In the summers I get bored if I'm not active or pursuing something worthwhile, be it a feather in…read moremy cap or a notch on my belt, and it is precisely that very while, that I want to have weighted importance when it is not in purposeful use. I also get tired. I got tired of my heart skipping a beat every time my sweet baby daughter would cough, sometimes even more than once (the horror!), while sitting in her high chair at dinner, sending all of my anxieties into overdrive, dropping my own fork from my mouth (Is she choking? OMG!!! What do we do???-Call 911!!!) And it was this new parent anxiety fused with the aforementioned idle summertime boredom, that drove me to sign up for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course at the American Red Cross here in Shreveport. It is a daylong, hands-on course, that taught me to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age - adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). I also learned to properly operate an AED, or automated external defibrillator, should I ever need to do so, or be in proximity of one such device in the case of a medical emergency. At the conclusion of the course, I was awarded a certificate and certification in First Aid/CPR that's effective for two years. I highly recommend this course at your local American Red Cross to any new parent or grandparent, and really anybody who just wants to be an alert and responsible citizen! Overall, this course just gave me peace of mind. I know First Aid. I know CPR. I got this! No more freaking out! Yay! Classes run about $100.
