Pit toilets, a fire pit and bench at each campsite, and a river, that's it for amenities. Jerome can't make a living on 30 diary and 50 beef cattle with his brother and wife working outside their regular 40 hour jobs to keep the farm going. "A thousand cattle farm nearby is closing, so how can anyone make it? There are no young people here." If you want to stay, just show up and let yourself in. The gate is never locked. Jerome doesn't have a cell phone or computer and usually isn't home to answer the landline phone. "I live in the Stone Age," says the guy with a stone barn on a stone bluff in a town named Rock. Jerome will find you before sunset when he makes rounds and collect payment then. $12 he said. I paid more. If you go, please tip him well. Castle Rock Park is across the river and a great place to hike. Snow Bottom SNA north parcel is minutes away and south parcel not many more. REM Castle Rock DNR land includes Castle Rock Park and park of Cedar Cliff across the highway. There's nothing to do in Castle Rock, and nowhere to shop. Come prepared. You won't have any traffic or neighbors.

The sand caves loop is an easy shaded hike perfect for hot days (with bug repellent). Driving down to the boat landing also give an interesting view from the fishing platform. We hiked along the trail that overlooked both the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. It was beautiful. Lots of interesting birds, plant life and history. There are many beautiful vistas and historic/ geographical plaques and markers to help explain the area. The flood marker at the boat launch was impressive. We were only here for the day but we could see how this is a popular place for camping. We understand in summer that the mosquitoes can be fierce - lucky we were here in May. We brought our picnic lunch to the far south end of the park at the Henneger Point picnic area and had it to ourselves. A very nice state park.

It has 11 miles of trails to check out. We did bridal veil falls trail and then Point Ann trail from the McGregor parking area. Other nearby attractions like effigy mounds national monument and local small town businesses. If you are from Iowa, don't forget to cross the river and grab some spotted cow beer from the town of prairie du chien in Wisconsin! They have a campground as well and river activities. Yellow river state park isn't far and is one of our favorites. Highly recommend for a vacation spot either for a day trip or multiple days to check out the surrounding attractions.

There's holes in the doors, weather strips to the front door missing with gaps big enough for mice! The layout is so bazaar, line when your 12 and have a sleep over and push everything together to build a fort! They say they renovated the whole place, but these rooms have clearly remained unchanged for decades. The beds themselves feel like blocks with basic training sheets and blankets. If you did not serve and therefore are unaware of how that feels...think dusty sandpaper. We are only here for two nights or I would dip and stay at literally any other motel. My favorite part was when we checked in and the "concierge" pleaded to us to just not break the furniture...that's not a good sign! This hotel is for you if plan to get wasted and use the room to crash...but my guess is it's a safe bet to leave the blacklights off!

We booked a double site as we had two RVs and multiple tents. It sure was plenty spacious! However, we all had noted it would have been great to see photos of the site when booking so we could know more that to expect. It was 100% full sun, and truly not chance for shade. Most other sites at this park had lots of tree coverage, which we would have loved and likely swapped to giving the chance. Being in a wide open space in the dead of summer can be tricky. The grounds are massive and well-kept, with tons of great hiking trails. Overall stunning views and vast green spaces. There's two large lakes with options to kayak, canoe, fish, ,etc. Concession stand with tasty ice cream, and a handful of convenience-store type items. Oh and we also definitely enjoyed the playground area with the kiddos. On the bad side: the shower-houses were pretty terrible. At least the one nearest to our site. It was to the point that half of us chose to forego showering all together just to avoid it. We also had a bummer experience at one of the beaches. We arrived around 10am and were all swimming for a few hours (along with tons of other visitors), when the rangers arrived and promptly closed the beach due to dangerous water bacteria. The closing wasn't the issue, but instead allowing 50+ folks to swim and fish in it before doing so. We'd all wished this water testing was done before the beach 'opened' for the day, as it left us fairly nervous having the quickly be rushed out. Overall, plenty of positives to this gorgeous state park - we made some great camping memories! Just hope those few shared pieces of feedback could help for future plans/changes.

We did not use any of their shower or laundry facilities this time, but everything looked neat and orderly. There are mature trees, so plenty of shade and grassy areas to play. There was also a playground as well as a pretty chapel. The couple checking us in were very kind and thorough with instructions. All of the utilities worked as expected, and the site was level as well. Can highly recommend this place if you're looking for a nice quiet peaceful place to camp. Total was $60/nite

This lovely little spot on the banks of the West Fork of the Kickapoo River offers lots of room for…read moretent camping, electrical hookups for campers and even two heated cabins suitable for 2-4 to share. There are hot water bathrooms complete with coin operated showers for the Mrs. too! So the campground is a popular home for trout fisherman out to enjoy the wonderful streams in this beautiful part of the state. Roger Widner who ran this place was a first of his kind force for cold-water preservation, restoration and landowner relations in the area. Sadly, he's recently passed away. If you take advantage of the local recreation resources, you may want to think about and give thanks for his efforts making the area what it is- he's sorely missed. With Roger's passing, the West Fork Sportsman's club had the duties of keeping up and running the campground. Changes are surely in store, I'll update this review as more is sorted out... In the mean time, Trapper, who lives right in the middle of town (on Trapper Rd) sells firewood and will be up to date on the campground logistics.

He wasnt built for long sun filled canoe days but when I called to get an early pickup they were understanding and they helped guide me to the nearest exit after spending a day and some change there.

And this year, they canceled on us due to high water from storms and REFUSED to refund us our money because we didn't purchase the "cancellation policy". But WE didn't cancel, THEY canceled on us due to weather. They kept 100% of our money for a trip we don't even get to take. Disgusting. They were incredibly rude about the situation, and putting the burden of uncertainty on the customer is a scummy practice. Basically told them they can make things right and refund our money and we will remain returning customers as we have been, and they told us to pound sand. Never EVER going here again, and I highly recommend using literally any other company than these slimy weasels.
