Once we were pass the gate, we used the map we were given to explore by car for awhile before deciding to park and walk to get the best view of the historic buildings and homes. One of the residents saw us and offered to show us around. We love history (my husband really loves military history) so we had a great time here because there is so much history. The map did a pretty good job of allowing us to see what the older buildings used to be during another era -- including the old commissary and an old barracks building.

We visit the town of Brackettville, (just across the street). Lowe's grocery, Post office, Subway, Valero gas station, Hunts Pizza, and so much more. Nathan at the RV park is wonderful. He is very accommodating. Whatever you need. The natural spring fed pool is so refreshing. 68 degrees all the time. We will continue to come back back for years to come.

This was our second visit to this place. First visit, we came in very early in the morning and the…read moreguard at the gate was very sweet to accommodate us at last minute and we got a hotel room. This time, we brought our RV. Our stay was equally nice. Very peaceful, quiet atmosphere. We saw beautiful deer roaming around, sometimes in large herds. This place is very family and pet friendly as well. "Susy " the office receptionist and "Kurt" the gentleman that runs Fort Clark are very friendly and helpful. If you love nature and the beauty of it, stop by here. They have RV spots and hotel rooms. Only thing is, there is no WiFi nor cable in the RV areas all other hookups are provided (water/electricity/sewer). There is walking trail, museum, fresh spring swimming pool, golf course, laundry area and daily activities throughout each month. Highly recommend !

We booked Chalk Bluff River Resort for Labor Day weekend after we weren't able to get a cabin at…read moreGarner State Park. My wife had visited Chalk Bluff as a child, so there was also some nostalgia involved in choosing it for our family trip. We arrived late Friday night and immediately got a sense of how crowded the resort was. The neighboring cabin's occupants were parked in our designated spot, although they moved without any conflict when we arrived. Their front door was also immediately adjacent to ours, making the cabins feel very crowded together. Throughout the resort, there seemed to be a large number of people staying at each site. We expected a rustic cabin, but ours had some significant maintenance and cleanliness issues. We killed multiple large cockroaches shortly after arriving. Several lights were burned out, with an oddly placed LED light apparently being used to compensate for the poor lighting in one area. The air conditioner seemed undersized for the cabin and was unplugged when we arrived. The bathroom was particularly problematic. The hot and cold shower controls were individual faucet-style handles, one of which didn't operate properly, making it extremely difficult to regulate the shower temperature. The toilet mechanism was also damaged and had to be manually reset between uses. After a hot first night, we spent Saturday tubing the Frio and bought a box fan on the way back to improve the airflow in the cabin. We decided to stay another night because we wanted to spend Sunday actually exploring the resort. There were some things the kids enjoyed. The animal area was fun, although the giraffe and longhorns weren't accessible during our visit. The playground was okay, and the sturdy two-person metal swings were a hit. The river itself is wide and tranquil with some nice deeper areas, although the water wasn't nearly as clear as what we'd experienced on the Frio. On Labor Day weekend it was extremely crowded, with tents and chairs lining the bank and even extending into the water. There was also quite a bit of drinking and smoking around us. We spent a few hours in the water while leaving our inexpensive soft-sided Buc-ee's cooler on a rocky area nearby. When we returned, the cooler was gone. We obviously can't say who took it or exactly what happened to it, but it was an unpleasant end to an already disappointing stay. At that point we decided we'd rather leave early, get a hot shower, and spend the night in a clean hotel. We explained to the staff that we were checking out early and why. There was no offer of a partial refund, and the response was essentially that we shouldn't come during a holiday weekend. I understand that Labor Day is going to be one of the busiest weekends of the year, and crowds themselves aren't the resort's fault. However, the condition of our cabin, inadequate cooling, bathroom maintenance problems, cleanliness issues, and our overall experience went well beyond simply being busy. Unfortunately, the nostalgia my wife had for Chalk Bluff didn't match our experience this trip. We checked out early and won't return. Based on our stay, I also wouldn't recommend it for families looking for a comfortable cabin-and-river getaway.
