A friend and I went by van ride up to the launch in Wallowa and went forward into the wilderness of the Blue mountains. This is geologically beautiful country with magical rock formations thronged by big horn sheep - we saw a group of 20 that entertained us across the river at camp. The fishing was fantastic. Half of the fish were around 14 inches up to right around 20 inches. These are highly capable broad-shouldered fish. Captain Grant, Captain Bobby, and First Mate Callen capably led our expedition. The well-trained and yet affectionate dogs put a cherry on top. Highly recommended. I effing love Oregon. They have a rail ride too.

If you imagine it to be a gateway to hell, then that is…read moreexactly what it will be: grueling trails through rugged country, hostile heat and cold, intrusive plants and animals (poison ivy, ticks, rattlesnakes), and endlessly long and steep days followed by eternally long nights. If you approach it differently, with an open mind and an expansive heart, then Hells Canyon will be like the Iceland of the American West: beauty instead of brutality; green fields, verdant wildflowers, snow-topped ridges, and cascading mountain streams. Birds will sing and winds will blow; stars will shine brightly at night and you will stare in perpetual awe at one of America's most pristine wilderness areas. But the greater truth is that BOTH of these places exist - the Hells Canyon of nightmares, and the Hells Canyon of dreams. You simply have to find a way during your visit here to reconcile these opposing visions into an integrated whole. If you can do that - the beauty and and the beast coexisting happily together - then you will emerge from Hells Canyon a transformed person with a deeper sense of self and an enhanced appreciation for the diversity of the wider world in an appropriately sized package (750,000 acres, for starters). And if you can survive the ordeal, you will exit the canyon happier, heartier, and healthier than when you left - like Orpheus in the Underworld, except that in this particular case, you won't feel the need to look back. That, in essence, is what Hells Canyon means to me. And to you, if you are ready for the experience. May is the best of all possible months for visiting the canyon by foot or mule: you'll likely enter using Freezeout Trailhead (30 miles on asphalt and gravel roads from Joseph, OR), or Dug Bar, a long high-clearance road to the North (downstream). Bear in mind that the Idaho side of the canyon - the Seven Devils Wilderness - is still deep in melting snow, and is not accessible until the summer, so you'll need to enter from the Oregon side if you want to see the wildflowers and the impossibly green meadows that carpet the canyon in springtime. Plan for 3-5 days, choose the High Trail (#1751) as your main route, and don't descend to the Snake River unless you are prepared for thorns, poison ivy, and brush. Sluice Creek and Saddle Creek make good access points if you choose this path (Temperance Creek does not). If you are a first-time visitor, I'd recommend staying on the High Trail the whole time. Head up, down, and then North until you are tired, find a campsite, then return back over Freezeout Saddle when you have had your fill of what the canyon has to offer. The climb over Freezeout Saddle is epic: steep, switchbacked, with expansive views of the Seven Devils and of the distant Eagle Cap wilderness to the West. On a clear day, with lupines, Indian paintbrush, and arrowleaf balsamroot blooming, this is the most beautiful place you ever will see - as untouched and unvarnished a natural landscape as you are likely to find in the continental U.S. This is hard country. You need to be prepared. That "hell" part isn't a joke. But it's also America's grandest and most incredible canyon, end of story. If you are able to come, and it takes time, effort, and luck, then just do it! You'll emerge a different person than when you started, and that's something to treasure for years and decades to come.

This one unfortunately in Wallowa County. Brought my friends home to bachelor party in the county. Show them the local spots, summit mount Sacajawea and then have a good afternoon golf session at Alpine Meadows. We made it one hole before we turned back to the club house and demanded a $170 dollar refund. We called last week to get a tee time, set for 12 & 12:30, we came in early to give us a bigger cushion for a party of 5. We were told to split, so we did. Group of 3 & 2. Despite playing on schedule, on hole two in the middle of the fairway one of my party members was in the middle of his practice swing when the marshal, JD, rolled up in his cart and during the practice swing yelled "just hit the damn ball." (Loud enough for me to here on the tee box of 2, waiting to hit.) - apparently being on hole 2 at 12:20 with a 12:30 tee off time was too slow. My party member topped the ball and JD followed it up with "have you ever played before." Immediately this was followed by a verbal confrontation and attack from JD that resulted in us declaring "We're just here trying to have fun" "Well you're not making it fun." - JD We immediately went to the club house to get a refund knowing that the experience of the golf course is not about the golfers but the staff of the course, apparently. We failed to get a full refund after one hole but thankfully were able to get a partial refund. I'm disappointed that this experience does not represent the Enterprise and Wallowa county that I know.

While it's right in the center of town, there are a number of sites that offer great mountain views, along with the relaxing sounds of the Wallowa River rushing along the edge of the park can make you feel as if you are there all alone. We've stayed there 3 years in a row, and couldn't be happier. However, do note that they do not allow dogs. You might see a couple during your stay, but they are "grandfathered" in because the policy went into effect last year. Longtime guests with pets that have proven to be well behaved do have doggie rights. Personally, we love the policy. While we like dogs, too many un-trained pets and clueless dog owners have led to troubling incidents forcing the owners to exclude them. If you have a dog, skip this park. We've not stayed in the cabins on site, but they look to be very comfortable as well.

We caught a last minute opening to stay in the Cabin by the River. To be honest it's cabin-like but it's set up to be a meeting, maybe wedding, like venue, so I would clarify it's missing that charm. Nonetheless, it's hard to fault it for being too roomy. The setting is great, particularly the deck. It's a studio, but big enough my wife could sleep while I hung out and not wake her. I might lean 4 stars, but am going 5 because other complaints about this place do not justify the 1 Star rating, as few places here allow dogs, are no cheaper, and don't have grounds as nice or as well maintained, so my fifth Star helps balance.

It's not at all clear if they are even still in business. UPDATE: Talked to John, the owner, and they indeed moved the operation to Enterprise a year and a half ago. He suggested checking out (highly recommended) PSTC (Public Safety Training Center) in Clackamas. Although Enterprise is a long way from PDX, we do like it out in Eastern Oregon so if we wind up taking one of their training classes I'll update this review accordingly.
