I decided to visit…read moreThe Exhibit with some girlfriends for the start of this year's birthday weekend, I though cocktails and a good gab would be appropriate here. I didn't think much of the exterior. It looked a little drab and didn't have the pizazz that I had seen on the website. However, looks can be deceiving and I was just looking forward to tasting these infamous cocktails! The Exhibit is a 3 level venue. The first floor has a bustling bar, the second is the restaurant and cocktail bar and the third hosts a cosy, plush little cinema (which I found pretty impressive). The cocktail bar is tucked-away neatly beside the restaurant. It's a gorgeous little room encased in deep, rich red paint and dark leather seating. This cocktail bar is called "The Crush Bar" and is like a little drinking den in The Exhibit. Their cocktail list is pretty impressive. I'm immediately drawn to the Japanese cocktail, purely based on the name as I'm intrigued to see if it actually *tastes* Japanese! Unfortunately, it's a little too strong for my liking although my friend seems to be lapping it up! I finally decide on the Abermarle Sour as my drink for the evening - light and fruity and doesn't taste alcoholic in the slightest (probably dangerous for me so I watch how much I drink!). The bartender was really friendly. He talked us through the menu and answered all our questions and we ended up having a nice chat about his band and folk music, a lovely surprise. I quite enjoyed my night at The Exhibit. It was busy and bustling but The Crush Bar was a little quieter; we were able to get a drink and a seat in relatively quiet surroundings as it's tucked away. This place didn't blow my mind, but if you are around Balham on a Friday night, this is definitely a good pit stop.

They boast 'Italian slow food fast and fresh' which pretty much sums it up, you pick your filling for a flat bread and they will serve it to you warm. I had the brie chicken and sun dried tomato one- it was simple and filling and cost just under a fiver. There are lots of other varieties on offer however, and I intend to return and try them. The roast vegetable one with speck sounds appetizing, as does the chocolate and banana one. I was warned against the egg one however. The space it's self is casual and a lot of Italians did seem to grace it!

I opted for the vegetarian feast tasting menu. Ay. Ay. Ay. Course #1: buncha' amazing chutneys served with crispy chips (mmmmmm ya, they were solid) Course #2 potato, plantain, aubergine fritters served with a chutney for each (least fav was the plantain, the aubergine with tomato chutney was great) Course #3 lil' bowls of greatness: mixed veggie curry, daal saag, mango yogurt (ah-may-zingggg) served with roti (paratha was a win), spiced potatoes Course #4 rice pudding (had a taste, but didn't eat the rest. Not their best work) Service was a little slow, as they were slammed and basically only had one waiter upstairs. Everyone was super nice tho. There was a bit of a lag between courses, but other than that, it was a great dining experience! I'd go back, no doubt.

Our waiter was incredibly friendly and was happy to help us with any questions. Our friends recommended this place and told us we had to try the Beet Cheera Pachadi and Parantha. We also ordered the Konju Manga Curry and Seafood Starter. It's definitely different from any Indian place I've tried but I'm still coming out of my American shell and making sure to order things other than the Chicken Tikka Masala ;) Both curry dishes (I think they were both curry) had incredible flavours. Sweet and subtle but nice hints of savoury from the shrimp. Both were also very different. The Beet option was the most unique and I really enjoyed it. I could have done without the starter but it was interesting to try the multiple items. The prantha though... holy crap that was amazing! It's like a flatter more sweet naan. We both gobbled it down. (I did just say gobbled.) We had to order two.

It seems that every place has its own take on the humble burger. They change the type of cheese,…read moredebate about whether or not to add pickle, or just throw pretty much anything on top. Some of the top shops start playing with the quality of meat and creating their own blends of chuck, sirloin, and short rib. And then you have Tongue'n'Cheek who have decided to celebrate some of the lesser known cuts of meat. In this case: ox heart. For those of you that enjoy the thrill of eating unusual meats, this is the burger for you. For those that don't, pretend it's just regular old beef and take a bite. After that first one, I guarantee you won't stop until it's all gone. And then you'll probably want to order another one. The star of the show here is the Heartbreaker burger. Not to be confused with the Heart Attack burger slung by some greasy shops in the US, this blend of ox heart and aged beef is juicy, full of beefy flavour, and incredibly tender. Combined with some spicy chimichurri sauce (a tad unusual for a burger) which brings both heat and some necessary acidity to cut through the rich marbling of the patty and then placed on a soft bun, this burger knocks it out of the park. Areas for improvement would be a better bun given the brioche and demi-brioche offerings of most of the best places which absorb more juices than a typical burger bun however I understand the difficulty of doing that when running a street food stall. I'd love a bit more crunch to it either by adding some thicker bits in the chimichurri sauce, some fresh lettuce, or a bit of bacon. Overall, Tongue'n'Cheek is giving the burger leaderboard something to think about and I'm going to award it the 3rd spot. Sorry Hawksmoor...you're number 4 now. Location wise...you find it where all good Eat St Traders are - mainly KX Blvd and London Street Feast although they did make an appearance at the International Food Festival at Southbank.

I had the Belly Connection because I really wanted to try their burger (but they had a cheese steak on special that looked massive and out of this world!) and I really couldn't decide between it and the original, but you can always sell me on pork belly and Gorgonzola. So have a burger, throw on the pork belly and Gorgonzola with some pickled onions and lettuce, and you're good to go. The burger itself was really juicy. Definitely pink bits in the middle, but I would have preferred it a bit more medium-rare. (However, maybe with the ox heart it needs a bit more cooking? Who knows?) There was so much juice that it piled up at the bottom of the paper they placed it in. And it was GOOD! Like super good. The only thing that let it down a bit was the bun. It's a bit dry and hard to bite through, but it doesn't deter from the tastiness of the meat. I'm definitely curious about the original now, as well as their pork sandwiches. And if they're doing the cheese steak again, that might be at the top of my list to try again.
