Because all the food here is stunningly beautiful and everything sold is from the earth. I don't recall anything animal, or anything processed. No breads. No cheese. Certainly no bacon pajamas. Just basket after basket of stunning fruits, veggies, roots, berries and legumes. Here we are in November, when most green grocers only have root veggies and cabbage, yet this place boasts vibrant peppers, heirloom tomatos, exotic fruits, even Asian citrus. I love to cook and this is now my "go to" place for hard-to-find greens. In fact, Natalie Portman will be sorry she ever went for a different fellow and shacked up in the States. And if you just want to show up and eat, there were 5-6 vendors selling sausage rolls, burgers, chicken, pulled pork/beef sandwiches, plus French stews. While there are much bigger/well known weekend markets in London, I think this is the best example of a local one that is mostly focused on farmers, fisherman, bakers and butchers - but that also has a lot of stalls where you can eat something really nice. Nobody is selling overpriced jars of stuff or catering to massive crowds. This is a market where you can discuss how the cheese is made with the person who made it.

Portobello Wholefoods is tucked away in a dark corner under the railway bridge, at weekends you barely notice it. During the week it provides the perfect addition to the fruit and veg stalls along Portobello Road. They stock everything you'd expect from a decent health food store at OK prices. One of the highlights for me includes the large selection of loose teas; I'd be lost without my fix of vanilla or mango tea in the morning! Also, I've met a lot of different staff and they are all eager to help with their wealth of knowledge on all things healthy. It's probably a tad more expensive to shop here, so you should stick to getting your more mundane items such as dried fruit from the supermarket, but for something a little bit special it's perfect. Why not try the gelatin free raspberry jelly or the fortified mineral water (you take your own bottles to fill and pay by the litre). Another great idea is that they don't automatically give you carrier bags at the till. There are a few used ones available if you really need one, but why not follow their lead and bring your own canvas bag to fill up.

They'll remember your name, recommend the best cuts, and even tell you the best way to prepare the meat. 2. This farm has the highest organic rating you can get. The animals are all pastured, fed the best food, and treated as humanely as animals can be treated before you eat it. Imagine sheep wondering through an open field, chickens laying eggs outdoors in the grass. It's how animals should be raised AND it's better for you. 3. The meat is just delicious. You can't even compare it to that high street grocery store that passes plastic for chicken. I have never had chicken so tasty, steak so tender, or lamb so juicy. Plus, they sale organic bacon and well priced eggs I am a frugal person, but will pay extra to buy meat that is better for me and for the environment. Tip: their burger patties are the best I've ever had and only 1.50. Also, their spicy lamb sausage makes for an easy and quick week night meal.
