The new principle Mr. Dyste gave me chills and watery eyes when he introduced himself and the vision he had for the future of both campuses the beginning of this year. What made me never question another school has been the friendships and overall community my kids have experience the past years. Now that mixed with the changes and improvements the current staff has made it truly has cultivated an amazing learning and continuously growing establishment. This is my first year being on the parent volunteer networking group and I love this group of parents! I entered the first meeting super nervous but with this personable group of people after 20 minutes we all felt very comfortable. Lauren, the head of the PVN is so cool , full of creative and clever ideas. The school events are so epic and it's because of her and the team on the PVN. The school is small, but that is what we wanted. It guarantees Mr. Dyste, Mr. Tony, Mrs. Martinez and Mr. Kevin a close eye on all of the teachers and students. It has always been a 5 star school but it's definitely exceeding 6 on its way to 7!!!

I started my own business and have done well for 40+ years. As to the fact that it is an "all boys school" that simply meant, less distractions. Sports are huge at Saints and a big part of most students life, from watching to participating. Worth the money? I would say definitely YES! Discipline, morals, ethics and fantastic Three R's. very worth a look. Take a tour and you will be pleasantly satisfied.

He likes the fact German is once a week as well. He did take the DSD recently. AfterStein is a huge plus! So many different activities from board games to Bob Ross Painting to D&D! My son and friends enjoy chess. They have received a positive response as to starting a chess club for AfterStein. They were told tentatively yes if and when they have a teacher for the class to monitor. There are 2 drop off locations (front and back). I will say the front drop off gets much more congested.

Their rally was peaceful and organized. The chaos came entirely from two student aides, Ms. V and Ms. Rita, who were on the steps with a group of kids they had gathered. These students were not standing there to protest. They were only trying to get out of the rain, and the aides turned them into an angry mob holding signs. My daughter had to squeeze past the aides and the group of kids they created just to get to the car. She looked confused and anxious, asking why these adults were shouting at Ms. Blackman, her former fifth grade teacher, and at the other teachers who were peacefully holding the rally. She could not understand why Ms. V and Ms. Rita who are supposed to protect and guide students were the ones escalating the situation and involving kids who clearly did not choose to be part of any of this. Because of what I witnessed and how shaken my daughter was afterward, we have decided to pull her out of AEA at the end of the semester. No parent should have to watch their child feel scared or confused because school staff chose to involve students in an adult conflict. My daughter kept talking about it the entire ride home, she did not understand why the very people who are supposed to look out for kids were yelling and stirring things up. At that point, it became clear to us that this is not the environment we want her in.

I am not reviewing the institution (I overly pass the high school years, but those years left great memories, as I am sure this cool urban high school so close to Balboa park has left to many generations, as is the oldest one in San Diego). Since I have a close friend living very close by, many Saturday or Sunday mornings we go running around the area, specially in the basketball courts, that seem to be opened to the public. I like to see people playing squash (or similar, maybe here is called differently, it was a popular sport in Europe during the early 90s) as well as take pictures of the San Diego skyline from there. It just gives a very different perspective. Plus, there is barely people around, you feel kind of isolated in the middle of the town. Another of my favorite activities is just watch planes coming to East to West reading to land at the airport. There is abundant parking lot, but I usually go walking from my friend's place on Park Boulevard.

I did bring it up to SDUSD Officials throughout my daughter's 2 years at this school. Sadly, there was no response, nor improvements in the Infrastucture, administration, nor support resources. We are happier at another school with better everything now.

So, he started his new school in the middle of the school semester. He started his new high school year behind from the start. They placed him in a cram course that allowed him to catch up. When he caught up, they threw him in regular classes and he became frustrated. From then on he had some difficulties adjusting to his new school. I called the counselor and also spoke to the Asst. Principal for help. I never had the chance to meet with the principal, because he was always at a meeting. They gave me the run around. My son asked me for help, and I tried to get the help from the school. No one would listen. This was at San Ysidro High School. It was a brand new school at the time, yet the staff was terrible. I tried to transfer him to a different school, but could not. So, my family decided to move out of Southbay. His new school was San Diego High School. But, this school was now in session. I figured he would fall behind again and go the same path as he did at San Ysidro. So, I found San Diego Charter School of San Diego. Our plan was to have him catch up in credits and attend San Diego High School for the next year. Anyways, It was an independent study program, but you also attend 4 hours a day in a classroom in Horton Plaza. My son was catching up. He was doing well, until his teacher misplaced his homework file. The teacher asked him to do 3 classes over again. My son became frustrated again. I became frustrated. My son regressed from then on. He lost interest in school and stopped trying. He had no motivation and asked if he could drop out. He wanted to wait until he turned 18 and go for his GED. I made an appointment to meet with the counselor and she never called back. I called his teacher and found out that he quit on the spot. I found out that my son had no teacher for a while and the help were the teacher assistants. SO, I went on my school search again. I met a really great counselor at San Diego High School. He told me that my son could start second semester, but would be behind. He then mentioned Garfield High School. I looked it up on the internet. But, I found this young mans profile, instead. It was a brief bio of his life. He was a very smart kid, but got lost in the school system. He wrote that he found Garfield High School's Oracle Program. He stated that his life changed after that and now he is working on his Masters Degree in Psychology. This was inspiring. I decided to search for this school. I called Garfield High School. They told me about Oracle. My son had to pass a placement test. He passed and was accepted to the program. He started his senior year, but only had the same amount of credits as a sophmore. He started the school a little depressed. To make a long story short, his teacher is excellent. She will not give up on the kids here. My son is now only a semester behind in graduating. He is motivated and his self esteem is higher than before. He is looking into college now, rather than the GED. He has had some rough times and struggled, but his teacher never stopped pushing him. She saw his potential and she continues to keep her faith in him. I am so grateful that she came into his life and that this Oracle program exists. Everyone there is nice and the receptionist is great too. I cannot say anything negative about this school. It is the best thing that happened to my son. It helped me too! Mrs. Brisky is her name! The greatest teacher that my son has ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!! She listened to me and she listened to my son. She never ignored us and made sure that he would get back on track!!!! If you have a child in high school that is struggling, please look into this school. This is a great place for a high school teen that needs the extra push and would enjoy a non-traditional school. You work at your own pace, but at the same time have a deadline. There is independence, you can work at home, but you can also go on campus for more structure. So, far I am extremely pleased and I will definately update his graduation status this summer. ****updated. He completed all of his credits and graduated! He went to college and is Majoring in Interactive Media Design and Animation

I think that they take away from how useful the whole review is. I'm upset by it because it is simply not true. My daughter goes to KC High School and I can tell you all that the admin and office teams do run the school very well. They have a sports program, they've won their soccer league twice in a row now, in 3 years they have 450 students, all Juniors do down town internships - one of the girls did an internship in the Mayor's office and took a call from the White House! They are working with students from BArrio Logan and Sherman Heights and yes the students have obstacles, but they are doing well, learning, gaining work experience etc. The school just got a WASC visit and did well - don't you think WASC is a better judge than that last person? WASC were very impressed! Uneducated staff? All of them have degrees and are accredited as teachers - what is that last person talking about? I am very happy with my daughter being at KCHS - by the way they have 95% daily attendance, compared to low 70s% for other local district high schools. Doesn't that tell you how good the school is? King Chavez is a very good little school whose staff loves its students and they are getting some great success as they are now almost a full four year high school with students heading to college. As the principal says, just come by and check it out without appointment, they are so confident of what they do. Vamos Vaqueros!

Very easy coursework, troubled students, uneducated staff, fires their good staff, etc. I think they have good intentions, big dreams and few great teachers, but I will NOT bet my kid's future on it. This school was just starting out when I enrolled my gifted child there for 9th grade. They gave us the impression this school was pushing children to go above and beyond traditional schools - yeah right. My child was hospitalized and they gave her several in-completes for classes like gym that she missed while in the hospital for several months. They were extremely disorganized and had no idea how to handle her situation. Now, over a year later, the situation is the same. Now, this star student that is on the Principal's List and had a 4.0, now has a 2.5 for that year and is still missing credits needed to graduate. I will be enrolling her into a different school. Let's just hope her credits transfer.
