They specialize in game and the window is full of yummy looking homemade pies. I've yet to try one, but I'm betting they're delicious. The owners are really friendly and are diligently there, open early, every time I pop in to pick up sausages for a Saturday morning brunch. The sausages are really worth the trek up the hills...they have a brilliant variety-I highly recommend the chipolatas. In fact, they have everything you need for a really delicious breakfast...organic meat, bakery bread, free-range eggs and locally pressed apple juice....mmm, Archers is one of the establishments I miss most from my days living in Hanover. Every time I pop up to Archer's, there's a little queue of locals picking up milk or eggs, whilst enjoying a friendly chat with the proprietors. It's really refreshing to see an independent ethically-minded business being supported by its community! If you're an avid carnivore and want to know where your meat is coming from, this is the place for you.

I feel it always takes time to get to know local owners but these guys have more banter than a bantersaurus rex so will chat with anyone. I second Sophie on the quality of the food and I can't put it any better than her so read her review. However, just to add that they have received a 5 star award from the Brighton & Hove City Council which you do not see very often.

The butchers are very friendly, know their stuff and seem to like questions and recommendation requests. These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

The guys at the veg stalls shouting 'PAND A BANANAS' with their cockney accents, the vibrant global stores selling tropical food and fresh spices . Those were the days when Queens Market use to be eclectic and full life. 18 years later and Queens Market is now Queens Ghetto. I feel let down =( She has lost her charm and I've lost a part of my childhood. Right at the front of the market you're greeted with one BIG massive stall that sells S & M lingerie. I remembered walking past there once and witnessed a poor little boy ogling at the mannequins goodies. There are stores in there that you would find at any high street and there's tons of pounds shops (most probably to fill in the spaces). Queens Market only has a few good stores left like the Asian, African, Caribbean and the fish and chip shop. The awkward scent of rotten fish & meat will stick to your nasal passage for awhile. She has lost her unique east London edge. I'm sure many have fond childhood memories at Queens..have you seen our childhood?

Goodies include the haberdashery stall - highly competitive prices and very valuable with the increased interest recently in dress making. There are numerous fabric stalls and a first rate curtain shop with some very good quality fabrics, tracks, swags and rails. The weekly vegetable shopping is economical with an excellent selection of fruit. It certainly isn't littered with pound stalls but there is a range of hairdressing and cosmetic shops selling very reasonably priced human hair extensions and accessories. The market and Green Street is the only place in Newham that we still shop. It has a unique charm without hordes of dreary clone shops.
