His many years working with roses, and 20 years with David Austins particularly, make him an expert on choosing, growing and caring for these roses and the other rare roses he offers for sale at his Nursery in Petaluma. Many of our members have bought roses and garden products from ED Wilson and have enjoyed his expertise in helping us to grow more beautiful rose gardens. The best finds are unexpected, joyous surprises which so perfectly describes "E D Wilson Roses, Oddities & Amazing Things" that it might as easily be their tagline. Yes, it'd be a mouthful, and it's probably unnecessary in that they already sport a highly descriptive, apt moniker. Anyhow, this place is just wonderful. I'd even call it aspirational. As I wandered the open-air back of the shop, I suddenly had a revelation for what to do with my personal backyard space. Pebbles and wooden runners made a perfect landscape in which to showcase the plants while creating a through-line through a space. Between the fountains, bird feeders, trees, roses, florals, and garden tchotchkes it was both aspirational and inspirational. I left with a Coleus, 2 packs of Botanical Interests seeds to grow both Gourmet Baby Greens and Upland Cress Microgreens, a contraption to cover fruit and vegetable plants in my existing garden (to keep birds and insects from enjoying things before me), and two tubes of Sister Bees Lip Balm at 50% off. E D Wilson is a perfect place to know about if you need to get someone a gift and doing so would demonstrate your creativity, your thoughtfulness, your cool factor, and your commitment to sustaining small businesses. Being polite as a shop owner is crucial to the survival of your store. I remember when this store opened a few years back. At the time, I was extremely excited to have a local garden center that supplied David Austin English roses. On my first visit the owner, Eugene, was friendly and helped me select some border plants for my garden. On my second visit I asked for a recommendation of an organic black spot and fungal treatment for my roses. He brought me to a small shed at the far edge of the property where he gave me a bottle of a BioAdvanced Rose & Flower care... for $35.00. I trusted he knew the best product per my ask, and at the time I was in the early stages of learning about organic gardening. Little did I know that the same product could be purchased online for $20.00. This in addition to the markup he has on David Austin roses made me rethink my appreciation of the local garden shop. His prices for David Austin roses are $45.00, when you can purchase direct from DA for $35. These two strikes kept me away for a while, until today. Walking home from the American Graffiti car show I stopped in to see what was new. I entered the store front, which was empty of staff and walked towards the outdoor garden area. I am in the market for large planters for my, ahem, David Austin roses - I have 35 in my collection. There were a few planters I liked on display so I took some photos to show my husband when I got home. As I was exiting, the owner came out back and passed me. I said hello, he replied 'no photos, please. It is a retail shop so no photos allowed." I replied, oh I must have missed the sign. There was no sign and this is not a museum. I attached the photos of the beautiful planters and garden bench I was interested in purchasing. I needed 5. I'll take my $2,000+ elsewhere. Don't worry, Eugene you will never see me in your shop again and I will make sure all of my garden friends and rose enthusiasts know what type of service you provide to locals. read more

Great experience here. Owner was incredibly helpful answering all my questions and making sure I got everything I needed for my first attempt at keeping a rose bush alive. He also doted on my dog, so bonus points. My only constructive comment would be that they didn't have many of the type of roses I was looking for. Apparently they specialize in a specific type. I wanted a floribunda or hybrid tea and there wasn't a huge selection. But the service was excellent!!! Let us all say a prayer for my rose bush (still alive... but being not-so-expertly nursed through white mold...) Dear (divine addressee of your choice), Please (prayer that floats your boat). This shop just makes my heart happy. The owner is also the operator and spends so much time and love on each item he puts in the store. He's extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer all of your questions about plants. His selection is unique, not just the run of the mill you get at Home-depot or Lowe's. My wife and I have been driving past this GEM of a nursery for a better part of the year. Finally, we took the plunge and stopped here a few weeks ago. Just WOW! Amazing selection of David Austin roses and a few other varieties. Outside of the store is very deceiving as to what awaits you inside. We have already made 7 trips to the store in the last few weeks. The owner Eugene has made our shopping experience very welcoming as well as the knowledge base he has for all his products was A1! Wow I wish I knew about this place sooner. They have nearly the entire David Austin rose catalogue and a bunch of other rare roses (mostly retired David Austin roses) that I had been looking for but cannot find anywhere! Compared to other nurseries their prices are amazing for 3-5 gal containers. They also have some other fantastic non-Austin roses like Colette. If you like roses this is the place to go in Northern California. Honestly their plants look so healthy and large. Absolutely wonderful service to boot. You can even order on their website and pick up within a couple of weeks. Phenomenal nursery. read more

We are so thrilled Eugene has been in the neighborhood for two years. His roses are the best and have done so well in our yard. His veggies starts have also done so well. Funny business title but packed in this small little shop that Eugene runs is indeed an amazing collection of roses, oddities & amazing things. We've found an excellent variety of David Austin English roses that are simply too difficult to find elsewhere. We've learned about tools (e.g. rose pruner from Burgon & Ball, dropped the winter pruning time down to one day) that have leveled up our rose and gardening game. In addition, plenty of soil, fertilizer, and garden accessories to choose from and our only regret is not discovering this place sooner. read more

I just stopped by for my first time and this is my new favorite plant spot!! There were so many beautiful flowers and succulents. I got a string of pearls plant and a string of bananas plant. I've wanted both of those plants for so long but the ones I see in stores never look healthy. The two I bought here look amazing. I'm so happy with my purchase! I will definitely be back! I love this nursery! A deceivingly small storefront, I stopped in for a small gift (and to support the local economy). I ventured outside and was taken aback at the large, unique inventory of pots and planters, soils, and gardening supplies. The garden and pond designs range from minimalist to modern to traditional. Most appear set up for easy installation. Oh - the pants, flowers and trees always look beautiful. Cottage Gardens may provide more volume, but here you will be inspired to create the perfect garden just for you. The prices are reasonable. The owner is very nice and helpful, and lets you wander to your heart's content (be prepared for at least two trips around, so as not to miss all the interesting garden art and sculptures tucked in between larger items). read more

This place is a gem tucked away in a residential area of Petaluma. During limited hours during the shelter in place order, the owner delivered soil if needed, or carried it to your car to avoid exposure to others. Plants came in slowly at first at every nursery, but then, right in the nick of time for me, healthy beautiful echinacea arrived! I am so happy hours will be expanding, can't wait to see what is new each week. The roses I have purchased here in the past few years are splendid. read more

Great place to shop for garden & plant enthusiasts everywhere! Picked up the most beautiful double impatience which are very hard to find. Love this shop! Eugene is great. He is very knowledgeable on all the plants he carries. He can even special order for you if needed. He has very nice fountains, that are reasonably priced. The best part about this nursery is that all his roses are very different and beautiful, compared to the big box stores. The big box stores carry maybe five different roses.
