All three are affiliated, but this one seems neglected in comparison to the other two, which are of very high quality. The Death's Door one is very small and does not have as many interactive exhibits or attention to upkeep (evident by the steps full of weeds that lead up to the entrance). The best part is the wooden fishing tug named "Hope" that was built in 1930; visitors can climb in and even steer the wheel. It would be super nice if this museum would have some of the features from the main Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay, such as the introductory overview video of Door County and the interactive high-tech exhibit that shows if the person behind the steering wheel is doing a great job or wrecking the boat. Fortunately the nice employee told us about the small privately-owned Island Clipper Ferry right beside the museum, and we took a wonderful ride through the Death's Door waters to Washington Island and back. That made it worth going all the way up to the top of the peninsula, but the museum alone would have not.

I didn't experience any paranormal activity but with the history and stories we were told I wouldn't doubt there is hauntings. If you are into history especially Wisconsin ghost stories then I recommend checking it out.

He was friendly, fun, and willing to take photos of all the groups for us. One of the stops on the trolley had cheese included which was a fun surprise! Upon entering Lautenbach's we were wowed with a wide variety of pies, baked goods, jams, wines, ciders, and other fun snacks. We sampled a few snacks before we made our way to the back where the wine and cider flights were happening. Hubby and I each had a cider flight. Staff were helpful and answered our questions. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day so we plopped ourselves on the patio to enjoy live music and our drinks of course. There were family friendly games outside which my child enjoyed.

In 1880, the Pioneer Schoolhouse was built. It was only half the size of the building that is standing today. Cordelia Burt was the first teacher in this school. She was paid $7 per week. Miss Burt had 33 students in grades 1 through 8. By the 1920s and 1930s, there were 45 to 68 students enrolled at the schoolhouse. The Goodletson Cabin was built approximately in 1855 on Eagle Island (now Horseshoe Island) by Norwegian immigrant Thomas Goodletson and his family. It was skidded across the ice in the 1860s to the foot of the bay near where the Ephraim Condominiums are now located. Thomas and his wife Kjesten had nine children. Many early meetings of the Bethany Lutheran Church were held in the cabin before the church was built in the 1880s. The Bethany Ladies Aid was founded in the cabin, and Mrs. Goodletson was the first treasurer. The Goodletson family lived in the cabin until the late 1800s.

A lovely little spot to learn about the history of lighthouses in Door County, and to enjoy a view…read moreif you are brave enough to climb up 97 stairs to the top. Deb climbed up and enjoyed the view from the lighthouse. For myself, my $12 admission fee was spent on touring the lighthouse keeper's cottage and enjoying the surrounding area. The grounds are well-maintained, just pretty as a postcard. The beach provided a lovely breeze on such a hot day. It is pretty much entirely made up of sharp seashells, so maybe don't attempt it barefoot. There is a short, rocky and uneven walk from the welcome center to the lighthouse. There is also a tractor with a trailer that can take people across, but to my understanding, it isn't always available. It was on the day we visited, but we opted to walk. The parking lot is pretty small. If you are visiting at a busy time, it might take a little while to find a spot. I think Cana Island Lighthouse is absolutely worth a stop if you are in the area.
