drive all that way and want to be that close to anyone else. Isn't it the point to get away from people?? The sand is a little abrasive, so it's best to wear shoes if you go for a walk. The east side was calm the day we went, but it all depends on the wind. Keep your eyes peeled for the seals swimming by. Also, wear bug spray. The mosquito's get vicious out there, especially around 4 when you are driving through the dunes on the way back to the road.

A very wild place…read more An absolutely beautiful island of the west coast of Nantucket. it's completely wild, pristine and totally clean and free. The only problem is you can't go there. Or at least I can't go there. I've sailed and kayaked around it but it is very, very, very private and uninvited guests are not allowed. I'm definitely one of those uninvited guests. Only a few dozen families live there during the summer and I have heard that there is no water or utilities. You can see huge yachts parked out near the island and I suspect the people that owned the yachts have the houses on the island. I have certainly never seen any property for sale and I can't imagine what the price would be. So, Tuckernuck is a gorgeous, wild and pristine place 30 miles away from Cape Cod. For that it gets 5 stars. Unfortunately it's only for a select few and that select few sure as hell doesn't include me. That gives it 1 star. Ergo 3 stars.

Tuckernuck is nowhere near as wild and pristine as the previous reviewer makes it out to be, though…read morethe Tuckernuck Land Trust has acquired some land to attempt to save a bit of the wild. Too many houses have been built. Many of the original settlers of Tuckernuck were Dunhams and Coffins, family of mine from Nantucket, and prior to running a single telephone line there in about 1901 it was extremely isolated. Very few people lived there year round (my great-great-grandfather's brother being one who did, but only after making his fortune in the lumber business on the mainland), and they made their living by bird hunting and fishing. Today it's a summer retreat for the rich, none of my family still owns (or could afford) anything there, and we're as unwelcome as the first reviewer. I can get no closer than Madaket.

It was nice that it wasn't crowded, and the walking path is easy to traverse. There's a fenced area over by the bluffs that has nice views of the beach and ocean. There's signage indicating some facts and history. You can't go inside the lighthouse, as expected, but you can't walk right up to the front door, which is kinda neat. Expect to spend about 30 minutes here, mostly with a smooth drive. AT&T cell service is limited so screenshot and directions in case you're out of range of internet coverage!
