Guilford Free Library - A stack Of books From the library I am currently reading

If I could give a 100 starts I would. I am a Manhattanite and a world traveler. But this library…read morebeats almost all others in its space and new, cutting edge, and classic book offerings. Every time I am in Guilford, I go to the library for new additions and staff picks. I am currently reading this stack (see the photo), but the David Bowie book is new and awesome (picked it up too, as soon as I saw it as it coicides with the fab Lighiting Bowie show in London's King's Cross). The reading areas are little gems, of various types: round tables, seats by the window and the antique-furnised original library room that opens up the magnificent view of the famous town Green, with light mesmerazing in the late afternoon. The study rooms are super conducive to work. I usually book the conference room-ave done my best brainstorming, zooms and writing there. The programming they offer is varied from talks, music events to daily clubs and group activities. These people are seriouous players. Incredible selection, choices, energy, consistency, perseverence. The kid area is also welcoming. The staff can be of varied moods, but I practice politeness and get good service. Just LOVE this place. Totally. Period.

I find the library staff very helpful. I think the collection is good but not great. Reasons: many…read moreof the books I request have to come from other libraries, too few copies of new or popular fiction and, many of the books have broken spines and food stains through out. I donate as often as I can and I wish the collection was larger, the ordering of new & popular books could be increased (wait list way too long) and, some books simply need to retire because of poor condition.

Old Lyme-Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library - A lovely place to read

Great library - really like how they provide print outs of crosswords from newspapers. Staff was…read morereally friendly and was giving away free books and flowers that had been donated. Had many computers available for public use and tables to sit at. Only complaint was there were not lots of outlets near the tables making it difficult for people going to study with laptops/personal computers. Nothing an extension cord can't fix. Overall a wonderful place.

In honor of…read morePhoebe The great era of library building in New England was in the late part of the 19th century. Very wealthy individuals would donate vast sums of money to build libraries in honor of deceased loved ones. The Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library is a classic example. Charles Ludington gave money to the town of Old Lyme to build a library to memorialize his mother in law, Phoebe Griffin Noyes. The library was opened in 1898 and was very pleasant and lovely but rather modest by the standards of some of the more grand and opulent libraries being built. It served well for decades and was renovated and expanded over the years. The largest building project was in 1955 and the size of the library was great expanded. The library today is a very pleasant place, especially the old, original section. Unfortunately the new addition is rather incongruent with the original part and it is obvious when you go from one part to the other. Even parts of the original wall is exposed as you go from one part to another. The inside of the library is very colorful with all kinds of cool displays and art and plenty of computers and modern conveniences. An interesting and comfy library that is a nice memorial to a person long gone but not forgotten.

Killingworth Library - Nice sunny spot

    Killingworth Library

The Killingworth Library is probably the smallest library I've been in but it is still a friendly,…read moreorganized, and comfortable atmosphere. I have a long and active reading list and am always on the lookout for large printed versions of the books on my list. Finding the large print sections of libraries has always been difficult for me, I absolutely never find the large print section on my own. The librarian at Killingworth library was very forgiving of my directional difficulties and helped me find the section. When I was ready to check my book out the librarian noticed the novel I had selected was on their current reading list and gave me a copy. That was really nice of her, I found some other books to add to my list and I will read them in the future as well. I will happily visit Killingworth Library again if they have any more books on my list.

Through these doors, lie…read moremany worlds The Killingworth Library is one of the newer ones in the area, only opening it's doors in 1995. It was quite a circuitous path to this present building and the first idea of a library in Killingworth started back in 1964. In that year about 1,000 books were donated by local individuals and nearby libraries and the first Killingworth Library was started. Of course the books didn't really have a home of their own and were just kind of shoved into a local elementary school. After a while the books were moved into a town office and then an empty fire house. It wasn't until 1995 that the town purchased an old bank, fixed it up and the very first permanent library was opened. The building is quite charming and quaint and none of the former bank can be seen. The library certainly isn't large but is extremely homey and comfy. Since it is new it has all the latest libraries amenities but still has a very local feel. Lots of events take place in the library and a cool display case shows art, crafts and other things of local interest. This is a very pleasant and useful library that looks and feels like it's been serving the town of Killingworth forever.
