Our two daughters have been attending United Family Taekwondo since the summer of 2021, and the…read moregrowth we've seen in both of them has been incredible. They both started as white belts and are now black belts. Our oldest is now a 2nd Degree Black Belt and serves as a Junior Instructor. Through her journey at UFT, we've watched her confidence, discipline, and character grow tremendously. Master Kim, Master Daniel, and Grand Master Lee have all been such positive influences in her life. It makes us so proud to see her continue pushing forward while also giving back by helping younger students learn and grow. Beyond self-defense, United Family Taekwondo has helped her develop self-esteem, confidence, endurance, perseverance, and a strong sense of self-worth. These are invaluable life skills that will continue to benefit her for years to come. Our youngest daughter is now a black belt as well. She started when she was only 5 years old and has come such a long way. In the beginning, she struggled with paying attention in group settings and required one-on-one instruction. Master Kim worked patiently with her individually to help her catch up and build confidence. Today, she is sharp, confident, funny, and absolutely loves going to TKD. She also loved being part of the after-school care program with Ms. Jen, during the time when we needed after-school care. As parents with a very busy schedule, we truly feel the time and money invested in training at UFT has been more than worth it. Our children have gained so much more than martial arts skills -- they've learned respect, discipline, confidence, and strong core values. Above all else, the Masters and Grand Master Lee consistently teach students to love, respect, and honor their parents, each other, and others. Teachings like these are rare nowadays. We recently extended both of our daughters' contracts for another two years because they genuinely love being there, and that alone speaks volumes about the environment UFT has created. Thank you to all of the instructors at United Family Taekwondo for your dedication, patience, and hard work. We are truly grateful for everything you do!

All have been very professional and inspiring/motivating to my 6yr old girl. She loves going. We joined with a special they were having, then they notified us when our days covered under the special were about to be over. They gave a paper with different pay plan options (pre-pay full year, month/month, three-month commitment, etc) if you so choose to continue. They have 3 rooms they rotate the class through, each with it's own focus. I love this place. The only downside for me is that of the 5 instructors, only 1 speaks English as a first language, and 1 other instructor is ok speaking English. The other 3, I feel like I need a translator. I understand tae kwon do has Korean roots, however... Being a business in a city where English is spoken dominantly, bilingual instructors should be a priority. Especially when yearly commitments equal over $1k. I would feel more comfortable knowing I can have clear communication with the instructors/owner.

The facility is very spacious, with large mirrors along one wall that make the studio feel even more open and professional. I learned that Master Kim is a 7th-degree black belt, and that his brothers also operate schools in other cities. Their focus goes beyond martial arts training to emphasize discipline, leadership development, and strong character building. What stood out most was Master Kim's genuine heart for the community. He actively supports local schools, book fairs, and even cancer patients through donations and outreach. The after-school program is especially helpful for families, providing care and structure for students after their Taekwondo lessons. Master Kim also makes a special effort to support students from below poverty level families by offering opportunities they might not otherwise have. In addition, he runs an intensive summer program from May through July, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which reflects a deep commitment to both education and mentorship. Master Kim's passion for Taekwondo, dedication to community service, and commitment to developing leadership in young students are truly exemplary. This is clearly one of the long-standing martial arts studios in Duluth, and it left a very strong and positive impression.

And don't give me the crap that it was grappling since you do not smack your opponent on their rear end multiple times. Not to mention the fact this is a taekwondo School if you want to behave like that you don't need to do it in front of the entire demo team I did not sign up my child to be completely traumatized by some woman who can't keep it in her pants. first she's brings her boyfriend to kiss all over last year now she's found another who is basically the same age as the students and still cannot manage to be professional or even decent. I am appalled that her behavior has continued unchecked for so long. If I have my way my child wouldn't be there her mother seems to think this is a good school but I'm my opinion it is not safe for children to be there. That woman spends more of her time trying to get every one to ogle her backside than actually training the students. I don't know what the owner is thinking or if he just doesn't care about the schools reputation nor the students there. Do yourself a favor and either go to a different Kim brothers or better yet a completely different school. You want to be called a master but have no idea how to lead by example, you have zero self respect let alone professionalism, you are not a master, you are a grifter. I can't remember the last time I actually saw the advanced belts even learning anything as she just has them teaching the class for her, I doubt she is capable of leading a class effectively and correctly for the entire time. What an absolute disaster and disappointment for a school that was once thought so highly of

The one negative I could see about this place is the restroom can get pretty rough and so a bit odoriferous but aside from that the taekwondo dojo is clean and well kept. The prices are reasonable and I have heard good things about their after school program and group classes. I have been a student of his private class where I have been able to train one on one with Grandmaster Song. Parking is plentiful and as a final point I want to say that Grandmaster Song is very skilled at developing discipline and helping students from all walks of life. 5 Yelp stars for sure. GENERAL ASSESSMENT Our overall assessment is that Shaolin…read moreInstitute does an amazingly successful job fulfilling its promise as a learning experience for both the body and mind. As we have so far experienced it, Shaolin Institute indeed teaches a "way of life" in which students can experience gratifying physical achievement, whether in Tai Chi or Kung Fu, while also exercising and expanding mindfulness. One of the most appealing aspects of Shaolin Institute is the frequent reference before and after classes regarding how specific cultural, historical, medical, and scientific achievements are directly relevant for learning and appreciating martial arts. TEACHING ASSESSMENT It is impressive that Shaolin Institute exceeds expectations in basically every category used to evaluate teachers. Below are our summaries of Shaolin Institute's multifaceted teaching strengths. CURRICULUM * SI teachers follow the SI curriculum. * SI teachers choose activities for each student relevant to the SI curriculum and each student's level of achievement. * When feasible, SI teachers sometimes helpfully group students together to learn and practice as a group the forms they have previously learned. INSTRUCTION * SI teachers provide direction so that each student knows what to focus on during class. * SI teachers present new forms clearly and logically, and helpfully demonstrate new forms. * SI teachers provide feedback and re-teach forms when necessary. Teachers provide opportunities for students to practice new forms both with and without supervision. MOTIVATION * SI teachers show genuine concern for the students. * SI teachers project a positive, encouraging tone for the classroom experience. * SI teachers establish a level of difficulty, suited for each student's level, which encourages success. SI teachers provide good verbal praise, as well as critique as needed. COMMUNICATION * SI teachers always demonstrate enthusiasm in what they are teaching. * SI teachers explain and demonstrate forms clearly. * SI teachers respond graciously and substantively to questions. EXPECTATIONS * SI teachers communicate expectations to students. * SI teachers listen to students' feedback during class and adjust their teaching pace and content accordingly. * SI teachers encourage students to participate inextracurricular community opportunities, which isimportant for the students' confidence as well as the school's exposure. METHODOLOGY & MATERIALS * SI teachers often vary how they conduct classes, for example by describing the forms, including their origins, applications, etc., and/or by physically demonstrating the forms. Both methods are helpful, especially for students who learn in different ways. * SI teachers sometimes provide supplemental resources, such as video recordings of the classes, which can be exceptionally helpful for students who want to practice at home. EVALUATIVE ACTIVITIES * SI teachers monitor and give feedback on student progressduring each individual class. * SI teachers give oral evaluative comments, as well as sometimes grades or scores. * SI teachers are available for and sometimes proactively create opportunities for one-on-one progress discussions with students. CLASS ENVIRONMENT * SI teachers clearly communicate requirements for attitude and behavior, notably by emphasizing the SI student creed and the rituals of class beginnings and endings. TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTIONS * SI teachers make an effort to know each student as an individual. * SI teachers routinely work to promote positive self-image in students. * SI teachers routinely create a classroom climate in which students are encouraged to grow and assume personal responsibility for their growth. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR * SI teachers are observed routinely cooperating graciously with their teaching peers, demonstrating authentic respect for one another. * SI teachers are often observed sharing ideas and methods with their fellow teachers. * SI teachers are observed regularly seeking to advance their own growth. This continuing education, observed by the students, is motivating to the students and demonstrates how we are all learning and growing.
