Especially on Nov 1st 2024 when it's just at 80 degrees, wow. The sun was out. There was a slight breeze. The leaves were falling. What a great day! My daughter in law and my grandson came with me today. Area is 100% stroller friendly. Great places to throw down a blanket and have lunch. A couple picnic tables onsite also. Beautiful tress. Beautiful pollination fields. We had a really good time. I know I'll be back.

However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

This location is incredible, rich with things to do, views to see, and adventures to have with enough time. The cabins are gorgeous, fair warning that there is no television, but honestly who cares?! I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

The drive in from DC was not bad at all. When we arrived we were told we didn't need to pay since the government was shutdown. On your way up the mountain you'll notice that there are a ton of trails. We went straight to the Visitor Center and was happy there was someone inside to guide us to the trail we wanted to hike. The views outside of the visitor center are perfect for a photo opp. Right across the street was the Fox Hollow trail where you can do a little over a mile or a 4 mile hike. I was definitely shocked how much uphill there was on the 4 mile hike. The only thing keeping me going was the beautiful views. About midway we stumbled upon a great outlook where we were able to chill a little bit before heading down hill. Riding through the rest of the park was really nice. It wasn't too busy and the national park is huge so you can explore all day long. There's places where you can camp and picnic all throughout the park. And then afterwards you can check out a local winery or brewery in the area. Have funnn!!!

Luray definitely cares about its citizens, and this park is stellar for a town of its size. Well done. If you're in the area, you can play sports or watch them.

Also it's parallel with the Appalachian Trail. That is an added bonus. What I love it for is astronomy. NOVAC does its telescope events here, because the light pollution is almost nothing. By all means I recommend going to one of these free events. The clear skies are a real treat. This is a family friendly park, and if in the area a must!

It's changed a lot, as I went back recently for the first time in about 10 more years! They used to have putt putt, which we liked. Always fun to feed the geese and walk around the pond. A great place to take a very long or short walk. Many options. Many shelters available and most are in the shade. I remember playing handball in the building, where there's now a swimming pool. I don't remember that being there. Plus they updated their sports fields. A big and great park, right on the grounds with the Shenandoah University. (Which also has changed a lot). Due to a lot of parties at the shelters plus being close to the road, I hope they have a park clean up day. Not everyone is so respectful to the land.

If you go this way, make it to the top, and turn right, it's only another .1 mile to the summit. Beautiful views and very peaceful. Good place to stop for a lunch break. We got a little turned around though and ended up walking to another part of the trail when we were trying to do the loop. Overall, we like the part of the trail that we hiked.

This is a great park. They have two play areas, one for younger children while the other one is for…read morethe older children with three levels. They have recently added several music stations. The kids really enjoy it here. In addition to the play area, there are several trails that take you through wooded areas as well as a good size frisbee golf course. They have two large pavilion areas that can be reserved. There is only one downside to the park. That is that they only have porta-johns, so as you can imagine, these can be rather unpleasant in the summer time.
