I've been coming to this place for about 3 years. On its best day this place is a 2.5, maybe 3 star…read moresort of place. I mean, I get it. They have a facility - at a low rental price point - in a city where such space is really valuable. The following are three things that have ensured that I won't be taking my business there again: 1. Cheap vs. low cost: You get what you pay for kind of place. Nickle and diming on league play with their $20 membership card that is NEVER checked. Questionable referees. One of the turf fields is barely turf. Feels like you're playing on concrete so careful with knees and ankles. The place feels just feels like they don't really have any interest in putting any money into maintaining it. Cheap. 2. Rundown vs. spartan: To say that the facility is bare-bones is pretty gracious. I mean, you don't really need much, but in the winter it's not really heated, the water (not just fountains, but bathroom sinks and toilets) were broken for like a month - that was awesome, especially with a 5 year old kid... I've already mentioned that one field... 3. Rude, unprofessional, and just kinda mean :\ You know, the reason we all put up with it was because we understood that this was the kind of place you just came and played and left with no real expectation for much else. Fair enough. The proverbial feather on the camel's back was this week when - because of their administrative error or confusion - they accused me of GOING OUT OF MY WAY to be a "nuisance" to them when my weekly pick-up didn't book on the new year's weekend. The reason we didn't show up was because we never planned to be there that day because, well, it was new years... On the phone with Juan (who I imagine is a manager?), he told me that we intentionally did it to cause them distress. Didn't really understand why they would assume that this was our motivation considering we've never been late to pay, have always called ahead, shown up, etc... On top of this, his tone was a bit inflammatory as if he were doing me the favor of letting us patronize their facility. Anyway, it was pretty clear these guys aren't interested in cultivating relationships with organizers like me (I run a weekly pickup with a pool of over 60 players), so I'm on the hunt for a new place that will appreciate my patronage and doesn't treat me like the poorly maintained grounds and equipment they find themselves in. I've noticed that I'm not the first pickup group or league to leave this facility because of similar reasons.

Downside is the facility and the management. If there is a rainstorm, the roof will leak and potentially flood the fields like it did the past few weeks. Their electronic scoreboards haven't been working properly for years. You cannot tell if there are 3 or 8 minutes left. Now their main turf field scoreboard isn't working at all. They used to have two for it, now they have none. I hope it comes back after the facility dries out from the flooding over the past two weeks but regardless, it wasn't working properly to begin with. As for the management, we signed up to play here for a Saturday men's league in May 2009. Only two teams, one being ours, joined the league. We made a $185.00 deposit. The league never happened and since that time I have been trying to get our deposit back. Management does not respond at all. The only reason I play there is because the league I am in now is run by an outside group called FSSG. They are legitimate and run the league perfectly. So other than the location, I wouldn't play here if it wasn't for FSSG.

Being a local I know all about Trum Field. You got softball, baseball, basketball and soccer (I…read morethink). All ages and all levels. The renovations gave us a beautiful pavilion and well kept much needed bathrooms. 4th of July celebrations occur on the Thursday before the 4th. The police shut down that section of Broadway to all cars and the area gets packed with people. They have street vendors selling balloons and glow sticks, fried dough, pizza and other normal fair food. All leading up to what I believe is a great fireworks show in the Ville. Added bonus- it's like a mini reunion seeing so many people that I grew up with...

A single climbing structure sitting on a woodchip area. It's in good condition and seems to have been built/installed very recently. There are 2 toddler swings, 2 big kid swings. The highlight was definitely the sprinkler. It basically involves a push button that activates a sprinkler set in the ground that shoots straight up. The sprinkler consists of 5 mini-steams, so its good if your kid wants to put his/her hand in it. The other nice thing is that the sprinkler area is fairly well shaded, so I could see it being good for really hot days. My biggest complaint of the park is the surrounding area. It feels like an industrial area with the Somerville City Offices right next to it. There's a busy street next to the park that is trafficked by many large trucks. Also the train tracks are right next to the sprinkler area, which can be awesome if your kid is into trains (which thankfully Capt. K is) or kind of scary if they're not into loud noises. So to summarize, it's a serviceable park with a sprinkler located in an area that isn't aesthetically pleasing. As parks with sprinklers become a necessity in the hot days of summer, I'll be adding Trum Playground to the rotation for the sake of variety. But it's not really a "destination" playground.
