I (F33, attorney) relied on reviews when signing up my younger brother (M17, Wisconsin high schooler) for Varsity Tutors and I would have appreciated this review. I take on some parenting roles for my brother since my parents are going through difficult times. I signed up for their ACT prep service on July 24, 2023, in anticipation of the September 9, 2023 ACT. When I spoke with their agent, who outlined the service to me and their terms, I asked specifically if I would be charged for two months or if I could get prorated amounts back for the days we would not be using the service. You see, we only needed a month and a few days since his ACT was only a month and a few days away. The agent said yes it would be prorated. Well, I was charged for the full second month. And when I requested a refund, Varsity Tutors informed me that the terms indicated I was not entitled to one. That is unfortunate, since that was an additional $700+ charge I was not expecting (the service cost $749 per month). I didn't make a fuss, but I went to cancel the service (stay tuned to see that they did not cancel). At around this time, I discovered that my brother's tutor did not review ACT-specific questions. The tutor taught the math content generally, as if it were a high school classroom, which my brother didn't need as he was already an A math student. When I asked the tutor for more traditional test prep, which is what I requested from the beginning, he asked me if I had sample ACT questions to use. This was... shocking. At this point, by August 29, 2023, I texted Varsity Tutors to cancel my membership and then I chatted with an agent by phone to cancel my membership. I spoke about the disappointment with the tutor, and the agent said they felt so bad for the bad service that they were willing to offer a free month. I specifically stated that we have no intention of continuing membership, but that we might once we receive the student's ACT scores, assuming the student wanted to continue trying for a better score. I stated that we did not wish to continue being automatically charged. The agent said they understood. The agent gave us the free month, which again I told the agent we were unlikely to use--the free month was framed as simply a consolation for the bad service. I think what happens next may not surprise you. I checked my bank statement and saw that I was charged AGAIN another $749 dollars (at this point I've received a total of $1,498 in surprise charges) from Varsity Tutors. This is $1,498 I didn't agree to, ON TOP of the $749 for the first month that was bad service. A new agent told me that when I accepted the free month I accepted a continuation of automatic charges. This was, again, news to me. Please keep in mind that we have not once used this service since the end of that first month. I am told that I will again unlikely see a refund for this new $749 charge. To add insult to injury, we didn't even get that "free month" that was the "justification" for continuing to charge us. I considered ourselves $1,498 in the hole for Varsity Tutor services we didn't, and never intended, to use. In the end, and after my scathing review, Varsity Tutors ended up refunding me (thank you). If you choose to go with Varsity Tutors, I would take contemporaneous notes and (legally) record your interactions with the agents to make sure you don't get similarly blindsided.

Since, I have spent hours chatting with customer service because he has never been able to join another class since. Out of 4 customer service reps, only 2 cared and did (or said they did) what they could to try to sort out the issue. Each said I would receive a follow up email once their supervisor was able to assist, but I never received such email. The other 2 reps did not care- one gave a short answer and then left the chat, the other ended up completely ignoring me when I was unhappy with this nonchalant, non-resolving service. So here I am. This would be great if it worked, but now every time there is a class it just leaves my son crying feeling left out and me having to deal with customer service for at least an hour with no resolution. This has been completely frustrating, discouraging, and sad for me and my son. I do NOT recommend trying this out.

The staff also communicates very well with parents regarding daily reports, classroom activities, upcoming events, etc. The administration also goes above and beyond to provide an educational and positive environment for the families and children. As a parent, it is a wonderful feeling to see your child smile and be excited to see his teachers each morning.

Security: I was allowed to enter the school (after ringing the bell to get in) and could have continued through the school had I wanted to. Given what has happened at Sandy Hook, I'd say this is shocking. I stopped by the office to ask where a particular classroom was so I could pick up a child I babysit (this was my first time getting her here) they did not have my name on the list for pick up so they did call the mother and check I was able to pick up the child. She had forgotten to let the school know, so she was glad they did confirm that for her. As to the children who attend here. They seem to have real homework, not just busywork and the kids enjoy their classes and teachers. The teachers also make sure that each child is accounted for as they leave, which is great to see. Each child needs to high five the teacher and point out their adult picking them up before they can go. This way no child is ever unaccounted for. They go directly from the teacher to the parent. There are also after school activities, such as Girl Scouts available right in the building, so if you are a parent who has girls who would be interested and you need a little time after work before you could get them - Girl Scouts is a great option available to you without needing to worry about a babysitter or transportation!

Things I Like About This High School's Programs-…read more They offer all types of classes, for any people of any age. Anything from cooking to sports to swimming. My daughter takes infant swim classes here, they start at 6 months. I also lap swim here occasionally. The teachers here are attentive and well prepared. They fill up the half hour with a good variety of games and exercises. The lifeguards are always on point. The other workers are kind and happy to answer any questions. The pool and locker rooms are clean. The front desk is filled with drinks and snacks for sale in case you work up an appetite. 8 Weekly Infant Swim Classes cost a measly $26 for residents, and about $10 more for non-residents. All the classes are pretty cheap. A Thing That Mildly Annoys Me About This Swim Class- This class started with about 25 kids. About half fell off after Week 2. Now, just after Week 6, there is only 4 kids left. I not only paid for this class to get the Little One used to the water, but also to meet other kids and maybe get some play dates. C'mon, parents, keep the kids in class! Things I Hate About This High School's Programs- We're going into the Seventh Week this week. We paid for 8, and the instructor tells us we have two more classes, but the people at the desk tells us next week is the last week no matter what. Can we get on the same page please? I like to take a lot of pictures and videos of my daughter as I try to chronicle her life. There happens to be a woman in our class who must wear a string bikini to every class. I know she's worked very hard to get a nice body six months after childbirth and normally I would be like any other red-blooded male in this World and not mind it at all. But I'll be damned if this woman does not walk into every shot and photobomb every picture. My child transitioned seamlessly from the public school system to Our Redeemer.  They helped us…read moreevery step of the way!  They truly DO care about every single child in attendance.  My child has specific learning disabilities and I was hesitant at first with sending him to a private school.  I was always under the impression that the appropriate services for him would be lacking and that we would be back to square one. My concerns were totally unfounded.  Lutheran Special Schools Services at ORLS have exceeded my expectations.  My child is currently enrolled in fifth grade at ORLS. I am ECSTATIC to report that my child has gone from reading and writing at the first grade level in the public school to fourth grade level within one school year.  Also, his faith has exploded which is important to me.  Three more reasons I would recommend this learning institution:  The class sizes are small with very low student to teacher ratios.  They maintain a strict adherence to their anti-bullying policies.  Extremely open lines of communication between Administration/Faculty and families.  I cannot recommend this school highly enough!
