He has a high regard for his classmates, teachers, & SAY instructors. His vocabulary has grown exponentially since starting as well as as his physical development has been on track! All this culminates to his ability to have self control for longer stretches. The classmates he has are all supportively each other. The jobs the teachers give the children help each focus or stay engaged in each's particular way. Let's just say We are Ecstatic for our son to be at AEA!

Our experience with a kindergartener. --The school experienced much upheaval last year when the beloved Principal of over a decade, was fired, no explanation given. She was just "gone". -- the school makes it very difficult to have informal conversation with a teacher. Parents are not allowed inside the gates, so they rarely have the opportunity to have a casual "check in". This makes for a very impersonal relationship and lacks fluidity between school and home. -- If you're interested in the 50/50 German immersion, last year the SDUSD approved a change in the charter, which alters how German will be taught, and how often. The German teachers are the best-- they hold that school together, but who knows now that changes to the school charter have been made, exactly how much input they will have -- the uniform code is ridiculous, and enforced sporadically. Our kinder wore the wrong colored skirt on the second day of school and she was sent to the office to change . A simple note home would have been far more preferable than to frighten and humiliate a five year old in a new school -- this is a minor point, but one to consider. If you're picking your child up in the afternoon, plan to be in the pickup line for 20-30 mins, occasionally longer. Their drop off/pick up system is highly inefficient. --Our child was hit with a basketball, not once, but twice in the head by accident, by an older child. No msg from the teacher, school nurse, nothing the first time. The second time the hit was hard enough to cause a nosebleed, and she was sent to the office, but still no note from the teacher. --The instruction was "all over the map". Homework packets were sent home, rarely was it ever checked, some lessons were turned in that required the child to explain their homework to the class, but the teacher never acknowledged their work. This certainly sends the wrong message. Parents of kinders were told that homework was "optional". Also, at the beginning of the year, at orientation our child's kinder teacher announced that she would be attending every soccer tournament, ballet or piano recital-- to our knowledge she never attended a single one. There is massive building expansion going on at the school. With quality already at an abysmal level, adding more children does not seem to be a good direction for the school to go. --This is not to disparage all of the teachers at AEA, but our child's kinder experience fell far short of expectations. She is now in a different school and has already participated in several back to school events that have brought exuberance towards school, and helped ease the transition of being in a new school environment. I would definitely not recommend AEA, San Diego.

Cons: a lot of this staff seems as though they're doing the absolute bare minimum to get through each day in order to collect a pay check. TK teacher gives out candy every single day as a motivator for 4 year olds and will argue with you about it if you ask her not to give your child candy. "I have 18 other students." The first week of school she said "your son is so smart. I will make sure to give him work for his level." I never heard anything about that again, we never received one worksheet for homework. Not even abcs or days of the week. If you look at her class page, she never even updated it past the third week of school. TK teacher uses television daily to keep kids occupied. My son mentioned to me that she plays paw patrol. Why paw patrol? That's not even educational. TK -1st grade stores their lunchboxes and water bottles outside instead of in cubbies in the classroom (and it's been 80 degrees outside daily). Meanwhile, the teachers have a nice air conditioned lounge with fridges to store their food in and dine in. (Which I've had to wait inside before during my son's assessment) Cafeteria has no air conditioning. Principal will ignore your emails and then say hi to you every day afterwards like nothing happened. We had an assessment with the kindergarten teacher the week before school and she was coughing, sneezing etc with no mask on and had her snot filled tissues on the table right next to my son. Needless to say, our entire family got sick for the first week of school. So my son had to go to his very first day sick with a mask on. She determined that he was at a "4th or 5th grade reading level" but said "there's nothing I can do for him". The school didn't even make an effort. She also said she would connect us with the OT to get him an assessment for behavioral therapy. We never heard anything about it again afterwards. No playground, no grassy areas, no trees on campus. There is only asphalt and a piece of astroturf. It looks as though there's a playground attached to the school from the outside, but it is not used by the school. I agree with another google review that said this place needs an upgrade. And some staff definitely needs to update their educating style instead of clearly dragging through every day, counting the minutes until their retirement. The kids deserve better

The heart of the academic program is a dual immersion concept where students spend half the day learning in Spanish and half the day learning in English. Dare I say that this is a superior model and fairer to English language learners than the total Spanish immersion at certain magnet schools with huge waiting lists? Sherman is a neighborhood school and the student body has a very high proportion of English language learners from poor families. Nonetheless, the sense one gets from visiting the new campus is one of wholesomeness. Indeed, the students' exuberance for learning is matched by the evident commitment of their family members to their kids' education. The teachers, all hand-picked by the forward-looking principal who championed the dual immersion concept with the district, seem deeply committed to the educational mission. One hang-up: The administration seems a bit disorganized due to being in start-up phase. I hope these issues take care of themselves in the next year as they find their groove.

They have been taught not only the basic academics, but also how to be a good human in this crazy world, and how to lean on community and their peers to grow and become educated. I have felt like the teachers have always kept the individual student in mind, and advocated it on their behalf for all of their needs. While some teachers and staff were nice or at least professional, some completely disregarded the students feelings. At the time I was going through a rough time and would often have issues with getting into trouble for 'skipping class' when I was crying in the bathrooms. When someone came into the bathrooms to get me, the office workers would tell I couldn't leave class or just not go, regardless of what was happening, unless it was some sort of 'real' emergency like medical. This part I'm not proud of. I got suspended multiple times for coming to school high, and there were a few times I had to leave because of hurting myself and getting caught with a blade to do so. Eventually of course I was told to leave, and while I know I could've prevented this, I also know I turned to these bad coping mechanisms because nobody was listening and trying to help me. When I was kicked out from the school the principal, Mr. Taylor, yelled at me and cussed, saying I was 'past the point of helping' and that I was hopeless. While I did do some things that I shouldn't have, students should be talked to properly and not yelled at for things they can't help like mental health issues. Many of my other friends experienced similar issues.
