The museum has been here since 1931 and is filled with all kinds of interesting pieces from Washington Island's past. There are antiques, old tools, local artifacts and some outdoor displays, along with several small wooden buildings you can peek inside. My favorite part was seeing Jens Jacobsen's tiny summer cabin and some of the things he actually made himself. We also chatted with one of the volunteers, who explained some of what we were looking at and shared a little more of the history. I always enjoy places like this so much more when there's someone there who can tell you the stories behind everything. There's no charge to visit, and you don't need a ton of time. It's simply a cute, interesting little stop while you're driving around Washington Island -- and we're glad we found it!

The highlight of our visit was the docent. As we were the only customers there, she spent a good bit of time with us. I look forward to our next trip to the island, I'd like to talk to her again. She was a sweet person with the knowledge of an encyclopedia. Washington Island is a national treasure. This museum will help you understand why this is so. Cannot wait for our yearly trip (car and ferry or our own boat), as this island is like a cool foreign country. The museum is free; but we always donate a couple of bucks. You should, too.

I just attended this with a girlfriend. We had heard about it randomly and the only info we could…read morefind was a PDF flyer on their Facebook page. There is food, music, massage, painting en plein air, learning, pick your own, samples and shopping. Tips: 1. If you go, take the earliest car ferry from the main land that you can get. (4 hour wait if you don't) 2. Walk on the boat, don't take your car. 3. Pay the $7 for Lavender train ride and be prepared to wait around ALOT for the next train. I found this to be the most unorganized part of the festival. The boats ran every 20 min but the train sat around full waiting for no known reason. 4. Don't expect this to be a non stop activity laden festival. I think they want you to kick back and relax. 5. We spent approximately 4 hours and did/saw everything including lunch. It is not necessarily a full day activity, so plan to walk around the island or take one of their tours. 6. Bring cash and cards. I thought lunch was reasonable. $10 for a large green salad with chicken and dried cherries. $35 to paint en plein air and $50 for a massage. So get on the island early and relax in the fields of Lavender. See the whole island.

They said the second week of July is the time to see the lavender field in full bloom I'd love to see that. But even if you aren't there during that time stopping at the lavender field is worth the stop the smell in the shop is amazing. Lots of little lavender items to buy plus they have different chocolate some with lavender some without and some ice cream some of the lavender we tried the lavender ice cream which was Vanilla with a flowery aftertaste. You can definitely see if lit for free. I got to scoop because hey you're in lavender field why not? Good place to buy a souvenir to take home... Because he doesn't like lavender.
